High Heels 👠

This is not a TAAT.

I read this article www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4735171/

I have long since chucked out all of my heels. I can remember having to wear them at work (dark ages when we had to wear a skirt).

On the face of it, they are like modern torture devices (light-hearted). Women are prone to accidents and long term injuries seem to be prevalent. I would never encourage my children to wear them...

Wondering if they will slowly start to disappear, along the lines of clogs and foot binders?

Ok. No one is making you wear them now.

GADDay · 16/01/2022 22:40

I know that - that wasn't really my point.

More about the concept of enduring pain to satisfy a social construct - wondering if people think they will slowly start to disappear.

The fashion and popularity of trainers is fantastic.

I too worked in an era when heels and skirts were common (unspoken but almost expected) office wear. My 3rd/4th toes are crossed over slightly from the narrow stilletoe fashion in the 80s.

I've got 1 pair of posh kitten heels for events that might require it and about 8 pairs of lovely looking heeled boots stored in crates. I should probably start giving a lot of them to Charity.

I look at high heels in every day settings and think they look dated, tortuous and ridiculous. I honestly think they will pretty much dissappear. Like 18th century corsets.

They've already disappeared from my wardrobe. Threw the last pair out last year. A pandemic year in trainers and boots taught me the value of being able to walk properly.

wizzywig · 16/01/2022 22:43

I don't think so. I think There will generally be a pressure for women to look sexy, whether it be heels, bum implants, botox, fillers, etc etc. It depends on whether the person wants to put themselves through that

I wear them. They don’t hurt.

If they did, I wouldn’t wear them.

GADDay · 16/01/2022 22:46

So strange - even now, I won't wear them because they hurt my feet, there is still a small part of me that's conditioned to think they make me look "better".

Same. I've had some heels that hurt, I don't wear them anymore. I have some that don't hurt at all.

(That said, not sure if it's the pandemic, current fashions, my age or the people I go out with now but I'm much more likely to choose flat lace up boots / converse for a night out now than I used to be)

GADDay · 16/01/2022 22:48

Horses for courses, I suppose.

They absolutely kill me. Within half an hour my feet are throbbing and my back hurts.

Oh gosh, I love heels!! Mine won’t be disappearing any time soon.

Shapiro · 16/01/2022 22:48

I don’t wear high heels any more, but when I did as a young woman they never hurt my feet and I could run, hop, skip and jump in them.

They aren’t torture for everyone!

Messilia · 16/01/2022 22:51

I live in heels pretty much. They go on at 7am and don’t come off until I get home at 6ish

Heels that hurt get binned pretty quickly. I have 3 pairs of black stilettos which I keep in rotation. They are very comfy and don’t hurt at all

PizzaDays · 16/01/2022 22:52

I don’t think many people wear them now (maybe in the big cities?) To me, they’re staring to seem old fashioned.

PizzaDays · 16/01/2022 22:53

^ok maybe I’m wrong 😆😅 sorry!

GADDay · 16/01/2022 22:53

I think my hobbit feet prevented me from ever finding a comfy pair.

I honestly can't fathom them being comfortable. Perhaps they are not the domain of the broad of foot 🤔 😉

I love heels. I like the look of them and I like the way I feel when I wear them. I don't wear anything that hurts me and I tend to choose a slightly lower height or thicker heel these days. I don't wear them as often as I used to anymore, but that's because I'm now only working one day a week and rarely go out (mum of preschoolers).

Gymrats · 16/01/2022 22:55

Heels so look dated, but there is no denying that they can also look sexy!

I think it is conditioning. If I’m honest I never want to wear them again but feel I give off a different look from trainers to heels so I suppose I always will?? (Talking about nights out, not everyday wear)

MamaRaisingBoys · 16/01/2022 22:56

I don’t wear them for a night out any more, but can’t imagine going to a wedding or somewhere in an evening gown without them

Refrosty · 16/01/2022 22:57

They won't go anywhere. Thin eyebrows are back, I rest my case Grin

But seriously, perhaps they'll not be used as frequently but heels won't disappear. Never. In any case, all heels are not the same. Not all of them hurt. I've never worn heels casually. I quite like wearing them every now and again at events. I dislike the way they get compared to torture... it's my choice to pierce my ears, wear an underwired bra and fling on some heels. I don't feel tortured.

Sandygran · 16/01/2022 22:59

I used to wear them for nights out when I was younger, but they just kill my feet nowadays.
Every year when they have that episode of The Apprentice where they have to dash around a city finding all sorts of objects I wonder why the 'girls' handicap themselves by tottering around in high heels - might as well be shackled!

OldWivesTale · 16/01/2022 22:59

They really are awful. Can you imagine men wearing anything so cripplingly uncomfortable because we women like the way they look? I'm glad they're becoming dated; hopefully our daughters will never wear them.

GADDay · 16/01/2022 22:59

@refrosty

I do feel tortured though. Literally - the pain is awful.

I ♥ my 👠👠👠
On a night out I don't know anyone who doesn't wear them.

RussianSpy101 · 16/01/2022 23:01

@OldWivesTale I wear mine because I like the way the look. Not anybody else.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/01/2022 23:11

I’m 50. I’ve never owned any. A pair of wedges, and a pair of kitten heels, both about 2” high, that’s as high as it gets.
