How much attention does your cat need a day?

We are always told that cats are aloof but mine has to have an hour or more of cuddles a day to function. How much attention does you cat need and how affectionate are they?

@gamerchick

She likes a stroke but doesnt like a stroke and will come head bump and then stand just out of arms reach asking for one. Grin
Is she a British shorthair? Ours is exactly like this.
minipie · 19/10/2021 10:47

Oh the just out of reach thing! Mine does it too. She’s a moggy!

Nyfluff · 19/10/2021 10:50

Mine spend at least 50% of their time beside or on me. I've rarely met an aloof cat, other people's cats block the pavement till I engage with them and follow me in my neighbourhood, all friendly and wanting to be stroked.

Just a moggie. Will never be a lapcat personality. Funny things they are. Grin

My boy cat would happily sit on me or be carried the whole time if he could. His need for affection is insatiable lol.
My item two girls couldn't care less, unless they want to lie down and you're in the way in which case they will offer token affection (aka a bribe) to get you to move- then ignore you again.

nettytree · 19/10/2021 11:30

I have a very wet cat sitting on me having a wash as she has just come in from outside. 2nd cat spends the day asleep on the computer beside my husband upstairs in his office. 3rd cat is probably asleep on a bed somewhere, as she likes it quiet.

NotMyCat · 19/10/2021 11:44

Every minute his eyes are open he wants attention. Or just to have a paw on my arm/leg

Underamour · 19/10/2021 12:10

Mine does the head bump too! Also the possessive paw- we seem to have some very affectionate cats! They all have very unique personalities as well😁

This was because I was too hot and told him not to sit on me

Lots, I am not permitted to be on the opposite side of a closed door to her or she will scream until it's opened. She will appear from nowhere when I'm in the back garden (waiting for Ddogs to pee) and wail from the dining room windowsill until I come back in. I'm also not allowed to close the toilet door when I'm in there or she will scream and frantically scratch the door the whole time. She loves to be picked up and cuddled and demands fuss several times a day but will not sit on a lap, no idea why not and I'd love it if she would Sad although I may get nothing done then so maybe it's for the best Grin

I have had cats who -
Disliked being touched and never once came and sat on me (other than when I was about to get a migraine and he would sneak over and lie on my head but get off if I dared even to show any sign I had noticed).
Needed training play every day - jumping courses and would play fetch.
Wanted morning cuddles but not any other time of day.
Yelled at me for head rubs/massages during which he would purr and slobber and yell if I stopped before around 10 mins of proper massage.
Liked to fall asleep on me if I was flat but not if I was sitting upright.
Funny things. But so are we !

Ffs2020 · 19/10/2021 12:38

There aren't enough hours in the day.

Dcat1 is usually quite cuddly anyway but he's worse if he's upset about something. Some days I can't go to the bathroom alone.

Dcat2 wants loads of attention when she wants it, and wants nothing to do with anyone when she doesn't.

Dcat3 likes to be carried like a small child. She's really affectionate.

Dcat4 thinks he's a parrot. He's also taken to doing tiny kitten mews when he wants something as he seems to think the kitten gets more attention than he does.

Dcat5 loves attention at the moment but she's a baby, so that may change as she gets older.

Mine likes lots of interaction, but on her terms. She comes running over to greet me when she hasn’t seen me for a while, but will wriggle free if I pick her up. She has a fishing rod toy she drags over to us if she’s feeling neglected- it’s her way of saying she’s lonely. The rod is three feet long so you can hear her coming, and she quite often gets it stuck on the furniture. Generally though, she likes to be near me, but not on me. “On” is saved for my husband AngryGrin

He’s adorable though! I bet you forgive him anything

@Boood Mine is the same! Fishing rod toy with a feather dangler. She clamps it in her jaws and clatters through the house trying to find us. It invariably gets stuck in a gap near the kitchen door. And we have to follow the doleful miaows and go rescue the toy.

Mine is a 6-month old ickle baby- singleton, house cat and young. So ticks all the boxes for extreme neediness. But surprisingly she is quite okay. Sleeps through the night but cuddles and purrs early morning. Yowls frantically when she can't see us and we are all upstairs, chirps and clucks at us to join her play sessions. And with DD, she definitely has to play chase. It's a game only both of them play, kitten arches her back, flattens her ears and DD has to chase her. Shrieks all round. Hilarious!

Chikapu · 19/10/2021 13:38

I have a six week old kitten so I'm just going to say 'a lot'.

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 19/10/2021 13:43

Mine will never sit on a knee or tolerate cuddles but he likes to be right beside me at all times. If that means lying on the pages of an open book then so be it

Gonnagetgoing · 19/10/2021 16:41

current cat - moved in with me as I think she used to belong to someone else. Have asked around and on FB groups but nothing. Haven't seen anything either...

She's very snuggly and wants lots of cuddles, playtime with a bird toy from Sainsburys, plus sometimes affection equates to how much food she gets.

tedsletterofthelaw · 19/10/2021 17:38

Aside from when he wants food, absolutely none.

He's always been very independent though as he was picked up as a stray at 1 year old when we rescued him so he just does as he pleases and roams most of the day

Mine was stray for 4 years, I don't think he got the memo GrinGrin you can cuddle and squish and kiss him all day and he just sits and purrs. Little weirdo
FiveGs · 19/10/2021 18:14

I am loving all of these cat stories Grin

lljkk · 19/10/2021 18:23

I'm being chewed on by kitten as I type.

Others are more self-contained.

Current situation. The mound under the blanket is the dog. This cat gives zero fucks.

How much attention does your cat need a day?
Sidneysussex · 19/10/2021 19:20

Mine has probably only had 4 hours in last 24 hours when he hasn’t been physically held by a human. Velcro cat here who doesn’t like rain!
He is very clingy and likes to be carried around. The 4 hours not being held involved him eating and supervising the neighbourhood, he takes himself for 2 walks a day. He is more clingy on wet cold days.
Cats can be the opposite of aloof with owners.
