When i purchased my home it had a pylon, not in the garden but close enough to hear the crackle. After a few years it and many more were removed. My house almost doubled in value overnight

EmmaGrundyForPM · 15/02/2022 07:53

Does anyone remember a 1970s TV. series called The Changes" where people went mad if they were exposed to electricity? I was petrified of being anywhere near pylons and overhead cables for years afterwards.

No way could I live in this house

Clementine87 · 15/02/2022 07:59

I've been a lurker for years but had to join when I saw this! My husband works for National Grid. I have just sent him the house link and he said he knows that house and tower! Usually people get paid to have them on their land, but they have to let National Grid access it whenever they need to for maintenance/ repairs etc.

@FawnFrenchieMum

I didn’t even see it when I first looked Blush I was busy looking in the back garden for something random! Noticed the awful car porch though. Read the comments, went back and wondered how on earth id missed it!
Me neither! Completely missed it somehow!!
Clementine87 · 15/02/2022 08:22

He failed to add that it isn't an NG tower, but theirs are in a field behind! He just "knows" that one too Grin

He loves his job.

mindutopia · 15/02/2022 09:52

We once viewed a house that both had a body in the garden (it wasn't one of the previous owners, but like a quite distant relative of theirs with no direct connection to the property), but also had a man living in the garden shed. He was someone they took in like 20 years ago and had just ended up staying on in the shed all this time. The EA made it clear that he wouldn't be asked to leave by the vendors and he basically 'came with the house'. Hmm This wasn't a dodgy house either, it was a fairly grand country home on several acres. We obviously didn't make an offer, but it sold within about a week. I often think of him and wonder if he's still there!

BamberGascoine · 15/02/2022 10:39

@BlaBlaSmthSmth there were a few public service adverts about dangerous situations. This was one, I remember one about prank calling 999 and an old man not getting the fore brigade because they were out on another call. Think there was one about swimming in quarries as well.

Like this!
Love the fence to hide it 😂
myheartskipsskipsabeat · 24/02/2022 22:48

The house is now sold subject to contract Shock

Moonopoly · 24/02/2022 23:08

It’s sold subject to contract - wow!

Ithinkimalonenow24 · 24/02/2022 23:50

Omg which mumsnetter brought it Smile

Also who would be brave enough to mow the lawn under the pylon?

GreenLunchBox · 14/04/2022 18:26

How did this sell so quickly? Shock

Crunchycrouton · 14/04/2022 19:33

How in gods name has that sold?

We visited a property a few years back (a converted church). There was a phone mast in the tower and anyone who owned the house had to allow 24 hour access.

And there was a graveyard for a garden.

No, thank you!

Gingernaut · 14/04/2022 19:37

Think of the wayleave

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 14/04/2022 19:47

£350k for a pylon??? and a free 2 bed bungalow???

I can't believe anyone has paid actual money for that. 🤯

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 14/04/2022 19:51

@Ithinkimalonenow24

Omg which mumsnetter brought it Smile

Also who would be brave enough to mow the lawn under the pylon?

You'd have to use a robo-mower, you wouldn't want to have sparks coming out of your arse whilst in control of a qualcast.
ineedsun · 14/04/2022 20:05

Ones just sold here with a pylon in the garden for 400k!

I know that it was last sold in 2007 for 200k.

Are people really that desperate to buy?

Tigertigertigertiger · 14/04/2022 20:10

Incredible poem by Michael Baldwin about what happens when you climb a pylon.

Death on a Live Wire:

Treading a field I saw afar

A laughing fellow climbing the cage

That held the grinning tensions of wire,

Alone, and no girl gave him courage.

Up he climbed on the diamond struts,

Diamond cut diamond, till he stood

With the insulators brooding like owls

And all their live wisdom, if he would.

I called to him climbing and asked him to say

What thrust him into the singeing sky:

The one word he told me the wind took away,

So I shouted again, but the wind passed me by

And the gust of his answer tore at his coat

And stuck him stark on the lightning’s bough;

Humanity screeched in his manacled throat

And he cracked with flame like a figure of straw.

Turning, burning, he dangled black,

A hot sun swallowing at his fork

And shaking embers out of his back,

Planting his shadow of fear in the chalk.

O then he danced an incredible dance

With soot in his sockets, hanging at heels;

Uprooted mandrakes screamed in his loins,

His legs thrashed and lashed like electric eels;

For now he embraced the talent of iron,

The white-hot ore that comes from the hill,

The Word out of which the electrons run,

The snake in the rod and the miracle;

And as he embraced it the girders turned black,

Fused metal wept and great tears ran down

Till his fingers like snails at last came unstuck

And he fell through the cage of the sun.
