I just watched this extremely distressing video of a fully grown man squeezing his fully grown self into a letter box sized hole. He probably doesn't even know where that hole leads. Pennywise might be down there waiting for him. He might never comes back.

'Ah' his friends will say 'but he died doing what he loved most, squeezing himself into creepy little caves'.

I'd rather walk across broken glass to embrace a naked Nigel Farage than go potholing.

If you can watch that and think 'looks okay to me' well then you're one step away from being a potholer.

I’ve been pot holing. Once. It was the single most terrifying thing I’ve ever done. I was a very skinny twenty something and the man in front of me was very big. I figured if he could get through I could get through .

I saw something on the news last night where a guy had to be rescued after getting stuck and saw a film about a pothole in America that got stuck and couldn’t be rescued and they had to leave him to his fate. I honestly can’t see why anyone would want to do it, but then I don’t even like going in lifts so probably not the hobby for me

My dad was a cave expedition leader when I was a kid. He used to take me and my sister, I was absolutely terrified but I was too scared to say so, so I had to just go along. There are actually some caves that you have to go completely under water to get through (like a tunnel, but filled with water) it's absolutely crazy. I definitely don't have the nerve or the inclination to try it as a grown up. I suppose if you like adrenaline rush it's one of the best things you can do, but you have to be so alert and check the weather forecast constantly, as caves can flood at fast.

I have and it's not for my claustrophobic arse. Just terrible.

However, I've done black water rafting in NZ and it was brilliant. Well-explored caves with a very good guide.

I did that as well - I looked at the arse in front of me thinking if that fits I will as well! still terrifying though!

This reminds me of the sandwich board reminding passersby that fat people are heavier and therefore more difficult to kidnap. The same advice applies here: stay safe, eat cake.

I’m with you OP. Made me feel slightly sick just watching! I’m a relatively adventurous person but just don’t see how that’s fun?

I thought this thread was going to be if you do potholing for fun...have you never seen The Descent?? Never!

Very sorry for the man who died, and for his family. We are not all the same and it's great that some members of society are fit and brave enough to climb mountains, sky dive etc,and all physical activities (within reason!) should be encouraged, but given the current resources of the NHS, I do think anyone who knowingly undertakes such a risky activity (I'm talking extreme sports here not run of the mill sports) should be required to sign some form of obligatory health insurance in the event of needing to be rescued or treated. I say this as a horse rider who has needed help from paramedics for concussion. It would be difficult to draw the line as to which sports would qualify but I suspect a quick look at A & E records would help. I think it's a bit much to knowingly take part in such a risky activity without being prepared to pay for at least a percentage of your treatment or rescue when NHS resources are as stretched as they are.

squeezing through a teeny cave whilst underwater sounds 100% worse.

I can see the buzz you'd get jumping out of a plane but this just sounds like hell.

I read about the nutty putty guy. I had nightmares about it for weeks. Even thinking about it now distresses me. Do not read it if you are claustrophobic or easily upset, it’s awful! 😔

Even less appealing, there's cave diving. Someone actually found a way to make potholing worse.

My arse would be creating the hole .

You would not get me to go potholing in a million years. I think literally the only thing that would get me down somewhere like that would be to rescue my DC.
