Help us Mumsnet...

We want to watch a movie tonight and looking for a suggestion that is based on an artist’s life, along side the likes of Ray, Judy, Rocketman, and Bohemian Rhapsody...

What have I missed that’s amazing!

Have you ever seen Shakespeare in love? Not a true account of his life as such but a great film.

Also Walk the Line about Johnny cash with Joaquin Phoenix and Reece Witherspoon.

Oh, and if you want something a bit quirky try Ed wood with Johnny depp. It's directed by Tim Burton - I love it.

JDaytona · 16/01/2022 21:34

There was a Turner film a few years ago with Timothy Spall in it.

@Bluebluemoon39 thanks will check out, though how could I have missed Walk the Line, one of my favourites!

Loving-Vincent - about Van Gogh

Lostcountofnamechanges · 16/01/2022 21:37

Sorry I probably worded that wrong, was more a musician/actor side of the word Artist!

Maudie 😍 not sure if it’s exactly what you’re after but I loved it. Netflix I think.

YogaLite · 16/01/2022 21:39

Midnight in Paris - not a bio or about any individual artist but a few pop up - Hemingway, Picasso, Dali, Fitzgerald and a few more..

Shapiro · 16/01/2022 21:39

Lady sings the blues.

Owlink · 16/01/2022 21:39

I Saw the Light - Tom Hiddleston as Hank Williams. I don't think it did well in the USA - quite an effete limey playing a rugged bluegrass musician - but I really liked it.

WakeUpLockie · 16/01/2022 21:40

Sorry it’s actually Amazon!

NeedToKnow101 · 16/01/2022 21:40

Frida? About Frida Khalo. Haven't seen it myself, tbh.

RAOK · 16/01/2022 21:42

Maudie was great. The Lowry one with Timothy Spall is good too.

NeedToKnow101 · 16/01/2022 21:42

Closer, about Ian Curtis of Joy Division

OhThatChicken · 16/01/2022 21:43

Tick Tick Boom. Andrew Garfield plays Jonathan Larson, the writer and creator who wrote Rent.

It’s a musical and it’s phenomenal.

Gingernaut · 16/01/2022 21:45

The tragic 1952 film Moulin Rouge about the painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

Thhhhheeeeelong · 16/01/2022 21:47

'An Angel at my Table' on Netflix. Made in the 90's in New Zealand by Jane Campion of 'The Piano' and based on New Zealand writer Janet Frames life (set earlier from the 1930's up to the 1960's. Wont give too much away but she lived a very difficult life and still managed to become one of New Zealand's (the worlds) most important writers.

Haven't seen this but La Vie en Rose, 2007 - Marion Cotillard plays Edith Piaf.

Have seen this - it's very good. Chaplin, 1992 - Robert Downey Jr plays Charlie Chaplin.

PerkingFaintly · 16/01/2022 21:48

Love is the Devil about the painter Francis Bacon.

Not entirely to my taste, but critically acclaimed.

Plus one for this!

I loved La Vie En Rose about Edith Piaf but it's quite tough viewing IIRC.

I saw,a movie recently about Brian Wilson which I really enjoyed - will have a look for it -

colouringindoors · 16/01/2022 21:50

Frida about Frida Kahlo is excellent and fascinating about an incredible woman.

PermanentTemporary · 16/01/2022 21:50
  • Love and Mercy. Think it was streaming somewhere quite recently.
PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 16/01/2022 21:51

What's the animated/painted one about Vincent Van Gogh called? Not what I was expecting, but I loved it!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 16/01/2022 21:54
