Habit stacking - does anyone want to join me?

I've been reading about habit stacking - I need a life shake up and think this might help.

I think a habit a week might be more realistic for me than adding another every day though!

I think 1, 2 and 3 for me will be

Washing my face every night and applying night cream (i buy it but always forget. I tend to shower in the mornings and am lazy at bedtime)

8000+ steps a day. I really struggle to fit in 10k. Need to find a reliable way if measuring. I've bought a couple of cheap watch counters but I mustn't swing my arms enough to register!

Open the bedroom window daily

Does anyone want to join me?

I did none of them today - DD5 and I went out at 10am, and didn’t come home till 5pm! Made dinner, bathed and have just put her to bed.

I’d like everywhere to feel the same as you, @SocialConnection - I’m about 1/4 of the way through packing the house to move which doesn’t help!

How does habit stacking work exactly? I was thinking about trying a new habit every week. At the moment I'm not looking at my phone / leaving it upstairs for an hour when I get out of bed - sounds like not a big deal but I use my phone all the time, especially when trying to wake up in the morning when I should just get going.

@DollyPartBaked the first stuff I read about it talked about starting a new habit every day and stacking them on top of each other

No way would I do that!

Newer stuff says to stack a new habit onto things you already do

Mine: after I go for my bedtime wee I will wash my face

After I get out of bed I will open the window

Put after / before / while in front of whatever you want to do to link to something that's already a habit

@Workyticket oh right that does make sense.

OK so my initial ones will be:

  1. After I get up, I'll leave my phone out of the way
  1. After dinner I'll put my phone down for an hour

@SocialConnection I feel like you too.

I crave a tidy home but dh has a habit of starting DIY and not finishing so the place always looks a tip.

I regularly clear out and have just done the kitchen cupboards, ds' toys and mine and his drawers. I don't drive though and dh is crap at taking stuff to the charity shop and tip so there's endless bags of stuff in our bedroom to go.

Dh is great in other ways - he just doesn't feel the need not to have crap lying around

I regularly

I've just done a 10 minute tidy up in my bedroom - there is still a lot to do but I can see the difference the 10 minutes has made (folding clothes has given me a tiny bit more space, dumping ancient skin cream i won't use has made it less cluttered. Getting rid of the bags of rubbish has made me feel like a weight is off my shoulders).

Keeping up with TOMM. Need to do my living room clean this evening.

My next habit has been to get fresh air every day. Really didn't want to go today but i've done it. I've joined the C25k thread and planned to do run 1 today but i've had terrible stomach cramps all day so felt a walk would be better. Taking DS for a long scenic walk tomorrow before back to school for us all. It will be challenging for me to keep this habit up once I get back to work.

Great thread.

I've stated with 6 and going to build up from here

I'm using an app to keep track of doing each habit every day

Oh this looks good! What's the name of the app please?

As always I get a bit excited about throwing a million new good habits at this and then start to wane very quickly.

But, my water intake has stayed, opening the windows and washing and moisturising my face at night. So I'm going to let these embed in before I try to add anything else .

TakeMeToYourLiar · 04/01/2022 21:26

@sofakingcool it's called streak

I'm doing yoga with Adriene 30 day journey, started a couple of days ago and been going ok so far.
Also drinking water.. I fill a jug at the start of the day and keep drinking from it, refill at lunchtime.

I've got an oddbox veg delivery arriving tomorrow and I'll be doing some meal planning in the evening (every Wednesday) then just do an ocado order for the bits I actually need.

I made a monthly budget and signed up to Monzo so I'm tracking my spending now. Mainly so that I can go on a VERY expensive course in May and yet still remain with budget while also putting aside money for a house deposit.

Radio 4 goes on while making breakfast so that I'm not completely oblivious to the world. Trying to get in a daily walk, even if it's just a quick spin round the block.

I've started opening my bedroom window in the morning just because everyone in this thread has been talking about it!

Breathmiller · 05/01/2022 14:43

Water habit is sticking. As has washing and moisturising at bed time.
I've not been sticking to TOMM as much but we are having work done (dh putting up coving as we speak) so the house is a bit in disarray. But, cleaning tge bathroom every day has stuck. Sink and toilet and one or two other things as they look like they need done.

Also opening the windows. Seems such a small thing but it makes such a difference to the house and my mood. And so quick and easy to do. Although I have noticed DH goes around shutting them behind me.

Tinseltrauma · 06/01/2022 15:53

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie four days into the nail oil and I can already see a difference! Thank you .
