Which switch game do I really need?

I’ve but the bullet and bought a Switch for myself (the family).

I have a 2 and 5 year old. The 5 year old will want Let’s Go Pikachu but we won’t be buying it for a few weeks when he has enough reward stars.

I don’t have lots of money to spent buying games straight away (especially as last minute I went for the Oled model so went over budget!) What do I really need a s a good starting point?

Fortnite for yourself. Free to download.

You'll likely need extra storage too once you have a few games on the switch. I had to delete stuff like YouTube from it to make discs for hand updates

Gufo · 13/01/2022 08:26

Mario Party for the family
Animal Crossing for you
DS loves FIFA22 and Tokyo Olympics

@adollopofthisandthat

It all sounds very exciting- as a total newbie, which switch would be best for my 7 and 9 year olds- we don’t have a lot of cash so I need to get it right!
From the research I did there are 3 options:

Switch Lite- it’s the cheapest, but they would need a device each to play together. It can’t be hooked up to the TV.

Switch- can be played by one person as a handheld, or you can take the controllers off and either use the screen to have a controller each and play together, or hook up to the TV

Oled model- same as the switch above but better screen quality and larger storage.

@adollopofthisandthat

Pressed post too soon *@Troublesometooth* how easy is it to learn how to play (for me and my mum) so we can join in with the kids?
I would go for the normal switch if money is tight, especially as the games are expensive.

It’s very easy to use!

Sneaked on here to follow... I got a switch last Christmas but have struggled to find any games I really enjoy.
A few years ago I had a Nintendo DS and absolutely loved The Sims castaway and also the professor Layton series.

The professor Layton switch game just isn't the same and there have been no sims games released which is disappointing. I've got animal crossing but I've struggled to get into that too.

Maybe it's me- perhaps I've changed since the years of my DS!!!

Looking with interest at the Zelda BOTW recommendations- can someone explain what you actually have to do as it's quite expensive to join my growing pile of discarded games!

IncyWincyGrownUp · 13/01/2022 10:29

We’re a switch household, over the years we’ve acquired enough to have one each. Best value games here have been:

Mario, kart, odyssey, and the rereleases of old games. There’s proper old school N64 and SNES ones too if you have Nintendo online.

Zelda BOTW, not a personal favourite, but my middle child was silent for hours at a time playing this, then replaying it, then getting the DLC with his pocket money and playing it again.

ACNH, my eldest and I play this together on an evening. It’s nice to be able to interact with each other’s islands.

Minecraft and Terraria, middle and youngest have had a lot of use out of these, they like the sandbox type element of minecraft, and the gritty giant floating eye and wall of flesh of terraria. Grotty beasts, my younglings.

Untitled Goose, fun if you can buy it cheap. The youngest likes to go around stealing hats for half an hour, seems to be therapeutic for him. Odd child.

Among Us, oddly amuses the younger two to play against each other so they can shout about things not being fair. It’s amazing the lengths siblings will go to to have a wobbler at each other! :o

Monster Hunter. I have no idea what it’s about, but the middle child will devote many many hours of his day to discussing the minutia of it while missing the fact that I’m nodding and smiling on the outside, while dying of boredom on the inside.

@AlbertBridge you are totally right!!! Grin

TheresSomebodyAtTheDoorNeil · 13/01/2022 10:35

Animal crossing for sure!

dreamingbohemian · 13/01/2022 10:38

For anyone playing Zelda, or if you want to get an idea of it, I recommend the Polygon help pages:

www.polygon.com/zelda-breath-of-the-wild-guide-walkthrough

I didn't think I would like it either but I played it obsessively for months!

I also really liked Fenyx Rising, which is a lot like BOTW only in a Greek mythology setting.

Loads of games have ripped off BOTW which means BOTW 2 will probably be even better, just to keep the edge.

Following, my 10yo got a Switch for Christmas and it's our first console apart from an elderly Wii. She's got animal crossing, Mario 3D or something and Just Dance. Looking for other games too.

coodawoodashooda · 13/01/2022 10:41

Do you need something extra to do Just Dance?

coodawoodashooda · 13/01/2022 10:42

Do you need something extra to do Just Dance?
Oh i see. Those wrist things.
IncyWincyGrownUp · 13/01/2022 10:43

Just the joycons, @coodawoodashooda.

adollopofthisandthat · 13/01/2022 10:54

thanks @Troublesometooth that is really helpful, I'm a bit nervous about it (buying one and using it!) but if you say it's easy then I'll get on with it!

babyboyHarrison · 13/01/2022 11:01

A couple of cheaper games that have gone down well here, £10-15 ish. Shawn the sheep and rayman.

My DS really enjoyed Rayman Legends (I think it's called) which seems to be a cheaper game, he has played it loads.

If you like mind bending puzzle games then I recommend 'Baba is you', which has some fiendishly hard levels, but DS and I work on them together.

We found another rather whimsical one called 'Old Man's Journey' which was a sweet puzzle game, though rather short in the end.

DS would also recommend 'Pikuniku' which he was obsessed with for quite a while - the characters are very endearing.

Lots of these games were on offer for download for pennies - it isn't all £30+ games like you buy in the shops.

risefromyourgrave · 13/01/2022 11:16

Rayman Legends and Pikmin 3 are brilliant. Lego City is a great game and Animal Crossing has taken much too much of my free time from me!

UpsyDaisysarmpit · 13/01/2022 11:22

Mario Party and Mario Kart both fun for multiplayer games with the family.
Just Dance is good but be warned you have a subscription to pay to get the good range of songs, which is a bit of a con IMO after paying 50 quid for a game.
You need the online membership for a lot of things so worth getting (especially as there are games available on there).

ChrissyPlummer · 13/01/2022 11:25

If you buy a subscription to Nintendo (about £18 a year) you can play all the old classics like Mario 1-3, SuperMario World, Yoshis Story, Donkey Kong. There’s also a Mega Drive download. I enjoy those.

negomi90 · 13/01/2022 11:28

Zelda botw is officially a fighting game where you follow quests to fight monsters and free the kingdom from the baddy.
But it's open world and there's lots to explore without following the story. You can climb things, glide off them, tame and ride horses, hunt cook. There are also shrines which are really cool puzzles often with interesting physics.
The graphics are beautiful.
You can do what you want in it and it's designed that way. So it can be a fantasy fighter, craft game or anything you want.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 13/01/2022 11:34

Love BOTW. Big Zelda fan though. Recently dug out my gamecube Majora's mask and ocarina collection.

What about Minecraft? I got DD it for Xmas, she's 6 and obsessed with it.

rambleonplease · 13/01/2022 11:35

Mario kart is fun, Mario party even better for little ones.

ShinyHappyPoster · 13/01/2022 11:37

I love Agent A. Graphics are gorgeous and you have to solve puzzles to track down a spy.

Idontbelieveit14 · 13/01/2022 12:21

Sorry to hi-Jack the thread but wondering if anyone can recommend any games my 4 year old could play independently?
