Best alcohol for no hangover

Best alcohol for no hangover? At a function at the weekend, long day, would like to have a few drinks but terrified of a hangover. Any tips?

I can drink vodka as much as I like and no hangover, but one sniff of gin or rum and I am done for.

Jota67 · 31/12/2021 10:35

If I drink Prosecco ( around 1 to 1. 5 bottles) I have zero hangover.

Vodka is also good provided you don't go overboard. I usually mix with lemonade and lime.

Normal white wine floors me the next day as too strong and gives me awful headache.

Omicrone · 31/12/2021 10:40

I find anything very sugary gives me a horrible hangover - so anything with sugary mixers, wine, Prosecco etc. I remember going on a few nights out when pregnant and drinking coke all night and still feeling slightly hungover the next day and that's when I realised the sugar must have an effect as well!

I find drinking beer is best for me, I think it's because there is a lot of fluid in there as well so I don't get as dehydrated or something. Clear spirits are OK as well, as long as they are well diluted and with non sugary mixers. It's a but of a science really thinking about it!

If you are drinking gin or vodka, make sure you're ordering or pouring your own, otherwise you might end up with double measures.
When asked my the barman if it's a double lots of people will automatically say Yes, especially on new year's eve.

And water throughout the evening is really key. We're going to a house party and I've bought gin in a tin so I know it's pre measured and I don't get carried away pouring my own as the night goes on.

FrankiesCheeseTruckle · 31/12/2021 10:43

Dioralyte is your friend.
I'll have one before bed and mix one ready to drink during the night. As well as a couple of paracetamol or ibuprofen.
Occasionally I've had one during an evening of drinking too (I'm not an alcoholic honest!)

Works a treat for me.

Drink single white spirits. Personality I go vodka with either tonic or orange juice. A single 25ml measure is one unit of alcohol which takes the average person’s body an hour to break down. If you drink slowly and don’t go too much over the unit per hour then you should be hangover free.

Some people can tolerate much more but considering your question I’m presuming you aren’t used to consuming much alcohol?

SaintVal · 31/12/2021 10:48

Definitely a single measure of a clear spirit like gin or vodka and the whole bottle of mixer. I can't drink white wine anymore - I have blackouts with it, get drunk too quickly and the worst headache the next day.

Angrymum22 · 31/12/2021 10:55

Any white spirit or organic Prosecco. I have a mild allergy to something in white wine but found organic Prosecco is fine.
I can drink decent red wine but not the cheap stuff so I steer clear of mulled wine.
I’m on taxi duty tonight, DS17 has a wild party to go to. We are having a NYE date in our living room a deux, I’m thinking about a sushi platter and some non alcoholic champagne from Waitrose🤣

@Kittykat93

I know everyone says to alternate each alcoholic drink with water and I'm sure it would help yes, but when you are out for a few drinks it's just not something most people think of doing! When someone asks what I want from the bar I'm going to say another wine, not a glass of tap water 🤣
Good point .Could you ask for another wine and a glass of tap water ?
Magnited · 31/12/2021 11:05

Organic wine, about 12%.

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 31/12/2021 11:09

Good quality alcohol, no house or paint stripper crap.
Smirnoff and I'm horrendous the next day.
Absolute, grey goose or stoli and I'm fine.
Same goes for gin and rum.

XiCi · 31/12/2021 11:09

Clear spirits and the best quality you can find i.e not tolstoy/red square vodka or supermarket basics gin.

Beamur · 31/12/2021 11:11

Champagne or clear spirits heavily diluted with juice/mixers.
No more than 2 and you'll be fine

DragonMamma · 31/12/2021 11:16

All I can recommend is having a litre of water next to your bed and pop 2 sachets of diarolyte in it with 2 dissolvable milk thistle tablets and a few ibuprofen to hand

The combination of the above means I never feel too bad.

You can get milk thistle from H&B

Handsnotwands · 31/12/2021 11:16

For me the absolute key is to stick to one thing. Do. Not. Mix. Not even one G&T to start followed by wine.

LaBellina · 31/12/2021 11:20

Vodka for me. Without any doubt. Even after drinking half a bottle one night, I had no real hangover the next morning.

Red wine on the other hand, is a real PITA. As is beer. Mixing drinks is the worst.
I would HIGHLY recommend anyone to stay well clear of mixing caipirinhas and red wine. I wanted to die the next day.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 31/12/2021 12:09

None. Just don't drink.

rainrainraincamedowndowndown · 31/12/2021 12:13

I think just be sensible and don't over do it? I drink regularly, drunk quite a lot when younger but never experienced hang over.

gamerchick · 31/12/2021 12:15

Just pace yourself. I mix a berocca and have one half way through the night. Once I reach that nice buzz stage I go on to zero alcohols. So by the time I get to bed the buzz has worn off.

Then another berocca in the morning.

Hoppinggreen · 31/12/2021 12:15

I suffer so badly with hangovers that I rarely drink but I did drink quite a lot of red wine a few weeks ago with no ill effects. It was organic which I think is what made the difference

Planesmistakenforstars · 31/12/2021 12:16

Ethanol is ethanol, so anyone recommending specific brands of spirits are mostly talking crap. That said, there are some rums which are "dosed" (added sugar) and some tequila which is known as "mixto" which isn't 100% tequila, but has sugar spirit added to it (perfectly legal.) There is some evidence that sugar alongside alcohol worsens the affect of a hangover, so best to avoid it. For tequila, go with a brand which states 100% agave on the label. All spiced rum and many dark rums have added sugar, so avoid that. Also, cogeners usually lead to a worse hangover, and those are present in larger amounts in darker spirits. Your best bet is to drink clear spirits (vodka, gin, white rum) and low or non-sugary mixer.

Nosnowthisyear · 31/12/2021 12:16

No wine! I prefer a short strong drink as you don’t need much to feel the effects.

MintyGreenDream · 31/12/2021 12:23

Drink early on,stop when your pissed ideally before 9pm then drink water then eat.ive got it down to a fine artSmile

CurryLover55 · 31/12/2021 12:26

Definitely don’t have red wine or brandy!

BocolateChiscuits · 31/12/2021 12:49

I gave up drinking for pregnancy and didn't bother taking it up again as all that being drunk and getting tired or having a hangover just seemed a bunch of hassle.

Alcohol free drinks are amazing. Nearly every pub has at least one alcohol free beer, and when you drink it you get a slight placebo effect, so you feel tipsy. Plus you don't stand out against the people around you - they may not notice, especially when they've had a few.

Also know a lady who orders squash (lime, blackcurrant) in wine glasses. People often have no idea she's not drinking.

Sort of a sad comment on our society that people are keeping their alcohol free status under wraps, but hey.
