Anyone else have a weird phobia?

I understand why lots of people have phobias of things that are associated with actual risk, pain or things that have left an evolutionary stamp on us due to being poisonous e.g snakes and spiders.

Can anyone tell me why I am paralyzingly scared of empty swimming pools and, most of all, octopus.

Octopus in particular I have a genuinely ridiculous reaction to... If I force myself to watch a video of one within seconds my palms start to sweat and I feel sick rising.... It's almost more like an extreme disgust reaction than fear.

Tell me your bonkers phobias please.

Drains in the bottom of swimming pools
Chewing gum (not frightened, it’s just SO DISGUSTING!)

wolfstarling · 12/11/2021 23:04

Copper coins and buttons.

XenoBitch · 12/11/2021 23:05

@catfunk

I'm sure I was told years ago that phobia of buttons / coins etc can be a form of OCD
Really? That is interesting. If I can see a rogue button or bead, I have to cover it up, or have someone remove it or I get this weird intrusive thought that it will end up in my cup of tea or something. I know it wont leap in there by itself, but the thought it might becomes all consuming.

@TinaYouFatLard

The underneath of large ships.
Or large ships in general. I hate seeing cruise ships if I am at a beach. Nothing should be that big!
Hen2018 · 12/11/2021 23:06

DC1 - spiders
DC2 - things that are half in and out of water (fence posts and trees in flood water, pier supports and, worst of all, buoys!)

The underneath of large ships.
Yes, yes.

And....submarines, they look so weird and creepy

Anordinarymum · 12/11/2021 23:07

Seeds
Holes
Seeds in holes. Even the thought of them makes me creep.
Belly buttons that go in and fluff in them
Melons (because of the seeds)
Squash/ pumpkins etc (because of the seeds)
I can eat bread with seeds in if I do not look. If I do look I end up picking all the seeds out and get freaked by it.
I have always been like this

@SadSongsAndWaltzes

Baked beans. Especially cold ones, and even worse, stray ones in the plug hole after the washing up.

I'm much better now and can cook them for the kids, but when I first got with my husband I couldn't go near him if he was eating or had recently eaten them and couldn't wash up anything that had touched them.

Oh god thank you! They make me shudder 🤮 If I go out for a cooked breakfast I always ask for NO BEANS. My breakfast always fucking appears with beans on it and I have to go through the rigmarole of sending the plate back Angry

Mine is inland water. Luckily I live on an island and we only have a reservoir and I give that a very wide berth.

Gruffalogrinch · 12/11/2021 23:10

I don’t know if these are classed as phobias, but they definitely give me the boak; crumbs (sinister fuckers) butter/jam on the worktop and Other People’s Fridges - the smell 🤮. I can just about tolerate the smell of my own fridge. Also cleaning out lunchboxes. Anyone sensing a theme here? 🤣

Allthehotchocolate · 12/11/2021 23:14

@HangingOver I have a phobia of empty swimming pools too!! Empty of water and also if they're empty of people. So horrid

Fckingfuming · 12/11/2021 23:18

@unicornpower you'd hate my house!. My DD woke to one of her snakes sharting in its enclosure the other night and had to get up to clean it out, the stench and noise was terrible 🤣

Holothane · 12/11/2021 23:23

Balloons pretty when hung up but squeaking piping or someone blowing up I run.

IndigoApple · 12/11/2021 23:25

Mine is photos of people (or animals) with their tongues sticking out. Also more a revulsion than a fear.

Gingernaut · 12/11/2021 23:27

Crowds, mobs, opticians and heights.

Hugoslavia · 12/11/2021 23:27

@TinaYouFatLard

Oh god, don't go there. I can barely think about them. Submerged ships are even worse though. And submerged objects generally such as pier legs etc.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 12/11/2021 23:29

Fictional ghosts.
But not real ones.

Tell me I'm in a "haunted house" no fear. Ghosts in films, TV, books etc... freak out.
Comedy ones are OK (so I've watched Ghosts, Ghostbusters, Harry Potter etc fine.) But stuff like Sixth Sense... freak out.

OhLordyWhatNow · 12/11/2021 23:29

Molluscs 🦑🐌🐙🐚

Garden slugs and snails 🤢 give me the ick and I have to avoid at all costs.

The thought of putting a mollusc in my mouth makes my skin crawl. Oysters, snails, whelks, cockles, mussels, just why would you? 🤮

It has a name! Submechanophobia

SockFluffInTheBath · 12/11/2021 23:31

Moths and butterflies. Horrid fuckers. All need to be shot.

AuntMasha · 12/11/2021 23:31

The sound of someone in heels walking fast on a hard floor. Really makes me anxious and jumpy and I have no idea why.

nixso29 · 12/11/2021 23:34

Knees

AuntMasha · 12/11/2021 23:34

Labels on the back of clothes that you can feel against your skin — I find it unbearable and have to remove them.

ThesecondLEM · 12/11/2021 23:35

Picket fences and Morris dancers

Rolypolyfishheads · 12/11/2021 23:36

Hammers. They actually make me feel physically sick at the sight of them. Creepy looking.
