Help us Mumsnet...

We want to watch a movie tonight and looking for a suggestion that is based on an artist’s life, along side the likes of Ray, Judy, Rocketman, and Bohemian Rhapsody...

What have I missed that’s amazing!

Basquiat

The People v Larry Flint
“Artist” might be a bit of a stretch but an excellent film.

The Tina Turner one, what's love got to do with it.

There the aaliyah one (no rights to music)

A tlc one.

Mrs Lowry was a good watch.

Ieatmarmite · 16/01/2022 22:23

I really like Topsy-turvy, the Mike Leigh film about Gilbert & Sullivan.

Respect - Aretha Franklin

Comefromaway · 16/01/2022 22:28

@OhThatChicken

Tick Tick Boom. Andrew Garfield plays Jonathan Larson, the writer and creator who wrote Rent.

It’s a musical and it’s phenomenal.

I recently watched Tick Tick Boom it's brilliant.

Jersey Boys? Based on the Four Seasons. Saw the stage version and it was fab, haven't seen the film yet though.

Coal Miner's Daughter. The story of Loretta Lynn. What a life!

wtftodo · 16/01/2022 23:08

Another vote for Basquiat, about the artist. 80s New York, warhol art set, Madonna...

Clawdy · 17/01/2022 08:22

Nowhere Boy - the John Lennon story.

Another thread where people haven't even bothered to read the OP

It is pretty clear from the first post that OP is looking for films about musicians - she has actually named some examples.

Why are so many people suggesting painters?

WakeUpLockie · 17/01/2022 10:13

Because painters fall under the heading of ‘artist’ just as musicians do? I have no idea who the OP is referring to by Ray and Judy, for all I know they’re sculptors.

ShinyPikachu · 17/01/2022 10:20

I'm a bit late now but there's one called Get On Up about James Brown which I enjoyed a few years ago. Like the Tina Turner one there are some tough scenes too though.

hivemindneeded · 17/01/2022 10:26

If you like country music there are loads of brilliant films.

Walk the Line about June Carter's relationship with Johnny Cash is very good.

Sweet Dreams - biopic of Patsy Cline

The Coalminer's Daughter about Loretta Lynn

Pollock is a good biopic about artist Jackson Pollock with Ed Harris in the title role.

Not exactly the same but Yesterday is quite fun, about a man who wakes up in a universe in which the Beatles never existed and gets famous 'writing' their songs from memory.

SnowDropMania · 17/01/2022 11:15

Rocketman

SnowDropMania · 17/01/2022 11:15

Oops missed that in your op
