Side dishes to go with gammon

Juturna · 14/12/2021 20:17

I’m cooking gammon (for the first time!) at the weekend for a family dinner, but I can’t decide on the best side dishes to serve with it.

I’m looking for inspiration, please Smile

TIA

I’ve been a veggie for many years but still remember fondly my aunties creamy sweetcorn with the gammon. Sweetcorn in cheese sauce. Sounds bad but honestly so good!

DelurkingAJ · 14/12/2021 21:57

We do creamed sweet corn, which I guess is a close relation to cauliflower cheese, potato wedges and green salad with cold gammon on Boxing Day. Bliss!

Cauliflower cheese and hassleback potatoes

Another vote for red cabbage
Lots of buttery mash, with mustard in it.

MrsFin · 14/12/2021 22:05

Cabbage. And mashed potato

orderlyfashion · 14/12/2021 22:17

Chipotle mayonnaise and sweet potato wedges

Zebra100 · 14/12/2021 23:05

Peasepudding!

Palavah · 14/12/2021 23:11

Sauekraut
Dauphinoise
Savoy cabbage
Peas

WildRosie · 15/12/2021 00:40

Parmesan potatoes, carrots, broccoli and Cumberland sauce. Jugs of cold water on the table too as gammon can be quite salty.

ODFOgrinch · 15/12/2021 01:02

@viques

I would go for spiced red cabbage and good mash.
What Viques said. Or chips and pickles. Or mash, greens and parsley sauce . But red cabbage and gammon is the best of all.

I’m not sure posting was such a good idea, after all! I was sadly lacking in inspiration, but now I’m spoilt for choice!

Thanks, All

Parsley sauce, not cheese sauce.

NinaProudman2022 · 15/12/2021 08:05

Cauliflower cheese and red cabbage and potatoes.

Or with potatoes, greens and Cumberland Sauce.

NinaProudman2022 · 15/12/2021 08:07

For the potatoes you could do dauphinois, cubed, hassleback, mash, roast just whichever you fancy.

emmathedilemma · 15/12/2021 09:52

and then the leftovers cold with salad, chips and coleslaw

yoshiblue · 15/12/2021 11:46

Definitely cauliflower cheese and pickled red cabbage. Potato wise it should be mash, but I don't like it so do jacket potatoes instead.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/12/2021 12:06

I don’t much like red cabbage, except raw in a salad/coleslaw.
The other night I did gammon with parsley sauce, lots of mash, plus sugar snap peas and tender stem broccoli.

If I hadn’t had a gluten free guest (parsley sauce made with cornflour) I might have made cauliflower cheese - or cauliflower/broccoli cheese, but it just wouldn’t be the same with cornflour.

nodogz · 15/12/2021 12:13

Roast potatoes
Cauliflower cheese
Green beans/broccoli
Piccalilli

Perfection!

CrimbleCrumble1 · 15/12/2021 12:15

I like pineapple and rice.

IknowwhatIneed · 15/12/2021 12:19

Dauphinois potatoes and green beans in our house.

EmmaStone · 15/12/2021 12:24

We do a weird combo in our house (gammon is our Xmas Eve meal). 1 child won't eat the gammon or mashed potato (the other loves it), one won't eat macaroni cheese (the other loves it).

So we have gammon, mash, macaroni cheese and some kind of veg (red cabbage or greens of some sort).

I also make cauli cheese at the same time for Xmas Day.

gogohm · 15/12/2021 12:40

Red cabbage

Marmite27 · 15/12/2021 12:43

Gammon steaks fried / grilled get served with jacket wedges, peas and salad.

Gammon joint slow cooked get new potatoes, peas and cabbage (red or sweetheart usually).

AdaColeman · 15/12/2021 12:49
