My absolute favourite is "We don't need no education", followed closely by "You're dressed to kill ... and guess who's dying?"

What are your favourites?

@80sPadme

Punctured bicycle, on a hillside desolate, I bet you'll make a man of me yet.
It's 'Will nature make a man of me yet'?
snowstorm2012 · 17/09/2021 08:25

Now here comes the next one next in line
Stay as young as you can for the longest time
Cause those days flew by like a priest just passing through
Once when I was little

James Morrison - Once When I Was Little

Love that song!

Take Me to Church, Hozier

Themadcatparade · 17/09/2021 09:40

All for freedom and for pleasure, nothing every lasts forever, everybody wants to rule the world.

Tears for fears.

I know the song has strong political links but on a personal level it resonates with my mental health so much. The line is a reminder to embrace the good whilst I can, because such as the bad days it doesn’t last and I’m sort of forced to make the most of it.

Ikeeponkeepingon · 17/09/2021 09:52

You're pretending you don't care
So I'm doing the same
I like you more when you're taken
Oh, Lord, you're good at this game

Don't do me dirty, show me some mercy
Darling, please lay down your weaponry
How did I end up somewhere between a
Lover and a memory?
'Cause I don't believe in a halfway heart
And you gave me all of my favorite scars
How did I end up somewhere between a
Lover and a memory?

Weaponry - Mike Posner and Jessie J

Meatloaf - Where the rubber meets the road

Thatwaslulu · 17/09/2021 10:12

I was walking in the park
Dreaming of a spark
When I heard the sprinklers whisper
Shimmer in the haze of summer lawns

Then I heard the children singing
They were running through the rainbows
They were singing a song for you
Well it seemed to be a song for you
The song I wanted to write for you, for you

(Marillion - Lavender)

In the name of destiny

Bowie - God knows I'm good

I was walking through the counters of a national concern
And a cash machine was spitting by my shoulder

And I saw the multitude of faces, honest, rich and clean
As the merchandise exchanged and money roared
And a woman hot with worry slyly slipped a tin of stewing steak
Into the paper bag at her side
And her face was white with fear in case her actions were observed
So she closed her eyes to keep her conscience blind

Crying
God knows I'm good
God knows I'm good
God knows I'm good
God may look the other way today

It just makes me want to cry Sad

Also, a verse from a T-Rex song, Girl

O Girl
Electric witch you are
Limp in society's ditch you are
Visually fine
Oh yes you are
But mentally dying

DuchessAnnogovia · 17/09/2021 10:38

So down with the dictatorship that's so cocksure
They use rape as a weapon of war
Down with the man who thinks it's ok to give his wife a punch
Down with the judge who says it weren't rape cause she was drunk
If you're pro-life be a doctor, foster a kid
That's how you make it possible for people to live
But don't you dare tell women what they can and can't do
When it was a women who gave life to you

The King Blues - 5 bottles of shampoo

HotMess21 · 17/09/2021 10:41

And I must be an acrobat
To talk like this
And act like that
And you can dream
So dream out loud
And you can find
Your own way out
You can build
And I can will
And you can call
I can't wait until
You can stash
And you can seize
In dreams begin
Responsibilities
And I can love
And I can love
And I know that the tide is turning 'round
So don't let the bastards grind you down

U2 - "Acrobat"

Fave line

I've got a lot of good things coming my way
and I'm afraid to say that you're not one of them.

  • makes me laugh, from Box Elder (at ) by Pavement. This song was also covered by The Wedding Present.

That said in general I don't really 'hear' or notice lyrics, only the melody, and I blogged about the apparent split between lyric-hearers and lyric-ignorers in 2013.

Well, someone gave a few lines from "Suzanne" by Leonard Cohen above, but the best part is the second verse. You want to have faith, but deep down know it is a fantasy:

And Jesus was a sailor when he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching from his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain only drowning men could see him
He said "All men will be sailors then, until the sea shall free them"
But he himself was broken, long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human, he sank beneath your wisdom like a stone

Love LC!

Tom Waits - Picture In A Frame

HotMess21 · 17/09/2021 11:22

@CovoidOfAllHumanity

Ooh so many I love clever poignant song lyrics

Well I don't believe in an interventionist God
But I know darling that you do
And if I did I would kneel down and ask him not to intervene when it comes to you
Not to touch a hair on your head. Leave you as you are
And if he felt he needs to direct you to direct you into my arms
Into my arms
(Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds)

For you I was aflame
Love is a losing game
Five story fire as you came
Love is a losing game
One I wish I never played
Oh what a mess we made
And now the final frame
love is a losing game
(Amy Winehouse)

What do you get when you kiss a guy?
Get enough germs to catch pneumonia
Then after you do he'll never phone ya
I'll never fall in love again

What do you get when you fall in love?
Nothing but pain lies and sorrow
So for at least until tomorrow
I'll never fall in love again
(Bobby Gentry)

Is it worth it?
A new winter coat and shoes for the wife
And a bicycle on the boys birthday
It's just a rumour that they spread around town
By the women and children
Soon we'll be shipbuilding

With all the will in the world
Diving for dear life
When we could be diving for pearls

It's just a rumour that they spread around town
A telegram for a picture postcard
Within weeks they'll be reopening the shipyard
And notifying the next of kin
Once again

It's all we're skilled in
We will be shipbuilding
Diving for dear life
When we could be diving for pearls

(I know the Deacon Blue version but apparently it's by Robert Wyatt. It's about the Falklands War)

I saw 2 shooting stars last night
I wished on them but they were only satellites
It's wrong to wish on space hardware
I wish I wish I wish you'd care
Oh I don't want to change the world
I'm not looking for New England
I'm just looking for another girl
(billy bragg)

@CovoidOfAllHumanity - Elvis Costello also recorded a beautiful cover of "Shipbuilding"
