Best alcohol for no hangover? At a function at the weekend, long day, would like to have a few drinks but terrified of a hangover. Any tips?

Gin buy I will give you a patent pending hangover cure for free as it's New Year's Eve and I'm feeling generous: Grin
Before bed drink a pint of berocca with a dioralite sachet mixed in to it. Take two paracetamol. Wake up feeling actually better than you would on a normal day!

I have tested this extensively and it's never failed me once.

For me, vodka, I think because you can get each measure with plenty of mixer which naturally helps slow your drinking down without feeling deprived.

For me it's gin. I cannot drink any amount of wine any more as it makes me want to die the next day.

@Magnited

Organic wine, about 12%.
Absolutely organic wine all day long. None of the crap that makes me feel awful. Even better, biodynamic wine. Stuff of the gods

I take anti sickness tablets from the day before. Ibuprofen before I start drinking and before bed, and stop drinking a good bit before bed and have something to eat at least an hour before going to sleep.
Interesting about the vitamin C. I'll need to try that.

I drink gin and used to drink vodka, I've still had terrible hangovers. The thing about drinking light coloured drinks is a complete myth.

MrsMariaReynolds · 31/12/2021 13:28

Clear spirits are best, and avoid sugary mixers. Diet coke and vodka is my tipple of choice.

liveforsummer · 31/12/2021 14:01

The worst hangovers I've had are when I've not eaten before I start drinking. Gin is usually the best thigh with a good amount of tonic, followed by white wine. Rose always leaves me really groggy the next day. Any other spirits or cocktails just not worth the punishment

Not for everyone. I don't get much of a hangover with gin. Get an awful one with wine. Somewhere in between with beer/ cider.

Someone further down explained exactly why dark drinks can be worse but if you're prone to hangovers anyway you probably wouldn't notice the difference

There is a lot of bollocks being spouted on this thread. Why would a high dose of vitamin c or a berocca prevent a hangover? Don't you think if it did, someone would have come up with a "Hangover-B-Gone" brand name for it and be charging a fiver a pill at the door of clubs and pubs? If you think it helps you, carry on and enjoy the placebo effect, but there's no proof it's doing anything physical to you.

Scientific studies haven't even confirmed exactly what causes a hangover, or why some people get them so much worse than others. From the BMJ: "No compelling evidence exists to suggest that any conventional or complementary intervention is effective for preventing or treating alcohol hangover. The most effective way to avoid the symptoms of alcohol induced hangover is to avoid drinking."

Because drinking alcohol depletes vitamin B and C so you are replacing what you have lost. It might not be an out and out cure but it certainly can take the edge off.

Candycats · 31/12/2021 17:49

For some reason cider doesn't seem to give me a hangover, drank pint after pint not long ago and miraculously felt okay the next day! Might not be the most glam thing to drink but fortunately I don't really care Grin I agree that red wine hangovers are the WORST.

MilitantFaucet · 31/12/2021 17:55

Champagne or cava but not Prosecco

JohnSmithDrive · 31/12/2021 18:02

Berrocca before you go out and another when you get home, mixed with one of those sports rehydration tablets in a pint of water. I always take a bottle of water for the journey home too and aim to stop drinking by about 9pm.

Original Luckozade in the morning is something I've only discovered this year and seems to help a lot.

delilahbucket · 31/12/2021 18:05

A clear and decent quality spirit and lots of water. The headache is usually dehydration.

Hoppinggreen · 31/12/2021 22:20

I used to work with junior Doctors.
They reckoned ibuprofen or similar and omeprazole before you start and then a vit c shot before bed (or something containing it for those with it easy access to syringes). If they were working they would often set up saline drips first thing.
Obviously these people were (allegedly) trained professionals So I am not advocating prescription medicines for people who aren’t but you could follow the principles

BashfulClam · 31/12/2021 22:55

I never get hangovers, alcohol makes me ravenous so i always eat something carby. Have water and paracetamol as soon as you wake up followed by something with salt.
