AIBU about DPD driver

LollipopsPanda · 21/10/2021 20:08

Today I went to put my 14mo down for lunchtime nap. Recently we've had a lot of Amazon delivery drivers knocking really loudly, and I was expecting a delivery around lunchtime, so I pinned a polite note on the door of our apartment saying "baby sleeping, please knock quietly".

Just as I was just putting baby into cot I heard a knocking. It progressively got louder and louder. The baby started crying and so I started trying to calm her back to sleeping. The knocking kept getting louder. There were multiple knocks then a pause, then another knock and so on.

I was really annoyed because I'd specifically pinned the sign up and now my baby was upset and I was going to have to work hard to get her down again.

I went out to the door to see who it was but before opening the door I peeped through the peep hole to check. I saw the driver from DPD, and saw that he was looking right at the note. Then I saw him read the note and very obviously roll his eyes and huff, and then knock pointedly and extremely loudly and slowly about ten times! Because he didn't know I could see him, I couldn't believe how horrible and deliberately nasty he was being! I wasn't sure whether to open the door as he seemed v passive aggressive. I also wasn't sure why he was still knocking anyway as we have a post room in the building where he could have just left the parcel if the person doesn't answer. Anyway, he then knocked again, but this time before doing so, he fished his massive tablet out of his delivery bag and banged on the door with the corner of it, really bloody loudly! His face was making a sort of "f*#% you" expression. It was so loud the whole corridor must have heard it.

I was so angry, by this time my baby had started crying again. I opened the door and had a go at him. I wasn't rude and I didn't swear but I was as angry as I've felt in years! I was seething and I think it was the mumma bear in me! I said "you are so completely out of line, I know you've read the sign etc". He started saying he needed a photo of the parcel by the door and I interrupted him and told him he'd had plenty of time to take it all the times he was knocking! He then took a photo of my face, and I shut the door on him.

I had to go and look after my baby but I was really fuming!

I'm thinking of complaining to DPD. Would you or should I just forget it? I think he must have knocked at least 10 separate times, each time getting louder until the tablet bashing.

Sorry - SHOULD HAVE answered the door*

CinemaPantomime · 21/10/2021 23:48

Seriously? You had left a note to say knock quietly so he knew you were in. Then you repeatedly ignored the knocks. I don't think you can blame HIM for upsetting the baby. You could have just answered it instead of spying on him which would have ended the knocking and spared the baby being disturbed.

kisgtrsy · 22/10/2021 00:04

You can rate DPD deliveries on the APP. I'd but a negative review on there as the attitude was very childish on his part.

@Skyeheather I don't think you quite appreciate the volume of the knocking. There was no comparison with watching tv or flushing the loo. He was hammering on the door! The whole corridor would have heard it.

Ah @Bellyups the old "PFB" shutdown.

I must make a mental note to self, never to prioritise own child's needs over a delivery man's.

OP posts:
Explosivefarts · 22/10/2021 12:03

The man was just trying to do his job of getting your parcel to you . If he had left after one gentle knock you would be moaning about having to rearrange. World doesn’t revolve around your sleeping baby

LollipopsPanda · 22/10/2021 12:04

@ABitOfAShitShow yes that sounds similar! What batshit responses! So many people putting delivery driver above their own child!

OP posts:
LollipopsPanda · 22/10/2021 12:06

@Explosivefarts nope I'd have been pleased. We have Amazon all the time and they normally just leave in the post room or outside the door. If baby had been asleep I'd have answered, but she was literally just going down so I couldn't answer. Parcels can get delivered the next day if he couldn't find the post room.

Explosivefarts · 22/10/2021 12:07

Oh and he couldn’t have taken the picture till you answered so you were in the wrong there too. They need a picture of it with an open door so they can’t just drop it take picture and take it .

rosesarered321 · 22/10/2021 12:11

You should have written on your note please leave outside the door if that's what you wanted. Writing please knock quietly suggests you will be listening and intend to answer.

AdviceOnLife · 22/10/2021 12:13

Totally off topic.
Why did he take a photo of your face?
Our delivery people have to take a photo of the parcel on the door mat/beside your feet.
One specifically said " don't worry we are not allowed to take photos of the face" as I was awkwardly half smiled & half confused.

I’m guessing the OP had it in her hands and it wasn’t her face at all . They send you the picture after so she could look and see.
TheBlackArt · 22/10/2021 12:46

So you stood there and let him keep knocking? Beyond weird.

Get over it.

If you actually read my post you'll see that I was worried about how aggressive he was being so was in two minds about whether to open the door or not. I thought he might go away like any normal person would if there was no response.

Well go into your email you got saying it was delivered and see the photo it will be there
XiCi · 22/10/2021 13:46

If you wanted it left outside the door or in the post room why didn't you put that on the note instead of asking him to knock Hmm

DamnFoolWhoShotHim · 22/10/2021 13:48

YABU simply for spying on him and not answering the door. He was damned if he did and damned if he did.

Blueberryflavour · 22/10/2021 13:55

You sound completely bonkers you were so worried about your child that you stood for minutes watching the driver banging on the door. If you don’t want parcels being delivered don’t order stuff online it’s simple.

aoeu · 22/10/2021 13:59

You left a note asking the driver to knock.

You then hung around inside watching him knock to see if "he might go away".

And you say you'd prefer it if parcels were left in the post room, or outside the door, or delivered the next day.

Maybe put some different instructions on your note, to say what you'd actually like. In case the next driver isn't psychic also?

girlmom21 · 22/10/2021 14:02

DPD aren't allowed to just leave the parcel without permission from the recipient.
If you'd written a note saying to leave it he would've.

Instead you asked him to knock quietly, then ignored his knock. So he knocked more loudly.

If he'd have knocked once and left you'd have been annoyed that he didn't knock loudly enough to hear.

YABU.

Even if it was of her face, it would've been because she was an arse and wouldn't let him take it of the parcel inside the property so he had to take it of her holding it.
teaandtoast39 · 22/10/2021 14:04

He was an arse. Anyone with a small baby knows how soul destroying it can be for someone to bang on the door when you've just got them off to sleep. The fact that you specifically asked him not to knock loudly and he did so repeatedly makes him an inconsiderate twat. He could have just left the parcel.

I'm not sure you'd get very far with a complaint but yanbu to be annoyed.

TheBlackArt · 22/10/2021 14:20

He was literally just trying to deliver a parcel.

He didn't need to be a nasty piece of work though did he.
