What is your absolute favourite hot chocolate to make at home and with no specialist equipment (I.e. velvetiser)?

Want to get a lovely one to have with amaretto at the weekend

The best hot chocolate I've ever had was from a cafe in Lisbon that we visited every year for 5 years. I still talk about it. Literal 'stand a spoon up in it' kind of hot chocolate, which the one in that link promises... going to have to try it!

Simon Coll - the bar version - it’s Spanish hot chocolate and thick and delicious.

JollyHolly30 · 29/11/2021 20:24

Although the wording from the description makes me so annoyed. Just shows how desperate I am to recreate those memories!

'One of the most THICKEST and absolutely DELICIOUS hot chocolate drinks once only available to cafes and restaurants is now ...'

A friend of a friend set up his own hot chocolate business pipschocolate.com/product/bw-rhcc/ . He sells "coins" or crumbled chocolate in a whole variety of flavours as well as vegan friendly ones. He sells on Amazon as well as his own site, and they're stocked by some cafes here in Cardiff

Miles Heavenly Hot Chocolate.

It’s a West Country brand n in local shops n tesco you just need to mix the powder with a bit of milk n pour hot water.
If you’ve ever had a great hot choc in north Devon or Somerset it’s Miles the absolute best ever

Oatly chocolate milk warmed up is the best. Very recent and welcome addition in our house.

CapBarnacles · 29/11/2021 20:28

Hotel Chocolat dark, made on the hob, not the velvetiser!

NotMyCat · 29/11/2021 20:29

Agree with Spanish hot chocolate

SingingSands · 29/11/2021 20:30

What's the Irish one... does it begin with "B"? My mind has gone totally blank!

JulesJules · 29/11/2021 20:32

I make batches of this Jamie Oliver hot chocolate mix in a big Kilner jar. (I put more chocolate in than the recipe, and I use dark choc chips as it's easier. Also add a good pinch of salt) Have given it as presents in smaller jars with a small bag of mini marshmallows to go with it.

If you can find it, Frys make one now and it's amazing. It's milk free like their chocolate, and we make it with oat milk, it's the best.

Tiredmumno1 · 29/11/2021 20:40

Another vote for Spanish Hot Chocolate, especially if you like it thick (without any snazzy machines Grin)

Classica · 29/11/2021 20:43
it looks like a mug of ganache Grin

I'd be the shape of humpty dumpty if that took up residence in my home.

Butlers. It's delicious.

I also love Charbonnel & Walker.

Green and Black's cocoa powder. Milk, no water. Whisk well. NO SUGAR. I hate sickly hot chocolate.

LHOOQ · 29/11/2021 21:03

I work in a very fancy pants restaurant. We make hot chocolate with dark chocolate buttons and cocoa. The secret is no added sugar and (obviously you don't want to be having this every day), whole milk and double cream, (half and half). I know Shock. I don't drink it, but that is how it is made.

ShakespearesSisters · 29/11/2021 21:12

I like Cadbury. I mix the powder with a bit of cold milk in the bottom of the mug, not quiet fully. It takes a bit though as doesn't dissolve well in cold milk. Top it up and bung it in the microwave and remove it as it just starts to bubble up. It comes out with a lovely chocolaty bubbly topping.

ReginaaPhalange · 29/11/2021 21:17

Lindt without fail for me! In fact im away to make one now!

Best hot chocolate
Zampa · 29/11/2021 21:22

We always stock up on Poulain drinking chocolate when we holiday in France but you can get it on Amazon.

Absolutely hands down the best.

Throughabushbackwards · 29/11/2021 21:43

Classica - you can just about make it as thick as ganache if you put enough in!
