Black Mirror- White Bear [Contains spoilers]

I don’t condone the death penalty and this type of punishment, I’m not entirely sure how I feel about it. Especially after the recent Arthur and Star case.

For those who don’t know, a woman wakes up in a house with no memory. She finds a photo of a girl who she believes is her daughter.

As she wanders about, she sees people watching and filming. She begs them for help but no one answers.

Then she’s hunted by people in scary masks.

In the end, she ends up in a studio where it’s revealed the girl isn’t her daughter, but a child she helped kidnap, torture and murder with her deceased fiancé.

Her punishment, is this. She gets her memory wiped, and every day she has the same ordeal.

Wakes up, runs, discovers what she did and then it’s all repeated.

The public are encouraged to watch and film.

So? What do you think?

Holy shit, I've never watched any of the Black Mirror episodes before, on account of being a giant wuss, but decided to watch White Bear after reading this and have had to stop for a break halfway through to calm myself down Blush

Excellent though. I'll fortify myself with a hot chocolate and some dog snuggles, and will finish it later.

Some are a lot more tense than others. Give them all a go! You might enjoy some

Oh I love Black Mirror and its commentary on whats going on in society. This is one of the better episodes.

I forget its name, but the one about social media and giving people ratings is a great commentary on how much of a lie social media is

Soubriquet · 19/01/2022 14:15

I wish more episodes would be released but they probably thought COVID was that much of a fuck piece that they didn’t need to add any more Grin

I love Black Mirror, probably my favourite show. So clever and scary how close we could be to all of the scenarios! Gutted to find out they likely won’t make anymore now Sad

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 19/01/2022 14:18

All they not all on Netflix?

ElenaCouch · 19/01/2022 14:19

@JustJustWhy

I'd answer this in the same way I'd answer the question about how I feel about capital punishment. To be able to kill or to torture someone, regardless of what they've done, says more about you than it does about them.
I am pretty sure that given the means I could kill, for example, Ian Watkins. And I'd say that says more about him.
Soubriquet · 19/01/2022 14:21

Yes they are all on Netflix including the interactive bandersnatch

I love Black Mirror. Some episodes are hit or miss but White Bear is probably my favourite. Also love San Junipero, The Entire History Of You and Shut Up And Dance.

Might rewatch this weekend!

Henlie · 19/01/2022 14:29

I remember that ‘White Bear’ episode well. It’s chilling. I hope the world we live in never resorts to doing this.

My favourite of all the ‘BM’ episodes is ‘San Junipero’. I had a good cry at the end. Definitely worth watching if you've not see it before.

BeeBop54 · 19/01/2022 14:53

@ninnynonny

They really are all superb. This and Inside No 9 are my hot faves! The Sheridan Smith one is excellent. I have found some of them I've had to watch twice at least to really get them
Absolutely love inside no.9! I love the one on the sleeper train 😂
Soubriquet · 19/01/2022 14:54

I’m rewatching a lot of them but it m day gave been so long because I can’t remember a couple.

Can’t remember watching white Christmas, Hated in the Nation, Be right back or the Waldo moment.

I’m disturbed by Hated in the Nation.

Just watched Nosedive after reading this thread, so good (and sad).

ninnynonny · 19/01/2022 15:05

Rewatched League of Gentlemen last night as well. We saw them live a few years back. Totally brilliant too

MaryAndHerNet · 19/01/2022 15:06

You've got plenty of people standing by and watching as horrific things happen already.

Too interested in Bake Off and not the plights of those around them. I'm no better.

Soubriquet · 19/01/2022 15:34

Doing nosedive now. Don’t remember seeing this one either Confused

White Bear was brilliant. Also really liked San Junipero and USS Callister.

Anyone seen Playtest? That's the one I always wake up in the night thinking about and then get too scared to go back to sleep Blush

Hated Crocodile. Way too upsetting for me.

ParadiseLaundry · 19/01/2022 15:56

Sorry I didn't reply to your question Soubriqet, I just wanted to join in with the general BM chat Grin

Soubriquet · 19/01/2022 16:07

Ah it’s all good Grin

Soubriquet · 19/01/2022 16:20

Wow at nosedive.

I dread to think what my rating would be. I can be socially awkward.

Dh would be negative. He can be a bit abrupt with people he doesn’t look and he doesn’t like a lot of people Grin

I loved Black Mirror - one of those you wish you could watch again for the first time!

Soubriquet · 19/01/2022 17:20

Christ! Playtest is twisted!!! It’s another one I don’t remember watching

It's an excellent episode and Michael Smiley (Tyres from Spaced) is great in it. I know it's been out for years, but perhaps you'd consider asking for a spoiler alert to be added to the thread?

Leaveitonthefloordrobe · 19/01/2022 18:03

They really leave you thinking and questioning. I'll Be Right Back (I think) was one of the first and just so creepy. You can see why someone would think it was a good idea but in reality it's just so not. But then what do you do with a replica of your deceased husband and father of your child if you no longer want it / him? You can't destroy something that seems so human...but also, it's not human.
