Brazen and Strange requests on NextDoor

I don’t know if it’s just a reflection of the people who live in my area or if Nextdoor just attracts strange people in general but some of the posts on my neighbourhood page are a just a mix of brazen entitlement and weirdnessGrin

Today a man has posted a long message explaining he desperately needs someone with a car to pick up his relative from Heathrow. He is not willing to pay but has offered to buy the driver a Costa coffee by way of compensation. For context, it would be a 40 mile round trip. Residents have responded asking why he cannot meet his relative himself or take the Heathrow Express/tube if he doesn’t have a car. He has replied that he doesn’t want to travel on public transport, his relative cannot take the Express as the ticket is “not in her budget”. When a (male) respondent offered to help the poster replied no thanks, the driver must be a womanHmm

Another woman has written an abusive message criticising people who offered to help fund her 5 year old’s birthday party and then backed out. She posted a week ago stating she needed several hundreds of pounds to buy a bike and organise a party. Apparently someone sent her a PM offering to meet her outside Morrison’s to buy her a birthday cake and didn’t show up. Another offered to transfer her money and didn’t. A third person offered something else and didn’t follow through and so it went on. Obviously sad if true but…who goes onto a public site and makes these kinds of requestsShock

Last week someone drew an intricate picture of a missing shoe. They lost it in a park whilst sunbathing(!) and said they were willing to pay compensation as the shoe had sentimental value (why they didn’t just post a picture of the surviving shoe is anyone’s guess).

I admit I just go on ND for the LOLs now!

Catalytic converter theft reports. That's the sole purpose of ND!

I actually want to sign up anonymously and just read what’s going on but I had a look and you need to provide a lot of identifying information so I’m put off by that!

Also your account is somehow verified? Not sure how or who verifies you, feels a bit odd…

You also have to give them access to you contacts and they send out fake letters from you inviting you neighbours to join.
I refused to join because of the contacts, but then got a letter from someone 2 roads away inviting me to join. It is not from that person but from Nextdoor. Very dodgy company

Ours is usually about parking, parking, inconsiderate parking with photos of the offending car, plus the road. Then comments saying 'move then!' Re the parking.

But the latest outrage is a post about a group of 'hoodies' walking past the posters house smoking pot and the 'tongue lashing' said neighbour inflicting on these reprobates. The comments are either OMG drug crime and the obvious resulting murders, they need a kicking or get a grip etc. Theres even crime graphs and statistics etc
The comments are so numerous, it might break the internet.
Awaiting Godwin's Law.

Oh and dog poo is a favourite plus missing cats. And PARKING.

@AlfonsoTheMango

The thieving bee complaint made me laugh.
I want to know how he knew they were his neighbour's bees-were they all wearing little ID discs?
meadowbleu · 15/08/2021 14:22

I signed up with a throw away email address and added the minimum of info and no photo. I think where I live is really run of the mill.

Going back through threads it's a lot of small businesses, requests for recommendations, local events, lost dogs and cats or lost and found generally, with a few posts about road closures, road works and local vaccination centre appointments or walk-ins. This spring and summer there were some discussions about roadside verges and the merits of not mowing. All very ordinary. I have seen a couple of arguments, one was over a wandering cat I think, can't remember what the other was, nothing quirky or worth searching for.

Loving the bees and that cat's expression, wish we had something like that.

That’s the whole point of it

It’s a neighbourhood site for people who live near each other. Of course you have to give some identifying information- that’s how they make sure the posts are only visible to a small community of people proven to live near each other

And having to use your real name means there is generally no trolling, no personal attacks, no overt nastiness

There are plenty of different opinions but on the whole, forcing people to link the posts to their name holds them far more accountable than most of the nasty posters you see on Twitter and here

Someone asking to borrow an Xbox controller for the day is the most interesting post on mine.

I feel robbed.

Marriedtothesilverfox · 15/08/2021 15:40

Some people are so entitled. Want a lift from Heathrow, pay or use public transport.
Want to spend £££ on child’s birthday and cant afford it, have a smaller/cheaper affair.
Missing shoe artGrin

Its the fb requesting asking for free stuff or very cheapHmm especially is say its a washing machine, they specify colour. CFs

This is a few years old now but The Bang. There was a bang, a loud bang I admit, and the local pages went mad with ‘what was the bang’ ‘oh my god’, ‘thoughts and prayers’ etc. Then the local papers picked up on it and started posting on their Facebook pages asking if anyone knew what it was.

We never did find out.

Mine's got

A dog that ate a frog

A sick hedgehog

Someone cross that people are feeding birds and he now has seagulls (this was the man who posted in a lot of detail about his IBS and how to make soup, so he varies his content)

Empty nitrous oxide canisters found and the threat to youth!

Mysterious light in the sky

An abandoned car

And someone had some nice cake!

TSSDNCOP · 15/08/2021 20:38

I signed up yesterday and got a text today from Apple saying someone's using my id, never had that before and it's probs a scammer but I've deleted the app now.

LockdownCheeseToastie · 15/08/2021 20:45

Social housing swaps. “I have a small three bed in dodgytown and want to swap for a 4/5 bed in nicetown”. And they wonder why people aren’t flocking.

Eastie77Returns · 05/09/2021 12:59

Had to update with the latest on my neighbourhood page. A post from someone warning residents about thugs who are throwing eggs at people in the locality. The victim and his GF were egged earlier in the week and he has decided to post a picture ‘recreating the crime’ so people can see how he has been impacted. He has therefore cracked an egg on his leg and taken a picture of itConfused

Needless to say the responses under his picture are comedy goldGrin
