I've never told anyone this, but as a skint slightly wayward youth I found a purse with fancy credit cards, ID etc and an address in it. It also had £150 cash. I dropped it through the letterbox and pocketed £50

I then spent the £50 on fags and groceries...which I left on the bus home Blush. Karma taught me a lesson! I honestly freaked out that it was a sign from the universe and put £50 back through the letterbox when I next got paid. A few years later someone dropped about £200 worth of notes from their back pocket right in front of me. So easily could have just pocketed it. I gave it back and never got a thank you, but karma intact!

My son found a £ 40 M&S gift card in the street. We reported it to the police, the local radio, local FB pages and M&S but it was never claimed so he kept it.

I found a wallet at Glastonbury that had a lot of cash in it.

I handed it in to a policeman who barely grunted at my good deed.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 26/09/2021 22:19

Police don't take in property now, unless it's identifiable, like a wallet with id in, cash, passports and phones. No jewellery.

And unless there's a phone number with the property then no effort is made to find the owner.

I found a Cartier watch once it was by a car in a woods that people dog walk in - I set with my dogs in my car for an hour and waited for the owner - I nipped out and said are you missing anything and her eyes were wild and she said ‘my mothers watch’ I returned it - she tried to insist on the reward as her mother had recently died and I said no. The following week I came back to a huge bunch of flowers on my car and a note which said ‘go to the kings head’ which was the pub in the village - I went in and the bar man said ‘do you have 3 labs?’ And he told me the lady had put £300! In the kitty of the till for me to use whenever I wished for drinks / food etc and she’d left a card saying ‘ I want to thank your owner for being kind. So you each have a £100 for being good patient dogs and waiting with your mummy to do a good deed, so here is some money each’. So for about 10 Sunday’s or more I had a nice Sunday lunch and glass of wine on my way home from the dog walk

I found a solitaire type ring on sandgate beach about 1995 ish ? Took it to Hythe police station. (At end of Douglas avenue, I think it's closed down now ) be really odd if that was yours😳

I found a random wedding band in my house, and kept it with my sentimental stuff. I was enjoying bidding too much on ebay and received a number of deliveries. I can only guess that it was in one of those boxes, but which one and which one came from which seller? Even then, I wasn't certain it was from there. It was just the only thing that made sense at the time. I hadn't ordered any jewellery though.

I felt the best thing I could do was put it with my sentimental stuff because it would be sentimental to someone.

Summertime2 · 26/09/2021 22:31

My daughter found a gold Tiffany bracelet on the tow path on the way home from school. Called the nearest police station to where it was found and they said they would take the details and get in touch if someone reported it missing. They never did so we still have it.

Summertime2 · 26/09/2021 22:33

We also posted about it on the local forum and NextDoor app.

I have found a few wallets, mobile phones and bits of jewellery in my time. Always handed them in if there was any chance they could be claimed. Random cash (ie tenner on the pavement) is fair game though.

Years ago, when filofaxes were a thing, I found one on a bench in a park. I waited for ages but there was nobody else around at all. Seeing that there were credit cards in there, I decided it would be easy to track the person down so took it home. This was pre-google so although I had the name of the owner, I was leafing through all the plastic pouches, pages and pockets and a gazillion business cards for a phone number or clue as to how to find them. Right at the back there was a zipped leather flap thing and when I opened it, it was FULL of money. £12K

Twelve actual thousand pounds.

I rang my mum and we went through the thing again and finally found a business card that matched the name on the credit cards and it was a local clothes boutique. We went there with the filofax and asked if they were the person whose name we had. She was and when we told her we had her filofax and she saw that all the money was there, she burst into tears. It was two month's worth of shop takings that she'd taken out of the safe to bank.

She gave me and my mum a £500 gift card each to spend in her shop. we were both far too chunky at size 14 for any of her pretty size 6 clothes, so had to buy lots of bags, belts, hats and earrings It was amazing though - like doing a trolley dash!

I found a rather nice watch once, and took it to the police. Nobody claimed it, so I got it back and sold it.

If I find cash outside, and I can't see anyone who looks as if they might have dropped it, then I spend it.

Wow wonder if it was mine! No way of ever knowing really is there! Well done for handing it in. I lost mine a good few years before that maybe it was in the sea all that time or maybe people lose them or chuck them all the time and it was someone else's. So what happens these days if someone found jewellery and went to police would they even report it?

I found a nice pair of Persol sunglasses (£100+) left on the Sanpro bin in a public toilet. They didn’t have a case and about a month later I put them in my back pocket and snapped them.
Karma.

Found a mobile back in about 2003 that was lying on the road next to my car parking space. Called her mum from contacts and she was very thankful. Found money a few times , not loads but never anywhere near other people etc so kept it. Found an I-phone in a supermarket loo a few months ago and handed it in to the desk.

My friend found a beautiful ring. Similar to Kate Middleton’s engagement ring. She handed it into the police but it was never claimed so she got it back . She had assumed it was just costume or dress jewellery, it turned out to be real stones and solid gold and worth a fair bit.

KloppsTeeth · 28/09/2021 01:39

I found a Claddagh ring when I was 19. It looked quite old. I handed it in to the police, but no one claimed it, so I was able to keep it.
I was fascinated by it and wore it for years as I felt it shouldnt be stuck in a drawer. Then one day I lost it. I don’t remember where, I just noticed it had gone.
I like to think it is still out there, being lost and found and bringing some joy to the wearer.

Time40 · 28/09/2021 02:21

I've always handed everything I've found in.

If anyone found a silver snake ring on the seafront in Filey in the mid-90s, it's mine, and I'm still heartbroken about it.

NoLongerADoormat · 28/09/2021 02:32

My youngest sister found an iPhone 4 back in 2013 she kept it until my mum found it, went ape shit and took it to the police station 🤣

Imissmoominmama · 28/09/2021 02:51

@WishingYouAMerryChristmasToo- that’s lovely!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 28/09/2021 03:11

A bag full of Christmas shopping from Marks and Spencer's on 23rd December last year, left hanging on the back of a trolley in the trolley park. All sorts in there — soap/hand cream sets, scarf hat and gloves, a jumper, a handbag, some of their jewellery... I hung around in the car park with it for a bit (it was late and dark, so not many cars and I thought I'd spot a harassed person searching), then took it back into Marks and I hope the person did get it back!

I also found a power bank on a train — I was in first class and they have a slightly larger silver plastic bit between the pairs of seats. It was exactly the same colour and pretty much invisible. I only found it because I put my hand there to stand up and nearly broke my wrist when it skidded off! I did hand it in to the conductor, but I cheekily topped my phone up from it a bit first.

MoltenLasagne · 28/09/2021 04:07

I used to live by a postbox so found quite a few things and always tried to return them. Most successful was finding an unlocked phone and was able to contact the owner through a friend.

Worst was finding an unidentifiable envelope full of cash - more than a week's pension or wages, most likely someone's takings although my flatmate reckoned it was drugs related. We handed it into police plus left a note hinting at it on the postbox in case the owner returned but afterwards we were called to say it was unclaimed. I still get a bit upset thinking of someone losing that much cash and how much it must have impacted them. We gave it to charity.

1forAll74 · 28/09/2021 04:35

I found 6 ten pound notes years ago. I was in a deserted two storey car parking area late at night. The car park area was open to the elements, and it was raining at the time, I was just walking to my car, and the concrete floor had little puddles all over the place, and I looked down, and saw the soggy ten pound notes in one puddle, all kind of stuck together with being wet..I just took them home and dried them out, and they were all seemingly ok, and I kept them, and used them later.

I have no idea how someone could have lost some loose ten pound notes just like that.

DinosApple · 28/09/2021 05:44

I lost a cat charm bracelet in the 90s as a 13yo at community hall for an aunty's party in Hertfordshire.

It had one silver cat charm on it and each link was made of a tiny silver cat. It was my great Grandma's. I'm still devastated.
Searched everywhere, tried the police station, but nothing.

This weekend I found a key on a keyring on the beach. It looked like a holiday home key. I tried a holiday rental company with no joy so left it on the sea wall.

Sparklfairy · 28/09/2021 05:51

OP if you lost it in folkestone you were never going to get it back Wink

Malin52 · 28/09/2021 06:05

I found a massive men's gold curb chain bracelet down the side of an occasional chair in a hotel in Bournemouth. It was hideous and very heavy.

I handed it into reception who sent it to me 6 months later to say it hadn't been claimed.

Forgot about it for ages until that boom of gold for cash happened about 10 years ago. The hallmark said 24c gold and it was about 40g so I was set to get around £1500. I was beside myself as I was broke.

The company sent my 'non-gold costume jewellery' back to me two weeks later.

I've still got it. DH wore it to an 80s party a few months ago Grin
