Put any hot water in the kettle into my flask.

@SmellyOldOwls

You look out the window to see who else's power is off Wonder where the candles are Think about how this was how life was in the olden days Go on your phone a bit to tell everyone Thinking about doing something atmospheric to enjoy it like reading a ghost story by candlelight Consider the rest of the weekend stretching ahead of you, electricity free and get excited because clearly this means you'll need to order takeaway food Spend a bit more time on your phone til it comes back on in 15 minutes
You do this.
Fuss · 18/09/2021 00:52

Look in the street. Are there lights on the cars or passing buses? If so it might be just you so check your fuses.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/09/2021 00:55

Mine did too earlier.

That ^^ Meander over to FB to search and see if anyone else has noticed Find someone else has posted on the next door app about it. Get lost in a giant thread with an argument about who owns a pheasant might just be my town that one
StarCat2020 · 18/09/2021 01:18

First of all is it just your electricity that has gone off or does it appear to be affecting others in your street as well?

Can you see other people's lights on when yoiu look out of the window at all?

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 18/09/2021 01:25

See if any of your fuses have tripped - if they have, it'll be something in your house.

If not, it's likely a power cut - check the status for your area online. Also, look and see if street lights etc. are out.

Not a lot you can do if it's a power cut other than meal plan to use up the most expensive things that will be defrosting in your freezer.

If you've a tripped switch it's trial and error to find out what's tripped it. identify where the issue is by switching off different rings, until your main RCD stops tripping. Then unplug everything and see if it will un-trip - if it will, it's an appliance. If it won't, it's your circuit and you'll need an electrician.

Redglitter · 18/09/2021 01:44

Sadly I csn confirm people a really do phone the Police when their power goes off 🙄

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 18/09/2021 02:31

Why would lights on passing cars or buses tell you anything at all? Their electrics run off their engines. Or maybe this is meant as a joke. Grin

Please tell me you're joking

ShinyThingsDistractMe · 18/09/2021 02:40

I don't know why but this thread has tickled me.

Call the police
Check the lights on cars and buses

😂😂

NiceGerbil · 18/09/2021 02:41

Light candles.

Use mobile to check how how long likely to be down.

No big deal.

NiceGerbil · 18/09/2021 02:43

We get power cuts very occasionally here (London).

I get quite excited Grin

Oh that explains that one then! So the guy driving the car I nearly crashed into tonight pulling out of a side road with no lights on hadn't just forgotten to put them on. There was a sole power cut that affected just his car and nothing else! Hmm
poolsidefashion · 18/09/2021 03:43

Call 999 to log it

Clearly
though dd believed it for years

TheWeatherWitch · 18/09/2021 04:09

Well if you’re anything like me you think “power cut. Nothing I can do about that. I’ll just watch Netflix. Doh. Ok, I’ll bake a cake. Doh. I’ll do the ironing. Doh. I’ll read my book. But it’s too dark! Doh”

And I grew up with the 3 day week and frequent power cuts in tge 1970’s.

EastWestWhosBest · 18/09/2021 07:13

All this looking out the window to see if the neighbours lights are off! You lot are two old school. You pull out your phone and check if their WiFi is off. That way you don’t even need to get up.

Mybalconyiscracking · 18/09/2021 07:16

Yeah, it’s the beginning of Armageddon. All the good people have been raptured, the rest of you will just have to manage.

Luckily the WiFi is fantastic in heaven!

BarbaraofSeville · 18/09/2021 07:38

Hopefully it's back on this morning?

Look at your local electricity distribution website. Note that this isn't necessarily the same as who you pay your electricity bills to, ours is something like Northern Power Networks.

They will have information on there as to how widespread the outage is and possibly a reason/expected time for it to come back on. If it's just gone off, they might be asking you to let them know if you've been affected, although in my experience, their emergency on call team are usually on it pretty quickly and they're quite good at putting updates on the website as to what's going on (we've had 2/3 power cuts over the last few years).

But yes, if there's a power cut after about 8/9 pm I'd probably just go read my kindle in bed and expect it to be back in the morning.

BarbaraofSeville · 18/09/2021 07:41

Task for the weekend. Power cut preparation kit. As we go into winter, you could have up to 16/18 hours of darkness, so a lot more inconvenient for it to happen.

Candles, torch, make sure you have a way of using a phone (land line plug in, power bank for mobile). Details of the local power company - this used to be in the phone book, but of course, these don't exist any more.

Dead 💀😆
JosephineDeBeauharnais · 18/09/2021 07:49

Ours goes off probably 3 days out of 7, often more than that. It comes on again quite quickly. Utility company says it’s fixed the problem but it clearly hasn’t, we’re used to it now. The most annoying part is the alarms going off all around the village in the small hours.

MrsDThomas · 18/09/2021 07:52

I love a good powercut. Happens often. Nothing anyone can do apart from eing prepared. Candles, battery operated lanterns etc

I remember the day when mum used to say “I’m calling Manweb to report it!” Now they know about the powercut before you do!

We had a 14 hour cut a few years ago after gorse fire destroyed cables. That wasn’t great though.
