My absolute favourite is "We don't need no education", followed closely by "You're dressed to kill ... and guess who's dying?"

What are your favourites?

I love most things by Pulp but these two catch an atmosphere so perfectly, they make me squirm with happiness:

When you left,
I didn't know how I was going to forget you.
I was hanging by a thread and then I met her.
Selling pictures of herself to German business men.

and

The bed has seen it all
From the first time to the last
The silences of now
And the good times of the past
And it only cost ten pounds
From a shop just down the road
Mind you, that was seven years ago
And things where very different then.
It didn't get much rest at first
The headboard banging in the night
The neighbours didn't dare complain
Oh everything was going right
Now there's no need to complain
'Cause it never makes a sound
Something beautiful left town
And she doesn't even know its name

MoiraNotRuby · 16/09/2021 21:52

"They'll ask me how I got her
I say
I saved my money"

flibberyjibbery8 · 16/09/2021 21:53

Who said unbroken happiness
Is a bore, is a bore?
Who said it, my love? I don't mind it
Anymore, anymore
And I reach out a hand over your side of the bed
Pull that blanket over your shoulders exposed to the night
And the hunger of those early years will never return
But I don't mind, I don't mind
Cause I love my mind when I'm fucking you
Slowed down to a crawl
Years of crime and the bread line
Have not at all dimmed your shine
So let's stay in, let the sofa be our car
Let's stay in, let the TV be our stars
I found my dancing shoes but they don't fit
All the bright lights do is bore me
They bore me

Sorry it's so long but to leave any bit out would be an injustice. Some of my all-time favourite lyrics.

peachescariad · 16/09/2021 21:55

It's a turn-around jump shot
It's everybody jump start
It's every generation throws a hero up the pop charts
Medicine is magical and magical is art
Think of the boy in the bubble
And the baby with the baboon heart

Paul Simon

OhWhyNot · 16/09/2021 21:55

Tell me no secrets
Tell me some lies
Give me no reasons
Give me alibis

  • Don’t it make my brown eyes blue by Crystal Gayle

Punctured bicycle, on a hillside desolate,
I bet you'll make a man of me yet.

@WhenSheWasBad

It’s so easy to laugh, it’s so easy to hate, it takes strength to be gentle and kind.

If love's the truth then look no lies
And let me swim around your eyes
I've found a place I'll never leave
Shut my mouth and just believe
Love is the truth I realize
Not a stream of pretty lies
To use us up
And waste our time

And we. Played the first thing that came in our head, and it just so happened to be, the best song in the world it was the best song in the world
Tenacious D

Graphista · 16/09/2021 21:58

Pretty much the whole of George michael's praying for time but especially :

The rich declare themselves poor
And most of us are not sure
If we have too much but we'll take our chances

And charity is a coat you wear twice a year
This is the year of the guilty man
Your television takes a stand

It's hard to love
There's so much to hate
Hanging on to hope
When there is no hope to speak of

Also in a similar vein

Bruce Hornsby that's just the way it is

The man in the silk suit hurries by
As he catches the poor old ladies' eyes
Just for fun he says, "get a job"

Said, hey old man how can you stand
To think that way
Did you really think about it
Before you made the rules?

Waterboys the whole of the moon mainly cos it's lyrically SO much fun to sing and scans so well

I had flashes
But you saw the plan
I wandered out in the world for years
While you just stayed in your room

You were there in the turnstiles
With the wind at your heels
You stretched for the stars
And you know how it feels
To reach too high
Too far too soon
You saw the whole of the moon

I was dumbfounded by truth
You cut through lies
I saw the rain dirty valley
You saw Brigadoon

Unicorns and cannonballs
Palaces and piers
Trumpets towers and tenements
Wide oceans full of tears
Flags rags ferryboats
Scimitars and scarves
Every precious dream and vision
Underneath the stars. Basically total nonsense but immensely joyful to sing

ChequerBoard · 16/09/2021 21:58

@Emerarta

You took your time to come back this time The grass has grown under your feet In your absence I changed my mind And someone else is sitting in your seat

I know that I said there'd be no one else
I know that I said I'd be true
But baby, I've burned out cupid's arrow
And here's the short and the narrow
I've nothing left to offer you - Alison Moyet all cried out

Absolutely - in fact the whole of the Alf album is just fantastic.

VienneseWhirligig · 16/09/2021 21:58

I saw a war widow in a launderette
Washing the memories from her husband's clothes
She had medals pinned to a threadbare greatcoat
A lump in her throat with cemetery eyes
I see convoys curbcrawling west german autobahns
Trying to pick up a war
They're going to even the score
Oh... I can't take any more
I see black flags on factories
Soup ladies poised on the lips of the poor
I see children with vacant stares, destined for rape in the alleyways
Does anybody care, I can't take any more!

Marillion

Clarinet53 · 16/09/2021 21:58

When you're starting to cry
Come and sit by my side
I will love you so
When the nightmares come
I will try to be fun, even though
I'm so scared you know

PalacesOfMontezuma · 16/09/2021 21:59

He's made of bones, he's made of blood
He's made of flesh, he's made of love
He's made of you, he's made of me

I'm drunk for your love
Speed into my life
Speak to me now
Oh, just speak to me someone
For I know your taste
And I can supply

I was looking for a job and then I found a job
And heaven knows, I’m miserable now

Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now, The Smiths

You’re so vain
You probably think this song is about you

You’re So Vain, Carly Simon

Someone left the cake out in the rain

MacArthur Park, Jimmy Webb

I keep your picture
Upon the wall
It hides a nasty stain that's lying there

I’m not in love, 10cc

What would an angel say?
The devil wants to know!

Criminal, Fiona Apple

@LowbrowVictoriana I came here to write those exact Cohen lines! Also from Cohen:

And thanks for the trouble you took from her eyes,
I thought it was there for good, so I never tried.

Great thread, OP.

ChequerBoard · 16/09/2021 22:05

Have to add the timeless 'You're So Vain' by Carly Simon, some of the best lyrics ever:

You walked into the party like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye in the mirror, as you watched yourself gavotte
And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner
They'd be your partner and

You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain (you're so vain)
I bet you think this song is about you
Don't you don't you?

You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive
Well you said that we made such a pretty pair and that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved
And one of them was me
I had some dreams they were clouds in my coffee clouds in my coffee and

You're so vain
