My absolute favourite is "We don't need no education", followed closely by "You're dressed to kill ... and guess who's dying?"

What are your favourites?

The sweetest love I ever had I left aside
Because I did not want to be any man's bride

But now I'm older and married I would be
I found my sweetheart but he would not marry me*

Tall Trees in Georgia as sung by Eva Cassidy

Ooh so many
I love clever poignant song lyrics

Well I don't believe in an interventionist God
But I know darling that you do
And if I did I would kneel down and ask him not to intervene when it comes to you
Not to touch a hair on your head. Leave you as you are
And if he felt he needs to direct you to direct you into my arms
Into my arms
(Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds)

For you I was aflame
Love is a losing game
Five story fire as you came
Love is a losing game
One I wish I never played
Oh what a mess we made
And now the final frame
love is a losing game
(Amy Winehouse)

What do you get when you kiss a guy?
Get enough germs to catch pneumonia
Then after you do he'll never phone ya
I'll never fall in love again

What do you get when you fall in love?
Nothing but pain lies and sorrow
So for at least until tomorrow
I'll never fall in love again
(Bobby Gentry)

Is it worth it?
A new winter coat and shoes for the wife
And a bicycle on the boys birthday
It's just a rumour that they spread around town
By the women and children
Soon we'll be shipbuilding

With all the will in the world
Diving for dear life
When we could be diving for pearls

It's just a rumour that they spread around town
A telegram for a picture postcard
Within weeks they'll be reopening the shipyard
And notifying the next of kin
Once again

It's all we're skilled in
We will be shipbuilding
Diving for dear life
When we could be diving for pearls

(I know the Deacon Blue version but apparently it's by Robert Wyatt. It's about the Falklands War)

I saw 2 shooting stars last night
I wished on them but they were only satellites
It's wrong to wish on space hardware
I wish I wish I wish you'd care
Oh I don't want to change the world
I'm not looking for New England
I'm just looking for another girl
(billy bragg)

Take two bodies and twirl them into one, so they don't come undone, hearts and bones Paul Simon

groovergirl · 17/09/2021 00:42

Just move on up
Toward your destination
Though you may find,
From time to time,
Complication.

Curtis Mayfield, "Move On Up" (1970).

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 17/09/2021 00:44

And so I have come to doubt
All that i once held as true
I stand alone without beliefs
The only truth I know is you

And as I watch the drops of rain
Weave their weary paths and die
I know that I am like the rain
There but for the grace of you go I

Simon and Garfunkel Cathy's song
Lovely backstory about Cathy too

Also

I am a rock
I am an island
Don't talk of love
Though I've heard the word before
It is sleeping in my memory
I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died
If I never loved I never would have cried

I am a rock
I am an island
And a rock feels no pain
And an island never cries...

The birds, like leaves on winter wood,
Sing hopeful songs on dismal days.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 17/09/2021 00:45

Love move on up so much too

I put that on loud and sing it to myself when I need a kick up the bum.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 17/09/2021 00:53

I also see that other people have already quoted some more of my favourites
Zion by Lauren Hill
And Hurt Johnny Cash's cover of the NIN song

PandorasMailbox · 17/09/2021 00:53

I can tell by your eyes that you've probably been cryin' forever
And the stars in the sky don't mean nothin' to you, they're a mirror
I don't want to talk about it, how you broke my heart

If I stay here just a little bit longer
If I stay here, won't you listen to my heart, whoa, heart?
If I stand all alone, will the shadow hide the color of my heart
Blue for the tears, black for the night's fears
The star in the sky don't mean nothin' to you, they're a mirror
I don't want to talk about it, how you broke my heart

If I stay here just a little bit longer
If I stay here, won't you listen to my heart, whoa, heart?
I don't want to talk about it, how you broke this old heart
If I stay here just a little bit longer
If I stay here, won't you listen to my heart, whoa, heart?
My heart, whoa, heart

I Don't Want to Talk About it - Everything But the Girl version

DustyMaiden · 17/09/2021 00:56

You want it darker, I kill the flame.

groovergirl · 17/09/2021 01:22

I put that on loud and sing it to myself when I need a kick up the bum.

@CovoidOfAllHumanity, this is exactly what I do too! "Kick up the bum" are just my words to describe Move On Up.
I love how songs eventually find their rightful audience, even if it takes decades. Move On Up was not a big hit on its release. Likewise Jolene (Dolly Parton), Back to Black (Amy Winehouse) and Streets Of Your Town (The Go-Betweens). They're all revered classics now, and deserve to be so.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 17/09/2021 01:24

Also love a lot of Gregory Porters lyrics

Hey Laura it's me
Sorry that I had to ring your doorbell so late but there's something bothering me
I'm really sorry but it just can't wait
Is there someone else instead of me?
Go ahead and lie to me and make me believe
That you're not in love with him
And this fool will see
That the rivers of your love flow uphill to me

And

There will be no love that's dying here
The bird that flew in through my window simply lost his way
He broke his wing I helped him heal and then he flew away
The death of love is everywhere
But I won't let it be
There will be no love that's dying here for me

MorriseysGladioli · 17/09/2021 01:26

Stone me, why can't you see?
You're a no one, nowhere, washed up baby who'd look better dead.

I am the resurrection- The stone roses.

GatoradeMeBitch · 17/09/2021 01:42

It's a bit young but I like the double meaning at the start of Blackpink's first single

"Been a bad girl, I know I am. And I'm so hot, I need a fan"

I've got a teenager in the house. I have constant BTS and Blackpink teenybopper earworms in my brain Grin

occa · 17/09/2021 01:56

Oh I'm a lucky man, to count on both hands the ones I love
Some folks just have one, yeah, others, they've got none

vastgrandupgrade · 17/09/2021 02:01

You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive
Well you said that we made such a pretty pair and that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved
And one of them was me

occa · 17/09/2021 02:24

Well I haven't always been a perfect person
I haven't done what mum and dad had dreamed
But on the day I die
I'll say at least I fucking tried
And that's the only eulogy I need.

pollywollydoodler · 17/09/2021 02:26

Every day's like Christmas Day without you, it's cold and there's nothing to do...

OddshoesOddsocks · 17/09/2021 02:28

‘I can’t see, I just stare’

From Pearl jam’s alive always resonates with me so much. Dp said once that when I was in the throes of PND I’d often just stare straight ahead. I don’t remember doing it and I’m sure it was just absent staring, I wasn’t seeing anything.

I’d listened to that song 100s of times before but when he said that it gave that line a whole new meaning and understanding for me

pollywollydoodler · 17/09/2021 02:31

@Snugglybuggly

The whole of the moon

Trudging slowly over wet sand
Back to the bench where your clothes were stolen
This is the coastal town
That they forgot to close down
Armageddon, come Armageddon!
Come, Armageddon! Come!

Morrissey - Every Day is Like Sunday.

pollywollydoodler · 17/09/2021 03:15

This is why my sometimes stroppy teen is nicknamed Mardy Bum..

Well, now then, mardy bum
I've seen your frown and it's like looking down
The barrel of a gun
And it goes off
And out come all these words
