How do you pronounce...?

63 replies

Feedingthebirds1 · 07/11/2021 17:57

I just fell down an internet rabbit hole and found this - how to pronounce various brand names. I like to think I get things right, but there were a few which caught me out. And sometimes we have 'how do you pronounce...?' threads.

How would you do?

Nootella's fine but it's definitely say-ga not see-ga as they say, I used to work for them.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 07/11/2021 19:50

Their pronunciation of Lidl is wrong. In German it's Lee-dl.

Is meme pronounced meem or mehmay?

iklboogiemaninthecloset · 07/11/2021 19:54

@80Dodgeballs - meem

iklboogiemaninthecloset · 07/11/2021 20:03

You're probably pronouncing it:

Coin-trow?
Hub-lot?
Loo-bow-tin?
Dol-say?
Del-mont?
Loo-is Voo-ton?
Ver-sach-say?
Tag Hew-air?
Ev-vee-arn?
Crispee Crem?
Tiss-sot?

Since when?!

Was just going to ask why, when you turn a Sega console on, does it sing 'say-ga' if it's supposed to be see-ga?

Thank you, I thought I was the only one who ever thoght it was me-may!

I'm not sure I'd ever pronounce uni qlo like the article suggests. Changing the lo to ro just sounds like your intentionally trying to be racistConfused!

whosaidtha · 07/11/2021 20:06

Not on your list but I've been pronouncing blink182 wrong my entire teenage years. Only found out the right way age 31.

KhaleesiOfChaos · 07/11/2021 20:09

@ColinTheKoala

Lidl. I always say Leedel as the Germans would, but even Lidl themselves say Liddle in the UK ;)
Exactly - "the middle of Leedel" doesn't have the same ring! Grin
KhaleesiOfChaos · 07/11/2021 20:09

Or should that be the "meedel of Leedel"?

Umm what? I’d have thought there was only one way to pronounce this - unless the “blink” is pronounced weirdly? I feel like I’m about to find out I’ve been saying it wrong forever..
whosaidtha · 07/11/2021 20:12

@SickAndTiredAgain I thought it was blink one eight two. But it's blink one eighty two

SickAndTiredAgain · 07/11/2021 20:15

@whosaidtha ohhh I thought you were going to say the blink should be pronounced bleeenk or something Grin I’m not sure whether I say eight or eighty, this is like when someone asks how I say scone and I can never remember what I would naturally say!
My mum called them blink one hundred and eighty two, but I think that was deliberate.

Feedingthebirds1 · 07/11/2021 20:17

I always thought JYSK was JISK. But it isn't. It's Jay Why Ess Kay.

If you are spending money with them I doubt most companies give a fuck how you pronounce their name.

If it's a person then I think it should be said in the way the person wants.

There was a kid at school whose name was pronounced 'Why vone ee'.

It was spelt Yvonne

UmmH · 07/11/2021 20:20

@Angel2702

I disagree with Sega, the advert growing up was “do me a favour, plug me into a Say-ga” not see-ga.
That's true. And when it started up a voice would say 'say-gaa!'
iklboogiemaninthecloset · 07/11/2021 20:23

@Badabingbadabum - I know, right?!

GTAlogic · 07/11/2021 20:24

I cba to go through them all but I usually pronounce products or brand names in the same way as they say on the adverts.

It's pronounced to rhyme with 'cream'.

SequinnedShawl · 07/11/2021 20:33

I worked with someone who pronounced Peugeot as poogeeott and refused to accept it was purr-zho (”it ends in a t. You say the t”)

yourestandingonmyneck · 07/11/2021 20:43
@SickAndTiredAgain I thought it was blink one eight two. But it's blink one eighty two
I think one eight two is fine as well though.

It's the more natural way to say it in the UK. In theUS they would generally say one eighty two for a number like that.

I spend a lot of time in the US and the only one I thought was of any relevance on this list was Krispy Creme.

In England, I hear this as crispy crem all the time. It's not, it's just "crispy cream" but spelt a stupid way.

The rest of the list, I've never come across anyone who says the "you're probably saying" version.

Crunchymum · 07/11/2021 20:46

Wasn't there a football commentator who created the ultimate faux pas by saying faux pas as "Fax Paz"

Prattypatel · 07/11/2021 20:49

@IloveJudgeJudy

I read that and disagree on the pronunciation of some of them. Also, and this is a beef of mine. How do you pronounce Paris? I say Paris, but according to the rules of that website I should be saying Paree. Don't get me started on the English pronunciation of Porsche! I speak German but when I'm speaking English I say Porsh. No uh at the end.

Rant over Grin

Ah, english pronunciations of german words...Wink
