I’m used to power cuts here, the lines seem to come down or get affected by trees quite regularly. I always have a torch , candles and matches as can ignite the gas hob for cooking, hot drinks so I just make the best of it!

I love a power cut, I have teenagers and think of the electric I'll save from them being torn from their computers Grin

I grew up in't hills and we regularly had no power in the winter from snow fall. Think the longest was 5 days, I remember doing my homework by candle light. One of my classmate's excuses for not doing it was they had singed their hair on the candle Grin

We have outages all the time (not in UK). So we are quite prepared really. We all have rechargeable lamps (better than carting a candle all around), gas hob and whistling kettle, mobile data, and charging banks. You can charge your phone in the car if things get desperate.

We know when the whole area is out as most neighbours have generators so you hear them start up and whirr away. I am more polite. I have an inverter for pcs and essentials.

It's always a good time for the DC and I to sit and actually chat, without the distractions of TV, computer games, phone use. It's annoying yes as it always happens when I've bought bulk meat and it's in the freezer 🙄

This thread has made me laugh though...

@TheWeatherWitch

Well if you’re anything like me you think “power cut. Nothing I can do about that. I’ll just watch Netflix. Doh. Ok, I’ll bake a cake. Doh. I’ll do the ironing. Doh. I’ll read my book. But it’s too dark! Doh”

And I grew up with the 3 day week and frequent power cuts in tge 1970’s.

All of the above, plus "hmm, think it's getting a bit chilly. I'll put the kettle on and make a cup of tea. D'oh. Oh well, I'll just heat up a mug of water in the microwave. D'oh"

If you have a smartphone with 4g data that has enough charge you could still watch Netflix!

It'd would be an even nicer experience if you had a tablet with charge because then you could hotspot to your phone for the data and watch on a bigger screen.

I recently had to make sure my laptop had a charge and hotspot to my phone when we were having our fuse board replaced. 4 hours without power.

Made it through and still managed to WFH.

Obviously only works in decent mobile signal areas.

Sorry just getting back to all the helpful people who posted that night, it came back within an hour. I just laid in bed and reflected on how things used to be pre electricity days and it humbled me.

We once had a power cut on Xmas day when i was a teenager, for a few hours, my mum and Dad had a gas oven, but the next door neighbours had an electric one and had to cook their Turkey in our oven funny the things you remember 😂

PigletJohn · 20/09/2021 13:21

Hardly ever get them where I am.

We once had a severe storm (trees, caravans, sheds, powerlines blown over) during the night. I sat up in bed listening to the tiles coming off

until all the lights went

and in the pitch black, I couldn't stay awake.

Now have some portable radios with batteries, and some LED torches and lanterns. Not keen on the fire risk of candles.
