High Heels 👠

GADDay · 16/01/2022 22:30

This is not a TAAT.

I read this article www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4735171/

I have long since chucked out all of my heels. I can remember having to wear them at work (dark ages when we had to wear a skirt).

On the face of it, they are like modern torture devices (light-hearted). Women are prone to accidents and long term injuries seem to be prevalent. I would never encourage my children to wear them...

Wondering if they will slowly start to disappear, along the lines of clogs and foot binders?

I hate heels. Never found a pair that didn't kill me.

I wear shoes that I like and don't wreck my feet now. I don't really need them as I tower over everyone anyway.

InnPain · 16/01/2022 23:16

I love trainers, look daft walking in heels so never bother with them. Block heels I can manage but anything too narrow and I lose my footing

MmeD · 16/01/2022 23:17

How high are we talking though? 3 inches? 5?

@GADDay Happily, we don't have to wear them and there's little expectation to now, compared to last century. Progress is that women still have the choice to wear them if they want.

I actually reaaaallly detest handbags. They're too impractical for me, since I like both arms to be free and not needing to guard the precious thing against the cruel world. I'm glad rucksacks are becoming fancier, but I know handbags aren't going anywhere. I wouldn't wish them to.
@OldWivesTale I wear mine because I like the way the look. Not anybody else.
Yes but why do you like how they look? We live in a patriarchal society and we absorb its definition of what is and isn't "beautiful".

coogee · 16/01/2022 23:24

Six, tops.

I do tend to wear something lower to put the bins out.

Notcontent · 16/01/2022 23:24

In London people don’t wear them out anymore - at least not the young professional women I work with.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 16/01/2022 23:29

I love my heels.

Prefer chunky heels now to stilettos from a comfort POV but I won't throw out any of my stilettos.

Even DS loves to stomp around the house in them.

I worked in hotels until about 4 years ago and was only allowed to wear dresses or skirts with 3 inch heels despite my main job being setting up function rooms so rolling around 6ft round tables and stacks of 10 chairs on a chair pully. AFAIK they still expect the ladies to wear these

Annabelle69 · 16/01/2022 23:29

Another reason I don't wear heels or carry a handbag. Safety. Experience has taught me that if I need to run or get out of a dangerous situation, then I want to be fully mobile. I just carry a phone in my pocket with a few cards inside. Less of a mugging target too.

Kite22 · 16/01/2022 23:33

They have been on the way out for ages.

Like you, when I started work the men wore a suit and the ladies a skirt and a nice court shoe.
Now, a huge number of people wear flats in one form or another - from brogues to ballet pumps, from ankle boots to trainers.

My dc wear trainers out clubbing. I wish we'd been able to. The bouncers wouldn't have let us in, back in the day.

Don't get me wrong, I do think there is something about a nice pair of high heels that really lifts an outfit, and I do wish I could still wear them, but what I love is there is no longer the expectation even when "dressing up" to wear them if you don't want to, and in terms of work wear, very few people are still expected to wear them all day every day.
I love the fact there is choice now. Smile

I remember being at Beauty therapy/hairdressing college in the mid 80's.
If we didn't turn up in at least a 4" heel ( wearing at least three blended eyeshadow coloursHmm ) we were reprimanded. These were strict rules.
Some days we only finished with clients at 9pm. 12 hours in heels.
Utter bollocks.

IamChipmunk · 17/01/2022 07:06

Im a teacher, I still wear heels to work. I only wore flats when I was pregnant and they hurt my back.
I only wear comfy heels to work as Im on my feet a lot. There is no expectation to but I like them.

For going out it varies but I would be more likely to wear a lower chunky heeled boot or trainers depending on what I was doing. (I rarely go out out to be fair!) I would still wear more of a stilleto heel to a wedding.
I got married in 2015 and still wore a heel although a lower one as I knew I would be likely to be stood all day. I still hav my shoes (dyed raspberry pink, beautifull things!!)
I have about 30 pairs of 'dress' shoes in varying colours (not expensive ones!)
I can't bring myself to throw them out. My dd who is 5 loves to put them on. Ill probably save them and by the time she is 18 and going out they will all be back in fsshion and she can have them!
If she laughs at me and only owns trainers then ill bin them at that point!

NoraLuka · 17/01/2022 07:15

I used to wear heels occasionally but chucked them all out a few years ago, hate wearing them and hopefully will never have to again! My teenage DDs never wear them, apparently they are for “older women” although to them that’s anyone over the age of about 25 Grin

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 17/01/2022 07:31

For all those of you saying that you wear them and they don’t hurt - I was one of you! I now have to wear flat shoes as I have permanent damage to the nerves in one of my feet which causes pain when I walk. The podiatrist is pretty sure that it’s due to years of wearing heels at work.

I'd have point blank refused
Buildingthefuture · 17/01/2022 07:52

I love my heels! I have loads and will never be parted from them. Don’t wear them all the time (not practical for my day job) but I wear them whenever I go out. And I couldn’t care less if they are “in” or “out”, I feel great in them. Personally I hate the current trend for massive clunky shoes, but to each their own.

Annabelle69 · 17/01/2022 09:16

@OldWivesTale makes an interesting point. I be really interested to hear the answer too. "Why did you like how they look?" Is it unconscious social conditioning? For those that say they're extremely comfortable, to the point you'd rather wear them than flats, then why don't men wear them too?

iglpgl · 17/01/2022 09:19

They're awful, and hideous for the feet.

That said, a lot of flat shoes are not exactly healthy either: anything with pointed toes is going to contort feet.

Zero-drop, foot-shaped shoes are the way forward.

Hoppinggreen · 17/01/2022 09:21

I used to love them but after pre eclampsia with DD my feet never returned to their usual size and shape. I soldiered on for a while but never found comfortable ones (other than a Gabor low wedge which aren’t very glam and a couple of pairs of boots). I did buy some but they sat unused and then I took them all to a high end dress agency to sell for me.
I won’t wear uncomfortable shoes at all now and thankfully high heels seem less fashionable than 10 or more years ago

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 17/01/2022 09:21

I hate them. I think they look horrible on anyone.

iglpgl · 17/01/2022 09:21

@GADDay

I know that - that wasn't really my point.

More about the concept of enduring pain to satisfy a social construct - wondering if people think they will slowly start to disappear.

I really hope so. Those who say they're "comfy" have just got used to them. If you'd not already been wearing them for years, would they be comfy from the first wear? I doubt it; our bodies aren't designed to walk like that.
GADDay · 17/01/2022 09:42

@iglpgl yup I agree that our bodies are not designed to walk around on tiptoes.

Well. I love heels and am still looking for the perfect ones. Why? Because they take half a stone off me at least when I wear them.
