40 flamingo things

TheOrigRights · 20/08/2021 13:49

It's my little sister's 40th at the end of Sept.
I'm one of 4 sisters (and a brother who keeps out of the way!) and we are clubbing together for a day out to celebrate - meal, event etc, but we all do something individual as well.

I want to get her 40 flamingo things; maybe one or two things up to a tenner or so and then a bunch of stuff (bookmark, pen, lip balm, candles, that sort of thing).

All idea welcome - daft or otherwise.

@FuckingFlumps yup, genuinely would be pleased and requires somE thought and imagination.

For example, a pack of 10 flamingo themed pencils and 10 hair clips and that's 20 items done.

I would absolutely find a use and enjoy some of the things OP mentioned
Bookmark
Small coin purse
Candle
Hand fan for hot weather
Scarf
Earrings
Phone cover
Broach/pin
Umbrella
Reusable shopping bag
Socks

There we are, no tat in the above (subjective I know) but I'd use them and just 9 more items to find with the pencils and hair clips

I agree about the mean girls comments

This is the gift I would prefer.

BarbaraofSeville · 20/08/2021 14:43

There's probably not a 40 YO woman alive who would welcome being given 40 of anything, let alone 40 cheap items that will fall into the categories of either things she'd never want or buy herself or things she already has if she actually wants them.

Galassia · 20/08/2021 14:44

@JovialNickname

I do think that even if she loves flamingoes, or it's a well loved in-joke, 40 small cheap flamingo items are too much. She's going to have trouble assimilating her face into surprise/ pleasure once she's opening present number 29, 30, 31. I think the flamingo tree and flamingo outfit are both brilliant though!

God, what a load of miseries on here today.
OP, if you are still around (obs reading the thread) would love to have you as my DSIS , we coulld have a scream.

I hadn't ever seen or heard of a flamingo tree but might have a look as i think it looks gorgeous.

Also, think a pp mentioned up thread about adopting a flamingo, obviously you'd need to look into it but if you did it through a zoo there would probably be a years free entry and at least a toy.
Good luck with whatever you decide to go with. You all sound like you will have a great time. Best wishes to your DSIS. 🎂🍾🍷🍻🍹.

Not cheap, but gorgeous artwork flamingo print

SmileyClare · 20/08/2021 14:57

Galassia That so awful it's hilarious Grin and would also double up as a covid mask on a day out.

I wouldn't mind several reusable shopping bags in flamingo print. That's a good suggestion above. You could include say 10 cupcakes with a little flamingo decoration on top to bulk out the number of items.

Brollypackedforscottishholiday · 20/08/2021 14:57

Shower curtain!!
Towel!
Bath mat!

PeonyTime · 20/08/2021 14:57

I think this is different to the tree above, certainly I've only ever seen it as a pot plant

But you wouldn't prefer it over a few gifts which were just as thoughful but not brought simply to fit a theme surely?

I honestly don't think many 40 year olds would be pleased with some hair clips and pencils.

ACPC · 20/08/2021 15:05

Why are you trying to have fun op? Shame on you Angry
Yes, I agree that you should try and get her nice things that will be used, not landfill tat but the actual idea is obviously something you think your sister would like. So ignore the chewy faced fun sponges.

1forAll74 · 20/08/2021 15:08

Oh dear, why not one nice quality gift, instead of all the house cluttering tatt.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 20/08/2021 15:16

Presumably the same reason so many do Christmas stockings as they don’t want to do just one gift.
BradPittsLeftTit · 20/08/2021 15:21

@FuckingFlumps I mean, I can say it again but no, I'd really like this as a theme. Such fun.

And I'm 42 for those saying no one over 40 would like. I would have really enjoyed opening these for my 40th!

OP is the one who knows the giftee after all so maybe...just maybe...she might be better qualified to know what she'd like 🤷🏻‍♀️

BarbaraofSeville · 20/08/2021 15:22

Well people don't really do Christmas stockings for 40 YO women and if they do, they maybe put in some chocolate and booze and one or two meaningful trinkets, not 40 random items chosen to fit a theme.

I really don't see what is 'fun' about buying, wrapping or being given 40 of anything. The very thought of it brings me out in a cold sweat.

So why join a thread that specifically is about this then if you are so against it? I mean, other than to pour scorn over the OP?
BarbaraofSeville · 20/08/2021 15:27

Because it needs saying that this really isn't the lovely idea that the OP thinks it is.

SirenSays · 20/08/2021 15:28

Ignore the fun sponges OP. Paperchase sell pretty flamingo photo frames.
What about flamingo gin? I'm sure there are a few on the market. Or a flamingo swell water bottle?

Galassia · 20/08/2021 15:34

You have to admit that the thread is rather at odds with all the loony climate change threads where people have lapped up the propaganda and are now wanting to grow their own clothes, knit their own yoghurts and go to work using a hoop and stick to save the planet!

As much as I laugh at the climate change nonsense I do concede to that we should not be buying useless tat from Chy-Na!

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 20/08/2021 15:36

The thing is, I can see how it kind of sounds nice initially. But imagine sitting there while your sister gradually unwraps 40 tiny presents, none of which are big enough or special enough to spend long looking at/talking about.

How long is it going to take? At least half an hour, maybe longer.

Is she going to have to react to each one? How long before it gets a bit dull and she's literally just picking up presents, opening them, putting them down and moving on to the next one.

Oh wow! A flamingo lip balm!
Oh wow, another flamingo!
A flamingo hair clip? You shouldn't have!
Ah, another flamingo.
And another...
And another...

I also don't think it changes anything that the gifts are 'useful'. Lots of things are useful, e.g. sanpro, but that doesn't mean I want them as gifts.

I'd also question whether randomly given reusable shopping bags, flasks etc. are actually useful tbh.

Take bags for example - like most adults, I have several bags for life, and a handful of fabric tote bags for shopping. Another one would be theoretically 'useful', but it wouldn't be needed. Unless you've noticed that she doesn't have a flask, or her flask is old and falling apart, a new flask isn't actually 'useful'.

can't find the uK link but we bought these in M & S Lincoln today

megletthesecond · 20/08/2021 15:39

My first thought was it would just be tat.

Get a flamingo tree and / or sponsor a flamingo at the zoo instead.

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 20/08/2021 15:41

I would get her one special thing (the flamingo tree posted above looked lovely, or a beautiful bit of flamingo art for her wall), and a fun consumable thing on the side - flamingo sweets or chocolates perhaps, or a pink flamingo themed gin.

Less is usually more when it comes to gifts. Everyone remembers and appreciates the special, thoughtful gifts they've been given in their lives. No-one remembers the piles of cheap stuff that was there to bulk it out.

Isababybel · 20/08/2021 16:07

Another who would be very ungrateful and not happy to receive all of this! I would be sending it all to the charity shop, except for the lip balm.
