What is your absolute favourite hot chocolate to make at home and with no specialist equipment (I.e. velvetiser)?

Want to get a lovely one to have with amaretto at the weekend

Galaxy hot chocolate powder with full fat milk, squirty cream and choccie sprinkles.
Got into a terrible habit of having one most days during this cold snap!

Twinnings for me too and the dolce gusto choco chino. I’ve ordered some Black Forest gateaux syrup to try to recreate the Costa seasonal hot chocolate.

Spoon of Nutella melted into a pan of warm milk and dare I say it..... single cream 🐽

Green and Blacks hot choc (the cocoa is nice too). Twinnings made feel sick.

Another vote for Charbonnel & Walker - it's basically grated chocolate but somehow when I grate my own it just doesn't taste the same. Waitrose sell it so it's not too difficult to get hold of. I used to think it was expensive (£5 for 300g) but then I realised what Whittards and hotel chocolat charge for theirs!

Asda Finest. It's so much better than other brands I've tried as it is just cocoa and sugar so basically now I'd make it but premixed. Most other brands have all sorts of other ingredients. The pure chocolate stuff is still thin and kind of greasy. Just make it as per instructions for kids.

But for me I put the powder in a dry saucepan, add a spoonful of cornflour and whisk it all together. Gradually add cold milk, whisking all the while til it's smooth. Then heat up and you get velvety, slightly thick hot chocolate. It's divine. None of this sweet brown water that most hot chocolate is.

Ciobar. It’s Italian but you can buy it online. It’s a powder you add to a pan of warm milk. It becomes really thick and so chocolate. Really good for a run / whiskey! So worth the money!

We've tried a great many, this is THE BEST!
I think there is a 20% off code for new customers :)

Another vote for the hot chocolate shaker, and I like the 61% dark drops. The best non-cafe hot chocolate by a long way, plus the shaker is fun and appeals to the scientist in me Smile

Cocoa

Passthecake30 · 29/11/2021 22:45

Green and blacks for me too, the rest are too sickly sweet.

NalPolishRemover · 29/11/2021 22:56

Hotel chocolat (in the velvetizer)
Dd also liked the stirrers & we get butlers

Malteser71 · 30/11/2021 17:42

I agree about the Simon Coll Spanish one. Also have a soft spot for Charbonnel because I used to buy it in John Lewis when I was a poor student.

BeefSupreme · 30/11/2021 17:47

Whittards do the best hot chocolate

lisaandalan · 30/11/2021 17:50

Hotel chocolat
Black Forest. X

Coviddy · 30/11/2021 17:57

Either pure chocolate shavings or Tesco finest - it's just cocoa and sugar!

All the others have absolute shite in them - milk powders, thickeners, starch. I think Lindt has potato starch in it! I think I also said this on the other thread. Even Charbonnel e walker has crap in it. Gross.
