What job or career would you aim for if you could do ANYTHING?

Posting as think it might be an interesting discussion, and keen to hear ideas I may not have though of.

I need something to aim for and throw myself into to distract away from health problems and infertility. (My health means plenty of jobs are unsuitable for me personally, but still would enjoy reading about other people's ambitions and adventures)

What would you do if you were free to do anything?

Tv home makeover show host. Not Hot enough unfortunately and probably too uppity for showbiz.

If I had known about forensic entomology as a girl (70s) I would have worked really hard to gain scientific qualifications. Absolutely fascinates me.

Gladioli23 · 16/02/2022 22:31

In a world where money was no object I'd go and work in tech, preferably in live television or theatre as I love the buzz of live technical stuff.

In a world where money was no object and I could somehow maintain a work life balance where I didn't take work home with me/have to work 70 hours a week to do my job, I would go and work in policy somewhere in government where I could use my strategic planning skills to look at the available leavers and the overarching goals and use that to make sensible strategic decisions. Preferably in healthcare or social care I think.

Fantasy world- forensic pathologist or maybe a Army nurse

Reality- hoping to start a college course so I can start university next year to train as a neonatal or paediatric nurse

A singer.. sadly my voice doesn’t agree Grin

leotardrock · 16/02/2022 22:38

I'm a boring old Civil Servant & too close to retirement to do anything else but the success of the vaccines recently has so made me wish I was a scientist!
So if I was young that is what I would do!

blueshoes · 16/02/2022 22:45

@PennyDiamond

Architect Anaesthetist Something in Palliative care (could be achievable in this lifetime!)
If I was a doctor, I would be an anaesthetist or in palliative care as well. I would like to relieve pain.
SisyphusDad · 16/02/2022 22:47

@BleaketyBleak

OK. That's another quality I lack. I'm totally ruthful Grin

Me too! I wish I could sing. I’d be happy to be a backing singer, I wouldn't need to be the star of the show.

Another fantasy career would be a lead in a popular tv show (think Starsky & Hutch or similar) just the thought of being paid loads to basically play cops and robbers all day has always sounded like a good gig to me.

I had to google forensic entomology. Is this where you have body farms where corpses are left out in the open to decompose and you observe the life cycle of insects that feast on the body to determine the time of death.

An outdoor instructor or a tattoo artist! Great question and so cool reading everyone's replies Star

That’s part of it, yes. It’s much broader though. Saw a completely fascinating documentary several years ago and it really sparked my interest.
Have always been fascinated by insects and by pathology and the combination of the two would, to me, have been the perfect career, had I known there was such a thing!

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/02/2022 22:58

There was also a brilliant episode of The Life Scientific with a fantastic woman working in the field who just brought her field to life. It was nothing short of captivating.

LadyAnglerfish · 16/02/2022 22:59

Nun/surgeon.

Like Sister Wendy, only with a medical degree and working in foreign parts or Margot Maynard from the Chalet School books.

Jinglebellsoncake · 16/02/2022 23:00

I have realised I am doing my dream job already 😃

I can't think of anything else I would rather be doing. (Although I do wish it was a little bit less stressful)

MonkeyPuddle · 16/02/2022 23:00

I am a community nurse, I work out of hours so I do a lot of palliative care. I love nursing, being part of a team, providing care in such an important time of someone’s life.
It’s an absolute honour.

I would like it if we could move towards assisted deaths. Because I have cared for so, so many patients who want that. I have read around the subject, I can’t say for sure what I believe in, but I just wish I could help the who were sure of their beliefs.

On the more "serious jobs" side of things a solicitor

I wish I could do all these jobs - I like the idea of having different careers at different stages of my life but unfortunately wouldn't be able to afford all the retraining!

Mam576 · 16/02/2022 23:05

See lots of propels interested in Forensics. Im doing a PhD in Forensic Psychology it is fascinating but stressful. I would love to be a travel blogger

SushiGo · 16/02/2022 23:07

Script writer for TV - comedy & drama

In the back of my head I still think maybe someday.

amusedbush · 16/02/2022 23:09

@notheretoplay

Nothing. I wouldn’t work if I didn’t have too. My dream job would be having money but not working😂
Absolutely this. I completely resent that my parents decided to have a child 32 years ago and now I have to go to work every day Grin

Honestly, I want a job with absolutely no responsibility or moving parts or deadlines to remember. I want to just go to work, do the thing, then go home. DH is a postie so that is pretty much his day and he absolutely bloody loves it.

DuchessAndThePea · 16/02/2022 23:11

Great question.

I'd be a professor in psychology or I'd work in commercial property. I've had exposure to both and loved them. Wish I'd either stuck with the psyc or had earlier exposure to the world of property. I do love my job though and I'm bloody good at it. It's also better paid than the psyc professor role. So that's a comfort.

I can see the attraction. I wonder how many jobs there are in the world for this though. Then again, it is fun to fantasise about our dream career.

I'll swap you - I'm doing a PhD in Adult Education. I'm halfway through my second year and I'm ready to just give up my entire life to go and live in a hedge somewhere.
blueshoes · 16/02/2022 23:15

Why is Forensic Psychology or Adult Education stressful?
