Habit stacking - does anyone want to join me?

I've been reading about habit stacking - I need a life shake up and think this might help.

I think a habit a week might be more realistic for me than adding another every day though!

I think 1, 2 and 3 for me will be

Washing my face every night and applying night cream (i buy it but always forget. I tend to shower in the mornings and am lazy at bedtime)

8000+ steps a day. I really struggle to fit in 10k. Need to find a reliable way if measuring. I've bought a couple of cheap watch counters but I mustn't swing my arms enough to register!

Open the bedroom window daily

Does anyone want to join me?

I've recently increased my facial cleansing routine - mainly due to wanting to stop using single use things ie face wipes. So now I use a bamboo flannel and face wash and because that's quite drying on my skin I apply cream morning and night - Olay 7 something at night and a Elemis brightening moisturiser in the morning.

Going forward id like to improve my water intake - drinking of any kind is very poor for me, leaving me often with a horrible headache by teatime Sad

I'd also like to find something like Yoga on YouTube which I am do at least a few times a week.

@ParishSpinster

I've been a little dubious about audible and audio books but only because I'm not sure if they have been abridged or not. I want to hear the whole book - does audible abridge?

I really like listening to a podcast on my daily walk, listening to a book would be awesome!

Most are full, I think they would say if abridged. Lots of the classics are free - currently listening to the works of Charlotte Bronte. Mainly to break myself from a bad sci-fi/fantasy genre habit that was actually stopping me going to sleep. Tip - don't play exciting stuff at night!

Have you thought about just using the cloth and water, if the face wash is drying? I only use water now and hardly feel the need to moisturise whereas before when I used face wash my skin felt so tight afterwards.
sofakingcool · 31/12/2021 21:37

@Twillow , I have tried that as the bamboo cloth is designed to be used without any product, but I found that even more drying! I keep trying different face washes hoping I'll find one in the end

Oh I'll have a look! Thanks @Workyticket

sofakingcool · 31/12/2021 23:03

Sorry me again worky, is it the foaming or hydrating Cerave you recommend? I've just been looking on Amazon.

Great thread. Definitely going to start with this.

A few people are saying about nail oil? Which/what is that please? Is there an actual type people use? Nail oil new to me! Thanks.

Mine will be...
1, Properly clean & moisturise face morning/evening.
2, Drink more water.
3, 10,000 steps a day...

BitcherOfBlakiven · 01/01/2022 08:32

I’m using Habitica. I have ADHD and it comes highly recommended.

My 3 are -

  • Eat something healthy
  • Stack dishwasher as I go
  • Put laundry away as I go

I'm really curious about this. There are a few things I could definitely do with making a habit, rather than an on-off thing when I remember.

Any ideas for good apps for this? I've signed up for the 7-day trial of Fabulous but there is far too much going on - all those graphics and animations and motivational philosophical stuff that I just want to skip. I'd rather have something simpler but still with features that hold me to account!

Tinseltrauma · 01/01/2022 10:11

I'm interested in the nail oil too! My nails only get to a certain length before they split and break off so I'd like to get them stronger. Already take multivitamins. I currently have strengthener painted on my nails , I guess I would need to remove this before any nail oil application?

Workyticket · 01/01/2022 13:23

I had too much prosecco and forgot to wash and moisturise last night!

Double cleansed this morning and the windows are open!

Op I always open windows I'm astonished in small rooms how quickly they become stuffy I don't think it's an issue for larger rooms.

Esp modern houses with not a single air gap anywhere, get windows open!

I've never heard of this op but I think I have some some unwittingly before with cream and also speficic eye cream to go in the creases below and around the eye.

I keep moisteriser by the bed to do it afterwards a shower.

ABitOfAShitShow · 01/01/2022 14:44

I’m going to —try to— join in. My ADHD makes habit forming challenging. I don’t know what habits I will stack yet so I’ll have to have a think…

SocialConnection · 01/01/2022 15:16

Great idea!! I've always been rubbish at housework but Saturday mornings I routinely shower etc, clean bathroom, put out fresh towels and wash last week's. It's a little ritual I actually like!

So I'm going to make more effort to add in a Sunday routine of strip bed, dust & hoover & tidy bedroom, fresh bed linen. At the moment it's only done when it occurs to me and I'd like to embed that as a habit.

Another habit I really must work on is dealing with paperwork regularly so things don't pile up and become frightening.

Teeth, skin, water etc are all long-time habitual.

Breathmiller · 01/01/2022 15:18

I remembered to wash and moisturise last night and also squated while I did my teeth.

The timed water bottle is proving a great buy and I am making my 2 litres easily. I'm at 6pm on it already. It's so handy.

Also manged a walk both days and opened windows. And ticked off TOMM today and yesterday.

I quite often put the nail oil on top of strengthener.
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/01/2022 16:10

This is the oil I've got.

Tinseltrauma · 02/01/2022 09:37

Thanks @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie . It does actually say in the product details to apply over enamel as well so that's perfect. Off to Boots today!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/01/2022 10:21

Hope you like it @Tinseltrauma It definitely helps my horrible nails, when I remember to use it!

BreakingUpWithMyPhone · 02/01/2022 10:26

I'm reading How to break up with your phone by Catherine Price (hence my username 🤣).

I need to do this, and the book seems really good so far - the first half is about how rubbish smartphones are for you (no shit Sherlock), and the second half is a 30 day plan to break up with yours 🙈...

ParishSpinster · 02/01/2022 11:37

I've just put on 30 minute timers on my social media apps (Facebook and instagram) and 90 minutes for Internet. Will see what I do now I've used it up Grin hopefully read. Might have to talk to DH.

KrispyBrussels · 02/01/2022 11:42

I have a diary with moon phases. My plan for my crafting this year was to start with the new moon and finally get to finishing stuff in the waning.
Does that sound right?! Because I made it up 😂 to give me a prompt to FINISH stuff.

SocialConnection · 02/01/2022 17:41

What I'd love is to feel my home is clean & tidy in general, not obsessive, but looking & smelling nice.

I want to do one room / area a day as a quick streamlined routine that is just an easy habit that fits in with life.

Well, I've managed the Saturday bathroom routine and half the Sunday bedroom routine - tidied up, and changed & washed all bedclothes, didn't get round to dust & hoover. I'll pick that up tomorrow.

I am very easily distra - ooh look, that thread I've been following has some new posts ...
