Which switch game do I really need?

I’ve but the bullet and bought a Switch for myself (the family).

I have a 2 and 5 year old. The 5 year old will want Let’s Go Pikachu but we won’t be buying it for a few weeks when he has enough reward stars.

I don’t have lots of money to spent buying games straight away (especially as last minute I went for the Oled model so went over budget!) What do I really need a s a good starting point?

Animal crossing, mario kart, mario party all good, look out for digital sales so you can download rather than having loads of tiny game chips that will get easily lost. You might need to get an SD memory card as well though.
Also have a look through the online shop for some of the indie games, they have some great ones for only a few pounds!

APurpleSquirrel · 12/01/2022 12:42

Absolutely LOVE Zelda Breath of the Wild! DD (7) loves it too & we're playing her game now (DH & I technically finished it a few months ago but recently bought the expansion pack so are working through it too).
Also love Zelda Hyrule Warriors.
Found Animal Crossing a bit boring & unfortunately we let DD play first so it's her island etc.
Stardew Valley is similar but a bit more interesting imho.

APurpleSquirrel · 12/01/2022 12:42

Oh & can't wait for Zelda BOTW 2 to come out this year!!

No offence, but Let's Go Pikachu is old and a bit crap! Blush There was a free demo and it was very simple and super boring.

I would look at Sword and Shield or there is a brand new one Pokemon Arceus coming out at the end of the month.

Also for that age look at Yoshi's Crafted World (great for a younger age), Mario Kart, Super Mario Bros.

For you - Animal Crossing and Zelda.

CoodleMoodle · 12/01/2022 12:56

Not necessarily all for DC, but I have a 7yo and 3yo and they enjoy playing or watching us play:

Mario Kart
Animal Crossing
Super Mario 3D World & Bowser's Fury
Pokemon Snap
Lego City Undercover (and every other Lego game!)
Overcooked (All You Can Eat)
KeyWe
Untitled Goose Game

Check the store often, there's always sales. The big games very very rarely go on sale unfortunately, but I picked up AC and SMW3D for £36 in Currys, instead of £50 on the store.

FooFighter99 · 12/01/2022 13:44

I got Lego Harry Potter for my birthday and it's brilliant

Fallen out of love with Animal Crossing, but it's still a fab game (nearly completed it, then restarted my island a MASSIVELY regretted it Sad )

DD loves Minecraft and Untitled Goose Game

Mario Kart is fun for all the family! and the Ring Fit Adventure game is alright too

Bendyandthestinkmachine · 12/01/2022 17:07

@MiddleClassProblem

Marion party and mario kart are great together games.

There’s a great animal crossing thread on here, very supportive and helpful (told me about an app where you can keep a record of what you still have to collect).

I got a big board in Zelda though.

DD really got into minecraft last year when she was 6 so that might be a future consideration.

We really enjoy the Lego games and they have been a great starter for DD into gaming.

Warning for animal crossing, I set up my lovely island but didn’t realise that when DD played on her profile, she would be on the same island. It is now her island with crap everywhere and I rarely play…

This is why I have my own switch after the DC and I had creative differences with Animal Crossing.

I reset DS2 island at Christmas and he asked me to get him to three stars because he CBA but wants terraforming. Even now he's complaining about me doing stuff. Angry I'm going to time travel and do it in one day I think.

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 12/01/2022 17:12

As others have said Animal Crossing and Zelda are essential. Splatoon 2 is a winner in our house as is Big Brain Academy : Brain v Brain. DS has Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and is loving that but Zelda reigns supreme with him. :-)

UnaOfStormhold · 12/01/2022 20:25

We have been playing BOTW on the Wii U, think we're going to have to get a Switch when BOTW 2 comes out as I loved that game so much!

Goonergirl14 · 12/01/2022 20:33

My two DS are lucky to have a switch each. Luigi's Mansion 3 is fab, all Suoer Mario games are really, they also have Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario Odyssey but I find these tricky if I play them!

Morghulis · 12/01/2022 20:38

Stardew Valley - but prepare to lose a lot of time to it 😁 also Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu is not crap - it’s a remake of the original Pokémon gameboy games which everyone knows are the best 😉

notnowdennis · 12/01/2022 20:39

More votes for Zelda, mario cart, mario party and animal crossing. We love Abzu and OxenFree for the more Indy games. Goose game is hilarious.

KitKat1985 · 12/01/2022 20:44

Your kids would probably love Animal Crossing.

I got Zelda: Breath of the Wild for Christmas and I'm loving it. It does take a while to get the knack of the controls though and I find it quite hard in places.

witch000 · 12/01/2022 20:47

Harry Potter Lego , actually any of the Lego games.

user1745 · 12/01/2022 21:01

Lego Worlds is very good (more for the 5 year old than a toddler though)

Occitane · 12/01/2022 23:45

Just thought of two more, Lego Harry Potter, as others have said, and Pikmin, that’s really fun.

AutumnColours9 · 13/01/2022 01:21

Animal crossing
Breath of the wild (amazing beyond belief)
Mario Party
Mario 3d World
Yoshy woolly world
Pokemon
Minecraft

AutumnColours9 · 13/01/2022 01:21

Yes agree the lego games are brilliant!

oncemoreunto · 13/01/2022 01:39

I love animal crossing.

I don't have the dexterity to play Zelda properly.

ChangeNameAndGo · 13/01/2022 07:00

Tetris 99. Strangely addictive and infuriating but great if you are after a quick game.

I also LOVE saints row but that is definitely an acquired taste!! I played through them many times on the ps3 and 4 so I'm very biased lol.

My 4 year old loves Mario kart and we find it's great to play as a family

PeterPomegranate · 13/01/2022 07:04

Our 6 year old got a handheld switch for Xmas. He also got minecraft, mario cart and Lego city undercover. That’s the one he plays the most - his reading isn’t v good and he doesn’t do the missions but just drives / runs around taking people’ cars and crashing into things. Honestly he loves it.

tinierclanger · 13/01/2022 07:07

Agree sword/shield is a better Pokémon game than Let’s Go Pikachu.

Troublesometooth · 13/01/2022 07:13

This. As it’s for my 5 year old who can’t read well yet I thought the keys go would be simpler for him. He can’t read the missions on the more advanced games.

It all sounds very exciting- as a total newbie, which switch would be best for my 7 and 9 year olds- we don’t have a lot of cash so I need to get it right!

adollopofthisandthat · 13/01/2022 07:30

Pressed post too soon @Troublesometooth how easy is it to learn how to play (for me and my mum) so we can join in with the kids?
