My absolute favourite is "We don't need no education", followed closely by "You're dressed to kill ... and guess who's dying?"

What are your favourites?

@HelplessProcrastinator my favourite lyric right ther

'I saw two shooting stars last night
I wished on them but they were only satellites
Is it wrong to wish on space hardware
I wish, I wish, I wish you'd care'
Billy Bragg and the lovely Kirsty McColl

Bloodylovecheese · 17/09/2021 23:49

She keeps her Moet et Chandon
In her pretty cabinet
"Let them eat cake", she says
Just like Marie Antoinette

MorriseysGladioli · 17/09/2021 23:54

You're a sewer rat decaying in a cesspool of pride
Should be made unemployed
Then make yourself null and void.

Death on two legs - Queen.

MorriseysGladioli · 17/09/2021 23:56

You're twisting my melon, maan!

Step on - Happy Mondays.

Mmmmdanone · 17/09/2021 23:59

You can spend your time alone redigesting past regrets,
Or you can come to terms and realize
You're the only one who cannot forgive yourself,
Makes much more sense to live in the present tense

Present Tense - Pearl Jam

RedRec · 18/09/2021 00:28

Everything from National Express by Divine Comedy but especially:

'But it's hard to get by
when your arse is the size
of a small country'.

MorriseysGladioli · 18/09/2021 00:28

Don't you like the way I dance?
Does it bug you?
Don't you like the cut of my clothes?
Don't you like the way,
I seem to enjoy it?
Stick my fingers right up your nose..

Something better change - The Stranglers.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 18/09/2021 00:29

So many that have been mentioned already:

Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans - this has to be the most perfect lyric imaginable, along with And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make

Throw those curtains wide, one day like this a year would see me right always makes me think of waking up early on holiday in Llandudno

Pleasure like a fairground on the way by Simply Red

As I walked down by the riverside
One evening in the spring
Heard a long gone song
From days gone by
Blown in on the great North wind.
Though there is no lonesome corncrake's cry
Or sorrow and delight
You can hear the cars
And the shouts from bars
And the laughter and the fights.
May the ghosts that howled
Round the house at night
Never keep you from your sleep
May they all sleep tight
Down in hell tonight
Or where ever they may be.
From Lullaby of London The Pouges

Follow on
For the open road is waiting
Like the song
We will welcome what tomorrow has to bring
Be it fair or stormy weather
Take my hand
And we'll walk the road together
I won't mind
If it turns out that we never find the end
For all I ask is that you want me as a friend
From Follow On by Paul Brady

My favourite Radiohead lyrics;
She lives with a broken man
A cracked polystyrene man
Who just crumbles and burns
He used to do surgery
For girls in the eighties
But gravity always wins

"The birds like tender babies in her hands and the old men playing checkers by the trees". (Macarthur Park)

I love the words to Common People (Pulp). They seem so real and angry that I believe whoever wrote them (Jarvis Cocker I presume) had a particular person or group of people in mind

Claire2313 · 18/09/2021 01:26

One of my favourite lyrics is by Razorlight - catching the sparks that flew from your heels, trying to catch your eye.
The song is Somewhere Else but has a really dreadful (in my talentless opinion).
I really love Tori Amos, the line in Tears in your hand where she sings ‘maybe she’s just pieces of me you’ve never seen’ is sort of heart breaking.
On a more sentimental note Tori Amos’s gold dust has the lyrics ( which I find really moving)
How did it go so fast
You'll say as we are looking back
And then we'll understand
We held gold dust in our hands

Another Tori Amos lyric from Hey Jupiter (though I think it’s partly the emotion in her voice I love)
And I thought I wouldn't have to be
With you
A magazine

And her donut song made me laugh....

You told me last night you were a sun now
With your very own devoted satellite
And then there’s my guilty pleasure... the Thompson Twins!!! From ‘Hold me now’

You ask if I love you
Well, what can I say?
You know that I do and if this is just one of those games that we play
So I'll sing you a new song
Please don't cry anymore
I'll even ask your forgiveness
Though I don't know just what I'm asking it for

Happy memories...honest!

"God said to Abraham, 'Kill me a son.' " - Highway 61, Bob Dylan.

"I'm on the side that's always lost
Against the side of heaven.
I'm on the side of snake-eyes, tossed
Against the side of seven." - The Captain, Leonard Cohen.

"Keep you doped with religion and sex and tv
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still fucking peasants, as far as I can see" - Working Class Hero, John Lennon.

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Joni Mitchell Big Yellow Taxi. Current then and current now.

It’s a day with a Y in it so obviously I’m over it,
I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Honesty is such a lonely word
Everyone is so untrue
Honesty is hardly ever heard
And mostly what I need from you

Billy joel

@CovoidOfAllHumanity

Ooh yes Elvis Costello I have always found Good Year for the Roses very moving

I can hardly bear the sight of lipstick on the cigarettes there in the ashtray
Lyin' cold the way you left 'em, but at least your lips caressed them while you packed
Or the lip-print on a half-filled cup of coffee that you poured and didn't drink
But at least you thought you wanted it, that's so much more than I can say for me

What a good year for the roses
Many blooms still linger there
The lawn could stand another mowin'
Funny I don't even care
As you turn to walk away
As the door behind you closes
The only thing I have to say
It's been a good year for the roses

I love this song 😍😍😍
Spagbolplease · 18/09/2021 07:47

I feed the pigeons, and sometimes the sparrows too. It gives me a sense of enormous well being. ( the birds could be the wrong way round)
