My old passport hasn't been delivered to the passport office. It has been a week. Is this normal?

I sent off my old passport last Monday and paid for 1st class, signed for delivery (this was recommended by the passport office). It still hasn't arrived and I can't initiate an investigation/complaint until around 13 working days have passed. Has anyone had experience of their old passport not being delivered or the timescales for delivery to the passport office?

I don't know about normal but my passport is with passport office at the moment- (they've just asked for a different photo which is a whole other story....)just looking at the text messages and it was 9 days from when I posted old passport to when they acknowledged receipt. So guessing they are a bit behind.

In the same position with DD's renewal, posted a week ago by special delivery and no update yet. I'm assuming it's just in a pile on someone's desk waiting to be looked at.

I sent three passports to three different offices (as annoyingly each online app gave me a different address). All sent on same day, signed for. Two arrived within three days and the third took 5 days to arrive - ironic as that passport office is by far the closest to me. It was delivered on a Friday but the post office tracking website wasn’t updated until the following week and I didn’t get the text confirmation until later that week….so it’s possible it has actually been delivered but the post office and text confirmation just not been sent.

We posted out DDs old passport last Thursday - again by signed for delivery, and no update yet. I do think that Royal Mail is experiencing high delivery delays due to staff sickness (Covid).

Same happened when I posted a present out to someone the other week. Sent first class small package. Took 8 days to get there 😏

Mine were 'signed for' on the Saturday according to RM, then marked as 'recieved' by the passport office on the following Thursday/Friday.

Mine was received by them they then lost it at the passport office so I never got my old one back

I had a passport sent via Special Delivery and lost by the Post Office. I went to my local Post Office to check, as it was clear from the online updates that it was not dispatched and was still in the Port Office building, and luckily they located it there (a week later).

How can you tell if it hasn't been dispatched?

I also posted mine first class signed for last Monday and no sign of it since. Thanks for posting as I was getting worried about it being lost.

Just had the email to say they've got the old passport, phew. Hope everyone else that's waiting for updates hears something soon, too.

Can I hijack this to ask a related question... I paid for a renewal but saw after there's a 10 week wait time so haven't sent off yet. Can I still apply for fast track (and pay again) while there's already an open application?

@HotChoc10 I think you would need to send off you old passport then once they receive it there seems to be an option to speed up the application.

Is it just a straightforward renewal? My DD's just came back within two weeks. She was renewing from a child passport to her first adult passport. I was very impressed with the speed of service.

Do you mean the RM tracking? It hasn't updated at all. It was the passport office who confirmed it had arrived.

I’ve just had a text to say my passport’s been received too even though there’s still no delivery showing on the Royal Mail site. Phew!

It's such a relief, isn't it? Mine was received, approved and has now been sent out all within hours! Hopefully I will get it soon and so will you.
