How do you make extra money?

crazydineraddict · 03/02/2022 10:24

With the cost of living etc going up and the terrible news about energy coming in 35 mins...I thought a thread to share insight would be good.

I know these have been done to death but I always find that they are 'sign up to 20cogs' or 'survey website blah' and I think they are the worst use of your time with such poor returns.

Here are some of the things I do and I'd love to know more:

 • enter competitions: there is a comping community out there and it is so nice and easy with Google Chrome to get into it. I started in COVID and I have won something every month. I only enter comps with prizes I'd want and have won tens of thousands, including cash. I recommend setting up a separate gmail account for entries as there's a lot of trash to sift through.
 • Honey chrome extension - we give our data away every bloody day so may as well get money for it. I got it originally for coupons. It has found me so many coupons that work, I always get £20 off my Waitrose shop with a mysterious coupon and never had issues. When you spend it collects 'honey gold' which is exchangeable for vouchers. I have a good £50 in vouchers I've accumulated somehow and never even realised. I've redeemed a few Amazon vouchers and used them successfully.
 • The old Vinted and eBay. I find Vinted to be good for clothes selling and a couple of quid with no fees has been useful. I will list things for 2 weeks and if no offers/purchase I take to charity.
 • I bought a cricut for my wedding and made vinyl and learned calligraphy. I'm pretty good at it so sell things online. I do it through Bride groups and for friends. I don't go out of my way to buy things for it, I am just trying to earn the cost of the machine back and it's a fun little hobby.

Does any one have anything? If you have a side business or something, i'd love to know what it actually is too!

Some good tips!

Lovemusic33 · 03/02/2022 11:36

I sell on vinted and do online surveys (which is a bit tedious and repetitive). Match betting is good if you have the time to do it, I think there’s a whole thread on it in the money section?

TyrannosaurusRegina · 03/02/2022 11:41

How do you get started with matched betting? Is there a specific site to use? And what is it exactly?

FabriqueBelgique · 03/02/2022 11:43

I often think all the time and effort going into these things like coupon collecting, surveys and entering competitions could be put to better use starting a small business. Or even getting a qualification.

jimmyreckon · 03/02/2022 12:01

I use Profit Accumulator @TyrannosaurusRegina it's definitely slowed down over the past couple of years but I've made a fair amount from it- they have step by step instructions to help you get started

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 03/02/2022 12:04

@ballerinaqueen

Roughly how long does it take you to do a study?
Anything from 2 mins to 1 hour ... it tells you time and payment up front and also what hourly rate is.

I've had to query a few when I've had tech issues - literally only happened a handful of times - and been cut out and more often than not the study owner has honoured it.

PorpoiseWithPurpose · 03/02/2022 12:04

There is an entire Mumsnet thread dedicated to earning £10 a day and all the links on how to do it:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/legal_money_matters/4469273-Earn-10-a-day-Forward-we-go-into-February

PorpoiseWithPurpose · 03/02/2022 12:07

PS- the thread above has been running for years and is updated each month. Lots of wise people on it with great ideas.

areyoubeingserved1985 · 03/02/2022 12:07

Not popular on Mumsnet but I am partylite consulant for about 3 years. Made enough to pay for Christmas and days out for my son.

Errr not really comparable and massively discounting effort of business owners/studying Grin

I spend 20 mins tops a day doing this ... please do suggest a business idea though! None of those pre packaged shit soaps it sweets in cellophane people flog on FB, thanks.

Silverswirl · 03/02/2022 12:16
@StrawberrySanta yes there's various websites such as Prizefinder, Loquax and Competition Database. There's lots of competition groups o Facebook too full of other compers.
You do have to do a lot though, I average around 100 a day but be patient and the wins will come. Happy to answer any more questions you have
I’ve joined a few of the fb groups but they all seem to be sharing comps which are pay £1.50 to enter or something or you have to tag friends into stuff??

Trinacham · 03/02/2022 12:28

@ballerinaqueen

3 days into February and I've already earned £5! Did 2 studies paying £2.50👍
Those two particular £2.50 studies I did it estimated 20-24 mins, but I don't think it took me that long to do either. As someone has already said though, you are told how much each study is prior to agreeing to do it and how long it could take, so you know whether it is worth your time or not. Some are worth a lot for a tiny amount of time, and others are not worth the effort - it is your decision before you start.
hellcatspangle · 03/02/2022 13:01

Do you have any local market researchers who do product placements? They get you to test products and you get paid cash or vouchers, it's at least a fiver each time. Someone I know got paid £50 last week for doing an hour zoom thing!

EmmaC78 · 03/02/2022 13:06

I do matched betting and casino too. I make around £500 a month. There are a few months I have been luck and made nearly £1500

How do you do this? I've wanted to give it a go but no idea where to start
Peanut82 · 03/02/2022 13:10

@Silverswirl I never enter a comp they costs money to enter.

www.competitiondatabase.co.uk/

www.loquax.co.uk/competitions/
These are the sites I use

Trinacham · 03/02/2022 13:26

@Peanut82 I used this website to learn how to do matched betting www.teamprofit.com/matched-betting-for-dummies it's really good! I only did a bit of MB in 2020 but didn't continue with it

EmmaC78 · 03/02/2022 13:27

@Peanut82 I used the team profit website for matched betting and team casino website for the casino offers. There is a subscription fee for team casino but they do a free trial which lets you see if you like doing it. The subscription fee is low though, I think it is about £10 a month and I more than make that back. I think it would be difficult to do it without the subscription.

Team profit have a FB page you can join. It used to be better tbh as they used to do a list of offers each day for free but I don't think they do that nymore so I tend to stick to casino.

@tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz Print on demand designs, digital products, special interest blogs..

Even 1 hour cleaning would get you at least a tenner.

Tufty383 · 03/02/2022 14:59

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz you don't need a printer for vinted. They now use Yodel which allows you to print the labels at the drop off point.

Not when I'm doing surveys in bed with a cuppa Grin

Seriously though, there is so much more to running a successful business than that. I'll leave it to others to crack on with.

Tufty383 · 03/02/2022 15:33

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz yeh its much easier, ours is in our local petrol station so no need to park up in town anymore. Vinted send you a QR code and then it's scanned and printed in store. My other top tip is to parcel stuff up in carrier bags turned inside out. Happy selling!

Thanks so much Tufty! I've never even sold on EBay so this will be a whole new world for me Grin but I've got so much stuff that I may as well try and get a few quid for.

Do you find buyers are happy to accept that? I'm worried that by limiting myself to postage methods it may go against me.

Any other tips you have I will gratefully receive! The inside out bag one I'm already doing when returning parcels too but it's a good one.

booklover164 · 03/02/2022 15:49

Matched betting and team casino here too! Hello fellow TCers! I've made about £15k since last May. Like PP, would highly recommend the profit accumulator Facebook page in addition to the Team Casino page.
