What’s fashionable for a diamond ring these days?

I’ve been given a bit of money to treat myself and I’ve always wanted a diamond ring. I’ve always liked the ones with 3 diamonds in a row but my adult daughter thinks they’re unfashionable.

So what is fashionable?

This will be worn on my wedding ring finger instead of the engagement ring I was given 35 years ago. (Which I still love and will still wear at times).

Get what you like and you’ll most probably still like it in a decade. Get what’s fashionable and you won’t like it now or in a decade.

Holly60 · 29/01/2022 08:19

Don’t get fashionable - it will date! Get something you love. Then you will always love it and nothing else matters.

I would definitely look at second hand, better value and more interesting pieces.

Also more carbon friendly as diamond

Not wanting to get all fun police but the production is terrible in the amount of carbon it releases.
This guy has an interesting project on the go. But not sure how the diamonds stack as an investment

Try on lots in your price range, at least one of them will speak to you . They generally yell out loudly to me 🙄

I would avoid second hand like the plague, rings wear out over time, and you are more likely to get something that breaks.

Diamonds are very heavily recycled as they are a valuable commodity.

If you want an investment make sure its GIA certified only....

gluenotsoup · 29/01/2022 08:48

Can a beautiful diamond ring ever be unfashionable? Get what you like, I agree the right one will just speak to you 😂

buckingmad · 29/01/2022 08:51

Go classic and simple. Also get what you like. I personally think halo is very tacky but sure some people love it. I have a really classic and elegant solitaire but some will think it’s just boring!

JuneOsborne · 29/01/2022 09:01

I'd get the biggest solitaire you can. Try a trio to the jewellery quarter in Birmingham. Loads of places for lunch and cocktails or wine while you're at.

EvilPea · 29/01/2022 09:13

rings wear out over time
But diamonds don’t.

DueyCheatemAndHow · 29/01/2022 09:19

Get what you want! Whats the point in having money yo spend on something like that if you don't get something that makes you happy everytime you wear it??

God I'm jealous

DarleneSnell · 29/01/2022 09:34

Cluster makes a beautiful second ring, I think. Doesn't look engagement-y and works for any occasion!

I agree you get more for your spend with second-hand, and you could have it reset into a more modern setting if needed.

LadyEloise1 · 29/01/2022 09:37

Unlike buckingmad I love a halo ring and amn't fond of solitaires unless they're 2.5 carats plus ( way beyond my budget Smile ) and not on a "high" setting.
I guess it's what suits your hand.
I have wide fingers and a solitaire ( even 1.5 carat ) looks small on me. A halo ring gives me the "size" that looks right for my finger.

PermanentTemporary · 29/01/2022 09:37

I had 3 diamonds in a row in a rubover setting 19 years ago and of course still love it, but I'm sure it's of it's time. Right now some kind of circular setting with diamonds in the band too appears to be fashionable judging by the 'show me your ring ' threads (why not look at those).

I think it depends a lot on your hand shape. Try lots on.

TheWelshposter · 29/01/2022 15:12

I think three stone rings are very simple, elegant and classic. Go for it if that's what you love.

Backtobacktheyfacedeachother · 29/01/2022 15:24

I would get an Art Deco diamond ring.
I’ve been coveting something like this for around 20 years

I love the classic styles, especially Art Deco and Victorian style rings

One thing is that I think you need to go for the biggest diamond of best quality you can afford, I personally hate those rings with the teeny tiny diamond set very deep in quite a thick band - they look very dated in not a good way

I’d get what you want-don’t base it on what your daughter thinks!

AnApparitionQuipped · 30/10/2022 17:29

Things go in and out of fashion - if you want three in a row, get three in a row - it will come back into fashion sooner or later.

I do like those Art Deco ones posted above, I have to say! If I could find one in my budget (i.e. cubic zirconia!) I would be tempted.

YaWeeFurryBastard · 30/10/2022 17:38

3 stones are lovely and very classic, they’re definitely not something that are unfashionable just not “in fashion” at the moment so unlikely to date. I would class out of fashion as halo set and the current fashion seems to be oval/rectangle or hidden halo which will likely look dated in a few years.

If you’re going to get something special I would personally steer away from cluster or pave as it takes away from a special diamond.

fussychica · 30/10/2022 18:12

Art deco for me. I have an art deco diamond with two baguettes on each side, set in platinum. I've had so many compliments on it over the years. I love it.

However, that's me, you should get what you love. Try lots of different styles. I once thought I'd like a sapphire ring, tried some on and fell out of love, didn't wow me at all.

NextPrimeMinister · 30/10/2022 18:49

I'm planning on getting a second hand 3 stone ring. I think a vintage 'aged' ring will never date.

AuntieDolly · 30/10/2022 18:58

Bubble rings seem to be all over the place atm. I like them, but I'd love a vintage diamond daisy ring.

Wishimaywishimight · 30/10/2022 19:24

@Backtobacktheyfacedeachother that's my ring!
