Annoying people in exercise classes

I did Pilates this morning and the teacher is fab. I love her classes. But there was a new person in the class today and ALL she did was question the teacher.

‘I’ve been doing Pilates 30 years and we were never taught this way.’

‘Are you sure? I was always taught to have my arms this way.’

‘How long have you been teaching? My previous teacher said it should be done like this.’

AAARGH! SHUTUP SHUTUP SHUTUP!

Then we got to the stretches and she was literally moaning as though she was having an orgasm. It was really odd and rude.

And don’t get me started on the men who breathe competitively in Pilates. Grin

Used to do capoeira, nice enough people. But some people didn't know their own strength or speed. Also been farted on twice 😬😬😬. Also had one guy who was wearing loose short shorts with loose boxers underneath. Cut a story short, I had Betty Swallocks in my face 😬😬😬.
Generally a nice crowd with Capoeira though. Give it a try 🤸🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷

I love yoga classes but they do always seem to attract some real characters. I often think of it as human soup - a random collection of people in a room with a common interest.

Have you come across the “yoga mat listing on Craigslist” before? This sums it up 🤣

Urgh, there is a bloke in my body pump class that I’ve seen in there for years. Every week, every single week he is surprised that at the end of the track he’ll need to change weights so he potters about not changing them and then as the new track is about to start changes them! Then he’s late starting the track so ends up doing his own moves. He’s always near me too. It’s SO off putting, i seethe about him. 😂 I just don’t understand what he gets out of it?!

We had stickers on the gym floor in covid for distancing and I unknowingly stood in someone’s space one week. the drama the next week about how happy she was to be back in her spot and how she’d had a horrible time the previous week was crazy!

I went to ONE gym class a few years ago and vowed never to do it again.

My gym was only small, and all the ‘regular’ class-goers looked down on everyone else who was just using the gym equipment. It was bizarre. There were comments on the gym’s Instagram page from people along the lines of “it’s a shame not everyone in our gym shows the same team spirit” blah blah blah. Well, if their attitude was “team spirit” then I’m happy to be a gym loner.

Especially one in particular, who needed everyone to know that she was best mates with all the instructors. She used to storm in like she owned the place, then would proceed to ‘warm up’ for the classes by putting the treadmill on a steep incline and power walking while holding on for dear life. Hmm

This is why l much prefer exercising in comfort of my own home. There are some good Pilate and yoga instructors on youtube. Nice to mix it up.

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 04/09/2021 21:11

There is a lone man who comes to Zumba class and he always stands at the back.

Is this a bit creepy?

PizzaBreath · 04/09/2021 21:42

@MissMarplesGoddaughter nah, he’s prob a bit shy if it’s all women. Plus Zumba is perceived as a women’s class so he’s probably trying to keep a low profile!

ParkheadParadise · 04/09/2021 21:49

Bloody hell, my fitness classes are nothing like this.
You stand wherever you like, no one is competitive, everyone says good morning we do the class everyone goes home.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 04/09/2021 21:54

I can't believe people fart at will! That's my worse nightmare in a class. I was on medication for a while that made me fart like a rugby forward after a night on Guiness. Had to give up yoga and Pilates will taking it, as too high risk 😉

I once held a fart in for an entire yoga glass, I genuinely think it should be in the skills section of my CV.

😆 @Simonjt

billycorn · 04/09/2021 22:13

I do reformer Pilates and there’s one ‘regular’ who breathes out really loudly, has to have the same machine every session and is ultra smug. She’s like a machine but perhaps that’s because she has the time to attend daily classes, unlike me who has to work for a living. Yes, I sound bitter but I don’t care!

Mulletsaremisunderstood · 04/09/2021 22:21

@Foxyloxy1plus1

Any recommendations for free yoga and Pilates online. I used to pay monthly for exercise classes and enjoyed them, but I need to save the money now.
For Pilates you could try Blogilates, she has mostly 10 to 15 minute videos so great for beginners.
LolaRoses · 04/09/2021 22:33

I left a pole fitness/aerial fitness gym I went to as a woman who attended all of the classes spoke loudly throughout each lesson in a put on, baby, squeaky voice, saying stupid babyish comments and statements

Sommernacht89 · 04/09/2021 22:51

I was surprised,it was a she.most often this kind of annoying behaviour comes from a man who cant cope with being taught by a woman.

echt · 04/09/2021 23:11

This is a friend of a friend story, and I've told it before, but I've no reason to believe it's not true. This was several years ago.

The FOAF was in a gym down on the Mornington Peninsula and there was this man grunting like a grunty thing on the weights. The FOAF pulled a face of displeasure and the grunty man immediately apologised sincerely.

It was Hugh Jackman. :o

CovidCorvid · 05/09/2021 09:17

As I'm sat waiting for pump class to start I'll add another.

The woman who turns up to pump every week with her two young kids, they're about 5yo. She stands and watches while they set up for her. Lots of running about, squealing and full volume arguement between the kids about who gets to carry what. While she stands there smiling.

Just fuck off.

Seymour5 · 05/09/2021 09:27

I go to a class for older people, exercising to music. Most must have cloth ears, few actually move in time! The instructor is keeping time, but they manage to ignore that. Note to self, stand nearer the front in future!

wizzywig · 05/09/2021 09:30

@echt I also believe the story. Hugh would apologise

Milkbottlelegs · 05/09/2021 09:32

Where on earth are you lot all going to classes?! Other than a slightly deep breather in Pilates I’ve never encountered any of this annoying stuff! Didn’t realise how lucky I was until I read this!

user1471538283 · 05/09/2021 09:37

Before the pandemic there was one woman who had no special awareness. She wore lots of jewelry and would also want to be where I was. I would turn around and she was about a foot at my side, in a huge gym.

Blerg · 05/09/2021 09:48

I went to a yoga class for a term. Everyone was so unfriendly. I wasn’t trying to be BFFs but a hello would have been nice. I was in a bad place with my mh and thought yoga would help but I just felt I didn’t belong because of my size and ability level.

Also in the class in the relaxing section, someone would seemingly fall asleep and snore within seconds of laying down. It was amazing.

supadupapupascupa · 05/09/2021 10:39

My yoga teacher encourages you at various points to do what your body wants you too and loves it when we are all in different positions. It means we are listening to our needs.

supadupapupascupa · 05/09/2021 10:41

@Shirleyphallus

I went to a exercise class once and stood at the front (cos what’s the point of standing at the back when you can’t see the instructor?) and a regular told me that you usually have to go to a few classes before you can stand at the front, I ignored her and then half way through she told me “oh you’re actually ok, you can stay at the front”. Fuck off do you think you’re the class police?
I stand at the front because I have hearing difficulties. The teacher saves me a place now Grin
PilatesPeach · 05/09/2021 14:31

@supadupapupascupa am wondering if that is me! Probably not but I say that too "your body will tell you what it needs"
