Music

Reads books to dd

Smart switches to control side lamps on routine timers

Smart bulb control...dd ALWAYS leaves her light on and I don't always have tome to run up and turn it off before bundling her out the door in the morning

News occasionally

Alarms of I am particularly tired

The drop in feature for dd's one is brilliant...no longer have to yell upstairs I cam just use drop in to tell her tra is ready etc

Justyou · 01/01/2022 23:37

@Zireael

If struggling to sleep, I ask her to play 30 minutes of spa music - works every time
Is this literally all I need to do or do you need to add the sleep/spa program to it?
Rummikub · 01/01/2022 23:42

I’ve got an echo for Xmas.
Can it do all of the above too? I only wanted it as a radio

Yes!

I love Alexa.

silentpool · 01/01/2022 23:47

Kitchen timer
Plays brown noise on loop while I sleep
Smart plugs/smart devices - it turns my bedside lamp on and off which is great.
Weather
Speaker

Rummikub · 01/01/2022 23:48

Oo ok
I like the idea of a morning routine
I’m rubbish at getting out of bed

Heronatemygoldfish · 01/01/2022 23:49

Alarms
Timers
Lights on smart plugs
Music, both streamed and off my phone
Weather
I want a smart camera to watch my bird feeders!

I also log into my elderly DF's Alexa and drop in on him. He has lights on smart plugs linked to sunset and which go off after bedtime so he doesn't worry about them getting left on. I also have a heater on a smartplug so he can ask her to turn it on if he gets cold. He is nearly 90 and loves being able to ask for music he likes!

It's amazing that when he was born there was only radio. He marvels at what we can now do.

I'm currently catching up with lots of my books on Audible via Alexa. I love it, I can really focus on my books while doing other stuff.

My morning routine takes me through the headlines, weather & traffic to work.

Shopping list is a saviour. Kids use it so I don't have to nag for any items they use / know we are out of, as they'll add them in.

A nice feature with music is asking Alexa to play music from a particular day / time eg yesterday evening - if you know you enjoyed the music at dinner but can't remember it.

My youngest (10) is great at knowing what you can ask Alexa to do, I get loads of ideas from him.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 01/01/2022 23:51

We do the daily trivia quiz....dd loves it !

maddy68 · 01/01/2022 23:52

Mainly musoc and Google searches

StarryNightSky26 · 01/01/2022 23:55

The shopping list.

Everytime something runs out or is running low, 'Alexa add xyz to the shopping list'.
Then anytime DH or I are at the supermarket, we bring up the shopping list on the app and buy it.

I never tend to forget the essentials like milk and bread etc - but it's great to ensure we remember the more obscure or lesser bought things like vinegar, herbs, handwash, bleach - the type of things that I'd always forget to buy when they'd run out before!

msbevvy · 02/01/2022 00:03

I use Alexa for the usual timers, lights, radio and music but the most useful function for me has been "Alexa, find my phone". I am always putting it down somewhere and not able to find it.

If only Alexa could help me find the remote controls when they go walkabout.

Blueberryflavour · 02/01/2022 00:04

Smart plugs especially just now for Christmas lights.
All kinds of music from nursery rhymes to heavy metal (and Let it go about a million times)
Grandchildren ask Alexa to tell them jokes and ask Alexa questions about herself and they love the special seasonal messages.
We also encourage them to say thank you to Alexa when she has done something for them, so that reinforces good manners.
To ring my phone when I can’t find it.
To ring our tiles attached to our keys so Alexa will ring our keys and we can find them.

SmellyOldPartridgeinaPearTree · 02/01/2022 00:17

White noise at night

Telling DS it's time for bed (go to routines if you want to do this. She'll say 'Jane( or whatever) , it's time for bed!' at the same time every night)

Fart noises

Listening to the radio

I like thunderstorm sounds! Also blizzard sounds for when I need something heavy duty.
Cheeseboardandcrackers · 02/01/2022 09:01

Living room lamp on a timer.

Bedside lamps for asking her to turn off/on, good for when you are bringing upstairs cups of tea/coffee on a tray and you only have one pair of hands…

Music
Audio books.

Seriously considering one of those robovacs….

Mumski45 · 02/01/2022 09:20

This has made me realise I have no idea how much more I could be using her for!

buckleten · 02/01/2022 09:41

I use it when I can't sleep to play thunderstorm or rain on a tent - there are so many relaxing sounds she can play, and some not so relaxing! Also use it for news, weather updates, random questions, crossword help, music and read a bedtime story.

FinishWhatWeStarted · 02/01/2022 09:43

I've just had a look and can't work it out at all 😂I need an idiots guide
