What has happened to Boots No 7?

I bulk buy their Stay perfect compact foundation, Flawless pressed powder and Stay perfect concealer and am about to run out.

I have used them for years and it was by far the best budget range foundation for my skin.
Great range of colours, lovely creamy foundation - perfect for my skin.

I went to buy more and No 7 have redesigned everything.

The packaging is so awful, cheap, tacky and screams true ‘budget makeup’.
It used to be all black (like Chanel 😀)

The ‘Medium’ pressed powder I have used forever is now orange and doesn’t come with a pad to apply it, the foundation compact I have relied on for years is ‘not available in store’.
I daren’t order it without seeing it first in case the colour has been changed too.

Has anyone else noticed?

Why do companies mess with products that have been brilliant for so many years?

Can anyone recommend an alternative?

I can’t say re. Cool beige Stay perfect compact foundation because it’s out of stock and I haven’t been able to buy it but the medium pressed powder is now bright orange 🍊

Totally agree. They’ve discontinued my shade in the Stay Perfect Foundation. When they used their ‘matching machine’ to try and re-match though it still came up with my original shade! She found a slightly different shade so will see how I get on with it.
Really dislike the packaging, looks cheaper.

I can only complain about an eyebrow pencil from No.7 tbh. They used to do a dark grey (ideal for those of us with sparse black eyebrows but black pencil looks far too harsh). It went waxy and then I couldn't get it at all. I miss it.

No 7 used to be great - good quality, and not expensive. Then Boots started giving away those "£5 off No 7" vouchers, which was lovely for a while, because you could get very very cheap make-up ... and then they started pushing up the price, and it went up and up and up, to the point where it became a rip-off.

I found a Natural Collection stand in Boots yesterday - I didn't realise that still existed. It was a sad, pale shadow of its former self, though.

jassixa · 16/12/2021 10:37

Yes all the colours have changed now to either too orange or too grey. I couldn’t believe it when I saw the range in store.

MrsMcCluskeysCat · 16/12/2021 10:44

Crap I'm going to have to give this foundation a go over lunchtime because if it has changed I will need to find a new one by this weekend!

YouGotThisKeepGoing · 16/12/2021 10:46

There’s a no7 standalone website now. Are they going for building their own brand identity away from Boots?

YouLando · 16/12/2021 10:48

Oh no! I have used the waterproof mascara and pressed powder for years. I had to get a new mascara recently, hate the packaging and took me ages to find the right one.

I'll be really annoyed if I can't get a Fair pressed powder.

I have to add talc to the loose powder to make it less orange. On the plus side it's lasting a loooong time

Well here you go... Here’s what has happened (and who is to blame!).

This is who owns Boots No 7 now.
It’s basically a different product.

@MaryHingey yes, colours have changed, some of the names have stayed the same but the colours are slightly different to before (even though they say they aren’t)

Oh bugger, thats really deceitful keeping the same names when they have changed the colours
I would have bought my old make for the same price instead if I'd have known
I'm cross now!

Viviennemary · 17/12/2021 11:14

I have a jar of no 7 protect and perfect day cream. I was amazed how good it was for a cheaper brand. Went to get another jar. Its all changed. So had to buy a different one which isnt as good.

MrsMcCluskeysCat · 17/12/2021 11:17

I've just put a little bit on my hand from the new bottle I have as well as the old bottle, it was hard to tell if it was slightly different or if it was my imagination as I was looking for a difference! I will have to see what the new one is like when I use it on my full face tomorrow.

For anyone interest that was the Hudraluminous foundation in Calico.

IAAP · 17/12/2021 11:17

I totally stopped buying make up for this reason as well as the cost -bloody men don't do it or aren't expected to do it.

I remember my feminist mother telling me to put a 'bit of make on to look better' she didn't say that to my brother

janicewheeler · 17/12/2021 11:19

Oh god. I've asked my mom for 'beautifully matte' foundation for Xmas and now worried it's Gona be shit ! Haven't brought any for nearly a year due to bad acne

Foolsrule · 17/12/2021 11:56

Gutted. Have used their foundation for the last couple of years after using the colour match machine in store. Why? Just why?!

Iheartmysmart · 17/12/2021 12:08

I went up to Boots last night to get another Stay Perfect foundation in Calico which I’ve used for years only to find the tester was a horrible shade of orange and nothing like my old one. So annoying.

Mrsblobbyspants · 17/12/2021 12:18

I agree. Went to get No7 medium powder this week. Took one look at horrible packaging and orange shade and have been looking for an alternative since. Am watching thread for inspiration.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 17/12/2021 12:27

Oh fucksocks. I don’t use foundation all the time, but the hydra luminous one is the only one I’ve found that will actually work on my skin. I’m about to run out, so may have to trawl the local smaller Boots stores to see if I can find a tube of the old stuff.

I haven’t the energy to find another type in my budget.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 17/12/2021 12:29

I've just gone on to ebay and bought 3 stay perfect foundations in the old formulation.

HelloCovid · 17/12/2021 12:35

Are there any other hypoallergenic ranges in that price range now? Almay used to be good

JuergenSchwarzwald · 17/12/2021 12:39

I use their Stayperfect mascara because it doesn't irritate my eyes and cause green gunge. I hope they've not changed that too.

Companies say they change formulations if laws change regarding what they can and can't use, or if they can't get certain ingredients anymore.

There has been a lot of disquiet about changes to the Liz Earle range (same owners as Boots) and their argument is that people have asked them to reduce their use of certain preservatives, so they have. But they've spoilt some of their long-standing products like Skin Repair.

I think it's all about money-saving most of the time.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 17/12/2021 12:40

Ditto things like Quality Street. It was fine. They sell millions of tubs every year so why do they have to fiddle about the chocolates inside?
