How many meatballs do you serve per person?

117 replies

Tessellation · 02/12/2021 19:12

DC think they should have 6 meatballs per person. I think 3 is sufficient. DH says the number is 5.

I usually try to make mine but when I buy them they come in packs of 12 - what does that mean? 12 for a family of 4?

How many do you serve?

I got it @ShirleyPhallus. I then had the double treat of watching the outrage safe in the knowledge that you were totally taking the piss 🙌🏻

greenlynx · 02/12/2021 19:50

I use 250g pack of turkey mince for meatballs for 3 of us, it’s sufficient amount but not too much. I would rather cut pasta.

@ShirleyPhallus

My god the greed on this thread!! Shock 2 for an adult and 1 for a child is absolutely sufficient, especially when served with 8-10 grams of pasta and a massive salad

No wonder there is an obesity crisis

1 meatball out of a packet of 12 that would generally be served in a supermarket? I don’t think that would feed even a small child with pasta.

Me and DH would have 6 if it was a packet of 12 but we could easily have 4 if DS was also having it for his dinner.

I am not overweight and never have been but I don’t snack during meals and don’t eat a big lunch so I like to have a substantial dinner

ShirleyPhallus · 02/12/2021 19:56

@ErrolTheDragon

I got it, Shirley. You didn't get that I got it. Sad

Grin

So sorry @ErrolTheDragon, it’s all getting a bit meta isn’t it. Meatball meta

Hurrah also for @mynameiscalypso

Hopefullywaiting01234 · 02/12/2021 19:56

Sold not served

Tessellation · 02/12/2021 20:01

@ShirleyPhallus in fact I was cautiously suspicious until the words "massive salad" Grin

I cut them in half and reroll them! 12 then becomes 24 which is 6 each. Or 8 if DD only wants spaghetti and sauce which she does about 50% of the time

mummatomason · 02/12/2021 20:03

So i get a pack of 12
2 for ds whose 3
And 5 each for me and dp

OliviaKeeling · 02/12/2021 20:04

Ikea meatball portion is 8 or 12 delicious meatballs with mash, cream sauce and lingonberry jam... 😋

BertieBotts · 02/12/2021 20:05

@Toddlerteaplease

I thought 12 was a normal portion. That's what IKEA serve in their cafe.
This. Three?! What's the point?
ImFree2doasiwant · 02/12/2021 20:05

@ShirleyPhallus it made me laugh, not as much as the outraged responses.

I think I could eat 6 but am a bit fat. 2 DC (4 and 6) would happily eat 3 . So that's the pack of 12. Though they freeze well, not sure I'd bother freezing 1 or 2.

Horst · 02/12/2021 20:09

So I tested this. I gave my near teen 5 he didn’t eat them all I gave him 4 he didn’t eat them all 3 seems to be the golden number but can be less with more pasta and sauce. My daughter however would rather 10 meatballs and no pasta Grin

Tessellation · 02/12/2021 20:15

@Horst Grin

Ok just to clarify I do not actually give my family 3 meatballs each, I give them however many they want, it's just seeing the packs made me wonder what others did and whether I was being unrealistic. Which clearly I am. And that's ok!

But do you all make or buy your meatballs? Two packs for one meal feels a bit expensive no?

I got it too, and was getting very confused by all the people who seemed to think Shirley was being serious.

A pack of 24 is likely to be less than 2x12

Horst · 02/12/2021 20:23

Sometimes I make my own sometimes I buy them. I wouldn’t it two packs though I’d bulk it out with veg or salad on the side.

Tessellation · 02/12/2021 20:26

@ErrolTheDragon ah I didn't realise they did packs of 24. Yes that would make sense!!

OP posts:
BertieBotts · 02/12/2021 20:28

Why, how much is a pack?

ErrolTheDragon · 02/12/2021 20:30

If you get 24, each of you can be allocated 6, and if you choose not to eat them for dinner then you're entitled to first dibs on a meatball sarnie the next day.

Squizzley · 02/12/2021 20:33

Packs of 12 are £2 in Sainsbury’s, just googled. Or £3 for bigger one. I couldn’t think of anything worse really as we don’t eat meat but I don’t see the cost as prohibitive for two packs?

Didn't take long at all for the massive MN salad to make an appearance. So predictable.

I have 4 meatballs and no salad. I'm not overweight.

grapewine · 02/12/2021 20:41

And now I see it was deliberate MN bingo. Fair enough!

..

Megan2018 · 02/12/2021 20:44

We have 12 between DH, me and toddler DD. So that’s 4-5 each for us and 2-3 for DD. But when it was just us 2 we ate 6 each.

But the ones we often get come in 16’s, then it’s 8 each for adults and 4 for DD and a spare portion for her. They are slightly smaller but the portion is better.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/12/2021 20:46

I've just realised my dinner tonight, courtesy of DH, actually was a 'massive salad', with two sausages on it. HmmGrin
In line with previous recommendation, I'm saving my third sausage for a sarnie tomorrow. Cheese, soss and red onion marmalade toastie.
