Danielle / Daniella for a girl?

(Not for me, sat with pregnant friends chatting about names)

OP posts:

Love it!

GreenClock · 09/02/2022 22:13

I think it’s pretty and due a revival. She won’t be one of six in her school year (not that there is anything particularly wrong with that). Dani is s cute nickname. The French relatives won’t struggle with it. All good!

SeedsSeedsSeeds · 09/02/2022 22:16

I like it a lot. Can shorten to Danni when young and be longer when older if desired. It was on my girl name list, but I had boys.

@lottiegarbanzo

Very, very '80s (so born in the 70s). Along with her friends Donna, Denise, Sharon and Michelle.

Dani is cute but Danielle (Dan-Yell) is not elegant.

Daniel is a near timeless classic and is generally pronounced better (Dan-yull, with the emphasis is on the first syl).

Donna and Michelle are definite contemporaries of Danielle and probably now in their mid 40s, alongside Vicky, Nicola, Jane, Claire, Joanna, Gemma and Katy/Katherine.

I agree with the PP though, all the Denises I know are much older and Sharon (and Tracey!) are all in their 50s!

DoodleBelle · 09/02/2022 22:23

Very dated

Myhairbobblesnapped · 09/02/2022 22:28

Love it!!

I don't like it, I think it's a pretty blah name and I wouldn't use it myself. But it wouldn't stand out to me as a bad name, like if my daughter had a friend at school called Danielle it's not like I'd recoil at the name or even think twice about it to be honest. Whereas there are some names that do jump out to me as awful when I hear them!

OutdoorType · 09/02/2022 22:47

I agree it sounds quite dated but if there's a French link they may get away with it a bit more. What about Gabrielle/Gabriella or Giselle/Gisella or Eloise?

Danikm151 · 09/02/2022 22:49

I hate Danielle as nobody pronounces it right 🤣 but looks good on my cv
Everyone calls me Dani- even at work!

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/02/2022 22:50

Danielle sounds like Dan-Yell in most uk accents, it also conjures up early 80s barmaids of a certain age. It’s too early for a revival. Daniela (Dan-yell-ah) is a bit better but not much.

Chichimcgee · 09/02/2022 22:51

What’s wrong with Dannie Surname?

Danielle (in my accent Dan-Yell) is quite dated in that most are 30s now I think, I do know a young teenage Danielle though and it’s not offensive, just a bit meh.

Marcipex · 09/02/2022 22:53

Daniel for a boy is nice.

Danielle, Daniella, no. Dated and clunky. One I know calls herself Ellie, which is prettier than Dan-yella.

Classica · 09/02/2022 22:57

It's nice enough just out of fashion. Isabelle took its place.

Boosterquery · 09/02/2022 23:15

I like Danielle! (Not so keen on Daniella.)

DramaAlpaca · 09/02/2022 23:17

I love Daniel, but I'm not keen on Danielle.

Daniela/Daniella is nicer.

WanJames · 09/02/2022 23:19

I don’t like it, but that’s just my personal opinion…
I like Jamie and Rae for a girl.

AbsentmindedWoman · 09/02/2022 23:21

Can somebody phonetically write the French pronunciation, I'm a bit dim Grin

FridayiminlovewithRobertSmith · 09/02/2022 23:26

I’m quite neutral on I’m quite surprised on the point about being dated and rough. One of my grads this year is called Daniella and is an extremely posh 23 year old. But her mother is half Swiss so maybe nit the same connotations when she was born.

MerryMarigold · 09/02/2022 23:31

Dan-YEW where I live (you'll be lucky to hear the 'L'). I think it's a particularly Essexy name.

Firebird83 · 09/02/2022 23:39

Daniella is ok. Danielle is dated.

YourWinter · 09/02/2022 23:50

I liked both the Danielle's I've known, but I don't think it works for a baby now.

There were five Daniels in my son's primary school class of 24 (he wasn't one of them), and it's still as popular. There were five girls with my name when I was at primary school in the early 1960s, but nobody uses the name now.

Sheilaroundthefountain · 09/02/2022 23:51

Yes it definitely sounds like it ends in a W where I live too.
Meh2020 · 10/02/2022 00:57

I love Danielle - it’s a very pretty name. Not sure it’s dated in the same way as other names. I only know one who is 40.

Kanaloa · 10/02/2022 01:00

I think it’s pretty and a solid name. I’m a fan of names like Danielle, Hannah, Nicole etc. Just plain good names that aren’t desperately trying to be ‘unique’ or different. I think they could suit anybody at any age.

ghostmouse · 10/02/2022 07:47

I love it. It’s my daughters middle name. I know one or two little girls with the names Danielle and they do suit. It’s not the worst name in the world
