NC. We've had to name Leonbergers before but we're struggling this time. She's a girl and we're looking for something that trips off the tongue for calling and would really suit a Leonberger specifically, rather than a more general dog name. TIA.

I'm sulking at the lack of photos but am suggesting: Gertie, short for Gertrude or Gertrud to be truly Teutonic. She could come stay with me for a bit so I could give this proper thought and a more considered response? It would be no trouble 😉.

@PuppyPonderings

Personally I think three syllables work best,

I’d love a Leonberger. We have had Bernese but currently dogless 😢

Furries · 05/01/2022 01:54

I think it can be easy to head down the route of finding a “clever” name (have been guilty of this myself in the past).

I’d say spend a day or two with her when she arrives and a name may well arrive naturally (though “oi, bitey sod” might not be advisable!)

Personally, I think two syllables is better for dogs - both for the owner saying it and for the dog hearing it.

As others have said, a photo would be lovely. I lost my Leo girl last month - they really are the best, the biggest lumps of gentle love.

Is this your first Leo (I know you’ve said you have had giant breeds before)? Just make sure you take loads of photos between 8 weeks to around 20 weeks old. It’s staggering, now I look back, to see how quickly she changed. At about 13 weeks her paws and her ears/head were HUGE - looked like she’d never grow into them. And then, all of a sudden, she looked like a teenager.

Sending lots of Lean-on-Berger wishes your way - brace those kneecaps, they love a good lean-in !

I love leons, i love the name Stella

Netaporter · 05/01/2022 02:38

Aww I’ve got a Leo, they’re awesome he was already 10kgs at 8wks 🤣. A significant amount of girl Leo’s are called Elsa, Nala or Gaia already… if she makes it to Crufts that could be a problem 😉Obviously we need puppy pics so we can help you name her… My vote would be Portia. If you’ve not owned one before I Hope you’re ready for the winter coat shedding season! All the best for your new bundle of fur..

Netaporter · 05/01/2022 02:40

Flowers for @Furries so sorry for your loss. It’s awful when you lose one, hope you’re doing ok.

Aah, thank you. I’m doing “ok” in public and totally shit in private! I was blessed to have her. My health changed a lot a few years in, but she took it in her stride and was the most amazing girl I could have wished for.

Anyway, not derailing this further, a new Leo puppy is what I’m here for. It never gets old, the “squeal” of spotting/hearing about a new a Leo 🐾💕

Aah, the shedding of the winter coat! Which goes on and on and on 🤣

This is from a 10 minute session. And then just continues. I really should have looked into ways to make money from this. I did read an article once about a woman who turned it into yarn and made a couple of jumpers. I think they were fairly waterproof!

@Furries I also read about the woman who spun her husky hair into yarn. My first thought was a Leo jumper would be more elegant and probably go with jeans better 😂 The OP has all of this to come. Looking forward to the pics 🥰
