How do you make extra money?

With the cost of living etc going up and the terrible news about energy coming in 35 mins...I thought a thread to share insight would be good.

I know these have been done to death but I always find that they are 'sign up to 20cogs' or 'survey website blah' and I think they are the worst use of your time with such poor returns.

Here are some of the things I do and I'd love to know more:

 • enter competitions: there is a comping community out there and it is so nice and easy with Google Chrome to get into it. I started in COVID and I have won something every month. I only enter comps with prizes I'd want and have won tens of thousands, including cash. I recommend setting up a separate gmail account for entries as there's a lot of trash to sift through.
 • Honey chrome extension - we give our data away every bloody day so may as well get money for it. I got it originally for coupons. It has found me so many coupons that work, I always get £20 off my Waitrose shop with a mysterious coupon and never had issues. When you spend it collects 'honey gold' which is exchangeable for vouchers. I have a good £50 in vouchers I've accumulated somehow and never even realised. I've redeemed a few Amazon vouchers and used them successfully.
 • The old Vinted and eBay. I find Vinted to be good for clothes selling and a couple of quid with no fees has been useful. I will list things for 2 weeks and if no offers/purchase I take to charity.
 • I bought a cricut for my wedding and made vinyl and learned calligraphy. I'm pretty good at it so sell things online. I do it through Bride groups and for friends. I don't go out of my way to buy things for it, I am just trying to earn the cost of the machine back and it's a fun little hobby.

Does any one have anything? If you have a side business or something, i'd love to know what it actually is too!

Matched betting here too, been doing it over 3 years.

GTAlogic · 03/02/2022 16:20

I occasionally sell my photographs and sometimes repair damaged photos for a small fee.

Tufty383 · 03/02/2022 16:39

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz i don't think buyers particularly care which delivery service you use. It's definitely a buyers market so don't price too high and I'd say be prepared to accept offers. When I'm selling I'm happy to just get rid of stuff really and it all adds up. It's really easy to use.

BonnesVacances · 03/02/2022 16:48

Market research pays well. I've signed up with this company and have been selected a few times. I'm doing an hour's focus group tomorrow evening for £40. takepartinresearch.co.uk

Dreamstate · 03/02/2022 17:41

Trading shares and crypto, currently made £15k since beginning on the year

PivotPivotPivottt · 03/02/2022 18:09

Opinium surveys. I've not done any for a while as I can never be bothered but have made a fair bit doing these.

Takeaway deliveries. I've made over £70 this week doing 2 shifts. That's at a place that isn't busy but I know people who can make around £100 a night doing it for popular busy take aways.

stripylioness · 03/02/2022 18:19

@Dreamstate what do you use to trade on? Do you have to have an income to trade? Thanks

Pumpkinstace · 03/02/2022 18:20

I've done matched betting but don't any more.

Deliveroo in my spare time

TravellingSpoon · 03/02/2022 18:55

I use Topcashback for all my purchases. Got £25 for switching my pet insurance and £245 for switching my utilities in the summer (although I dont think they are offering such big incentives now)

TravellingSpoon · 03/02/2022 18:55

I also save up Nectar points and use that for my Christmas shop.

Bohomie · 03/02/2022 19:06

I've signed up to a job agency and start weekend shifts next week 6am-6pm, £12.10 p/h.
That extra money will pay off some debts, saved towards next Xmas and pay for some nice treats

ilovebagpuss · 03/02/2022 19:07

I buy and sell antique jewellery on EBay but have years of experience for this.
Personally I would just get a second job even if it was one shift a week at the local pub or cleaning at local care home a shift or two. This would soon be £50 quid a week

Dreamstate · 03/02/2022 19:45
@Dreamstate what do you use to trade on? Do you have to have an income to trade? Thanks
For shares i use IG and its in an isa so no tax to pay. If you trade enough fees are low enough that i can basically sell at £50 profit if I want to.

For crypto I mostly use coinbase for transferring fiat in and out. But im in passive income projects on the avalanche and ethereum blockchains. These are classed as income tax so I take a fair hit as its 40% for me.

pisspants · 03/02/2022 19:56

I've made £7,500 over 2 years doing low risk casino using Team Casino (waves to the others on the thread on there too!) . It is a really straightforward guide and you can keep track of everything easily on there.
Theres a great ongoing thread in the money section here called £10 a day, with lots of chat about side hustles. through there I learnt about Appen which has lots ongoing projects, mostly involving social media. I did a year long project through that which was about 45mins a day and earned about £1.5k from that as well but that thread has lots of good ideas and advice

helpingbereavedperson · 03/02/2022 21:32

Has anyone mentioned switching bank accounts yet? I've made nearly £400 plus a £150 virgin experience voucher over the past six months or so.

crazydineraddict · 04/02/2022 09:29

@Pumpkinstace

I've done matched betting but don't any more.

It really depends on when you can do it.

Obviously a Friday and Saturday night is more lucrative than a Tuesday lunchtime. I live in a city which has a large student population, which also helps.

ShanJG · 07/02/2022 15:46

Hey guys so I’ve been able to make some extra money a few ways

-Top cash back (I’ve probably made about £600 from this over the last two years) so not loads but still extra pennies.

-working part time doing audio transcription. A lot of work and not so great money one times but definitely helps.

-I recently joined a thing turn £75 into £600. It’s really easy to do however it does take a while dependant on how quick you are at getting people to join but it’s so much fun and I already made £600 in a week with it. I’m now on to my second £600 but will potentially take me another week or two.

Any info just ask! X

I've been using an app called Freetrade lately which is a trading app but they have a great free share referral scheme. When you sign up for the app via a referral link, you are credited when a free share worth between £3-£200. Then each time you refer a friend (up to 10 referrals per month), you both get a free share. I've made about £50 just from 4 or 5 referrals. You do need to deposit £1 into the app to claim the free share but you can then withdraw it again once the free share has come through. My referral link is below!

I make and sell hand made products to a niche market-100% of my sales are via fb, and it makes me £25 - £75 a week on average.

andysgirl22 · 28/02/2022 16:04

@ShanJG would you be comfortable explaining the turning 75 inton600 thing please ? Pm me if that's easier

And also how dp you go about picking up the audio transcription work please ? Are there specific websites or agencies to join to get it please ?

Thanks so much x

I steward at sports matches and concerts. If you are in a large town or city its worth checking to see if there are vacancies. 2 days a month brings me 120 extra and its not like a regular second job that I'd have to commit to ending up with no downtime.
