My absolute favourite is "We don't need no education", followed closely by "You're dressed to kill ... and guess who's dying?"

What are your favourites?

You come to me with a bone in your hand
You come to me with your hair curled tight
You come to me with positions
You come to me with excuses
Ducked out in a row
You wear me out
You wear me out
We've been through fake-a-breakdown
Self hurt
Plastics, collections
Self help, self pain,
EST, psychics, fuck all
I was central
I had control
I lost my head
I need this
I need this
A paper weight, junk garage
Winter rain, a honey pot
Crazy, all the lovers have been tagged
A hotline, a wanted add
It's crazy what you could've had

Leonard Cohen’s ‘Chelsea Hotel’, his ode to Janis Joplin.

I remember you well in Chelsea Hotel
You were famous, your heart was a legend
You told me again you preferred handsome men
But for me you would make an exception

And clenching your fist for the ones like us
Who are oppressed by the figures of beauty
You fixed yourself, you said: Well, never mind
We are ugly but we have the music

TheOneWithTwoParties · 16/09/2021 19:59

Most recently Black Dog by Arlo Parks had me stop in my tracks because the lyrics are just incredible. The opening "I'd lick the grief right off your lips" is outstanding and it just builds from there. Such an evocative description of grief and depression.

Let's go to the corner store and buy some fruit
I would do anything to get you out your room
Just take your medicine and eat some food
I would do anything to get you out your room

I want to reconcile the violence in your heart
I want to recognize your beauty's not just a mask
I want to exorcise the demons from your past
I want to satisfy the undisclosed desires in your heart

No more games, I'ma change what you call rage
Tear this motherfuckin' roof off like two dogs caged
I was playin' in the beginnin', the mood all changed
I been chewed up and spit out and booed off stage
But I kept rhymin' and stepped right in the next cypher
Best believe somebody's payin' the Pied Piper
All the pain inside amplified by the
Fact that I can't get by with my nine to
Five and I can't provide the right type of
Life for my family 'cause man, these goddamn food stamps don't buy diapers
And its no movie, there's no Mekhi Phifer
This is my life and these times are so hard
And it's getting even harder tryna feed and water my seed, plus
Teeter totter, caught up between bein' a father and a prima donna
Baby mama drama, screamin' on her, too much
For me to wanna stay in one spot, another day of monotony's
Gotten me to the point, I'm like a snail I've got
To formulate a plot or end up in jail or shot
Success is my only motherfuckin' option, failure's not
Mom, I love you, but this trailer's got to go, I cannot grow old in Salem's Lot
So here I go, is my shot
Feet, fail me not, this may be the only opportunity that I got

Eminem, Lose Yourself

What are your favourites?

I have a few:

"Patience is like bread, I say. I ran out of that yesterday."

"I was catching the sparks that flew from your heels, trying to catch your eye."

"I watch the ripples change their size, but never leave the stream of warm impermanence. And so the days float through my eyes, but still the days seem the same."

"Here in the dark, I cherish the moonlight.
I'm in love with the way you're in love with the night. And it travels from heart to limb to pen"

Pretty much anything that comes from the heart and brain of the beautiful Brian Fallon.

BronwenFrideswide · 16/09/2021 20:02

A quirky one:

Oh Lord, won't you buy me
A Mercedes Benz?
My friends all drive Porsches
I must make amends
I worked hard all my lifetime
No help from my friends
Oh Lord, won't you buy me
A Mercedes Benz?

Janis Joplin.

A light that was long gone still burning strong
You were sitting, your fingers like fuses
Your eyes were cinnamon

While every line speaks the language of love
It never held the meaning I was thinking of
And I can't decide over right or wrong
I guess sometimes you need the place where you belong

One drink too many and a joke gone too far
I see a face drive like a stolen car
Gets harder to hide when you're hitching a ride
Harder to hide what you really saw

Beth Orton - Stolen Car

Death doesn't discriminate
Between the sinners and the saints
It takes and it takes and it takes
And we keep living anyway
We rise and we fall and we break
And we make our mistakes

Hamilton Musical, wait for it.

'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life. You're a slave to the money then you die.

IncorrigibleTitmouse · 16/09/2021 20:04

@Doubleraspberry

If I had $1 million, I would buy you a green dress - not a real green dress, that’s cruel.
That song makes me so happy. You real do need to know the rest of it to fully appreciate how great that line is.

Claraboochuffing · 16/09/2021 20:05

I'm still caught in your gravity
No matter the distance between us
Our joy lives in the moments we share
Love's truest meaning lives when you're not there
Will you wait, will you wait for me?
There's always a space in my heart for you

DoesHePlayTheFiddle · 16/09/2021 20:05

Open up your arms
Let the healing begin
For those of us still standing ...

Nothing could be sadder than a glass of wine alone, Loneliness, loneliness, such a waste of time.

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today, to get through this thing called "life."

@Chikapu

The last girl that I loved she was a low and lusty liar She set my heart on fire, but made me choke Her beauty was a sight to see, but she didn't save it all for me I found other fires by following the smoke

Frank Turner - Substitute.

@chikapu That was going to be one of my choices!

"I've had many different girls inside my bed, but only one or two inside my head"

Frank Turner was the last gig we went to right before lockdown, I was starting to get scared about going (we had a 7 month old baby in the house and nobody knew much about the impact Covid) but I'm glad we did, was a nice memory and thankfully everything was OK. He's touring again soon but right before I'm due #2 so don't think I'd manage!

"I'm working on my faults and cracks
Filling in the blanks and gaps
And when I write them put they don't make sense
I need you to pencil in the rest"

You can see the door is open
So if you don't want your nose broken
You had better go away
Cos Terry's coming round today

Terry - Kirsty McColl

Beancounter1 · 16/09/2021 20:14

I second everyone who has mentioned Billy Joel, especially 'An Innocent Man' and 'She's always a woman'. Also, everything Paul Simon wrote.

"The Mississippi delta was shining like a national guitar" - Paul Simon

Also, someone already quoted a line, but how is this for philosophy:

"and then one day you find, ten years have got behind you,
no-one told you when to run.
You missed the starting gun.
So you run and you run to catch up with sun but it's sinking
racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
shorter of breath
and one day closer to death."
Time - Pink Floyd

Willy Nelson 'red headed stranger'
You can't hang a man for shooting a woman, who's trying to steal your horse.

But if you can stand the test,
You know your worst is better than their best.

SpeakingFranglais · 16/09/2021 20:18

Not brilliant, but hideous

Last night I heard my momma singing a song
Ooo eee chirpy chirp cheep cheep
Woke up this morning and my momma was gone

What is that all about? Haunted me as a child.
