Anyone else have a weird phobia?

I understand why lots of people have phobias of things that are associated with actual risk, pain or things that have left an evolutionary stamp on us due to being poisonous e.g snakes and spiders.

Can anyone tell me why I am paralyzingly scared of empty swimming pools and, most of all, octopus.

Octopus in particular I have a genuinely ridiculous reaction to... If I force myself to watch a video of one within seconds my palms start to sweat and I feel sick rising.... It's almost more like an extreme disgust reaction than fear.

Tell me your bonkers phobias please.

Sloths.
Can’t look at them.
Also bobbles, solid bobbles, clusters of bobbles.

Gumbo · 13/11/2021 13:15

Cardboard egg boxes. Plastic are fine Hmm

@Calicoqueen that's interesting, DS can't cope with velvet either

Wet toilet paper. In fact I can’t even make poached eggs because it resembles it Grin

roarfeckingroarr · 13/11/2021 13:18

Slugs. I get that extreme disgust reaction you have towards octopus OP,

Badabingbadabum · 13/11/2021 13:19

Worms. They make feel feel sick and have to try not to cry when I see one.

roarfeckingroarr · 13/11/2021 13:20

@Bitterbean

Clusters of holes make me feel very upset indeed.
This too. It has a name beginning with a t. Don't want to google for obvious reasons. It's clusters of small holes.
caringcarer · 13/11/2021 13:21

Tortoises, turtles and terrapins. I can't look at any of them. I just wish they were all extinct tbh. I am terrified of them.

DH has a phobia of buttons, especially if they are unattached to something. He was given a birthday card with a button on. It went straight in the bin.

TawdryBrush · 13/11/2021 13:22

When I was a child I was terrified of remote control cars.

I remember a kid in my class brought one into school on the last day of term when you were allowed to bring toys in. When it started moving around on the floor I panicked and started crying my eyes out and had to be taken out of class Blush

I remember feeling really scared but also ashamed because I knew it was a weird thing to be scared of!

Luckily I grew out of that one!

Jobhunterhelp · 13/11/2021 13:23

Small hole hater here too

choirmumoftwo · 13/11/2021 13:32

DD has a knee phobia. She can't bear anyone to touch hers or even to watch other people having theirs touched. Very strange indeed.

Romemarie · 13/11/2021 13:33

Cotton wool especially the balls. they freak me out. Hate the feel of it, makes me cringe.

I also have a phobia of spiders snakes and my main one is clowns. I honestly would rather be shut in a room with a spider than a clown, i literally get panic attacks seeing them on TV. Put me in a room with one I would pass out with fear.

MintyGreenDream · 13/11/2021 13:35

Toads.Fucking awful things.

MintyGreenDream · 13/11/2021 13:36

Oh and I hate the Alpha Romeo number plate position. It makes me go all funny looking at one.

Hellocatshome · 13/11/2021 13:37

Anything that is half in and half out of water. I am fine with shipwrecks, coral reefs anhthing that is totally under water but things that are half in half out like boats or piers or those marked buoy things give me the creeps.

Helpimfalling · 13/11/2021 13:40

My teenage son is scared of....jeans

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 13/11/2021 13:44

Horizontal high rise flats. They look like vertical one that have fallen over and are about to lift them selves up and start walking. Erm ill shut up, shall I 😂

Under ground rail way stations.

Submarines. A mixture of being in a confined space and huge open space at the same time.

Things in water that shouldn't be there and vice versa
Not scared of the following but makes me wince.

Wet cellophane.
Paper straws.
Bent cotton wool buds.
Dry baby wipes.
Wet paper.

Lizlou85 · 13/11/2021 13:46

I have two.
1 - Feet. No one is allowed to touch my feet or put their bare feet anywhere near me. Randomly feet in flip flops don't affect me but I can't let my bare feet touch a floor.
2 - Pinocchio. Any other puppets I'm fine with but i can't go anywhere near a anything Pinocchio related.

mangowithasqueezeoflime · 13/11/2021 14:00

People clipping their nails/ cracking knuckles in public proper fight or flight

People peeing in public fills me with fear and rage

The smell of Swiss cheese or tuna makes me gag

joysmoy66 · 13/11/2021 14:04

My son is scared of sunflowers Confused

Stinkyslippers · 13/11/2021 14:06

Tin foil

I think it stems from being a kid and my parents made a guy Fawkes that they kept in the bath

They told me I was shit scared of it (being only two years old)

Years and years later I asked my dad what it was made out of

‘Well it had straw hair,my old clothes, your grandads old hat,my old gardening gloves and oh yeah,a tin foil face…’

I know we have some in the house even though we don’t use it-my partner brought it with him when we moved in together 5 years ago,but I’m too scared to try to find where he’s hidden it

Just the thought of it freaks me out-before I went nc with my mother she used to buy me chocolate coins every Christmas as she ‘forgot’

Ugh

CruCru · 13/11/2021 14:13

@fluffyatemycake

My husband has a phobia of blu tac and he has no idea why. He can't trace it back to anything but it just terrifies him and its definitely a weird one.
Actually I have this. Also chewing / bubble gum (in mouths), slime (ugh), play doh, bread dough.

I hide it - chewing gum is not allowed because it ends up as white splodges on the pavement, slime gets stuck in the carpet etc.

JachFrost · 13/11/2021 14:20

Lifts, caves, anywhere I feel trapped. Always have to check the lock in a public toilet to make sure it won't jam. Have a suspicion that I'll never go on the tube again too.

Eggsley · 13/11/2021 14:28

Marching bands. I cannot stand them, they make me really panicky. Just sit down and play your instruments, stop walking around.

Clowns. Just nope.
