People who do potholing for fun

I just watched this extremely distressing video of a fully grown man squeezing his fully grown self into a letter box sized hole. He probably doesn't even know where that hole leads. Pennywise might be down there waiting for him. He might never comes back.

'Ah' his friends will say 'but he died doing what he loved most, squeezing himself into creepy little caves'.

I'd rather walk across broken glass to embrace a naked Nigel Farage than go potholing.

I went potholing when I was 17 with older friends who were in a club. I was young and very athletic having been a gymnast. Actually I found it really good, I enjoyed the physical challenge, my old issue was I was cold as I didn't have a wetsuit and we basically climbed down a waterfall and then back up again.

@Threewheeler1 ‘Shit, bugger that! I get panicky putting my slightly too tight jumper on’

That made me laugh so much, thank you!

When the DDs were kids, I let them do any activity they wanted - climbing, bikes, camping, horseriding, kayaking, let their dad teach them to drive across fields (private, with permission), abseiling, gliding, anything at all - except for potholing/cave diving. If they wanted to do that, they would have to wait until they moved out at 18. I'd have signed permission slips for them to feed lions, rehabilitate potentially rabid vampire bats, train velociraptors or join the navy/MI6/work in environmental political campaigning in dodgy countries, but there was never going to be a time when I had both breath in my body and the power to make such decisions that they would be allowed anywhere near squeezes.

Never.

Just no. Never.

Amazingly enough, the ex was quite happy for me to have that line in the sand. He thought I was an utter prick on the whole, but my point blank refusal was absolutely fine with him.

I did this in uni, because it sounded cool. Hated it, proper proper hated it. Losing sight of the sun was surprisingly hard to do.

I already knew I hated it on Cave 1, but (being horribly rational) decided I needed to confirm it by also going down Cave 2. Yep, confirmed. Pretty sure I had a dissociative experience because I was going lalala this isn't real the walls are made of putty and I can escape if I need to and it's fine and LALALA. Everyone else was cheery and I just utterly hated it. Cave 3 the next day was the cherry on top (peer pressure innit).

Never again!!
@xenobitch, I hope you did escape and haven't typed that message from the afterlife!
No, I am a skeleton stuck deep in the underground caves of the Mendips. I get in the way of the living now. So inconvenient for them Grin

CovidCorvid · 03/02/2022 21:55

I also did it at uni and quite enjoyed it. Preferred caving on one level though. Setting up abseils and climbing caving ladders spinning around made me nervous. Couldn’t do it now, I was braver then.

A friend’s brother died caving. Drowned as the water levels rose I believe.

OMFG I would genuinely rather shag Boris Johnson than squeeze myself down that hole! Thankfully my arse is far too big anyway but 😱 I can't think of anything worse

Calm down now, it's not that bad

I dunno. I have gone pot holing, and with that experience would actually shag BoJo. At least I could try and pretend he was someone else.

Thanks to this thread I have now watched 'The Last Descent' and have spent a few hours on YouTube watching spelunking videos.

I would rather chew my own arm off than go caving/potholing. Why, just WHY would anyone think that crawling through a tiny space deep underground would be a good idea??

Have you seen the film 'The Descent?' Is a lovely watch if you like this thread.

No, Dave, no! Don't listen to her; it's a trap!

Annabelle69 · 03/02/2022 22:58

I've been into some extreme sports in my time, but potholing can do one! I hate it so much that a year ago I decided to try and sensentize myself to it, by watching YouTube vids like this. Like a form of self torture, but it worked. m.youtube.com/watch?v=qdwOsSPv

I got nightmares just reading the plot summary on Wikipedia a few years ago.
MarshaBradyo · 03/02/2022 23:03

Who’s watched The Rescue?

Am amazed. Incredible, how brave they all were

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 04/02/2022 05:54

I watched a very similar video not long ago and almost had a panic attack.

I’m not scared of many things, but getting stuck in tight places is one of them.
