Brazen and Strange requests on NextDoor

Eastie77Returns · 14/08/2021 17:52

I don’t know if it’s just a reflection of the people who live in my area or if Nextdoor just attracts strange people in general but some of the posts on my neighbourhood page are a just a mix of brazen entitlement and weirdnessGrin

Today a man has posted a long message explaining he desperately needs someone with a car to pick up his relative from Heathrow. He is not willing to pay but has offered to buy the driver a Costa coffee by way of compensation. For context, it would be a 40 mile round trip. Residents have responded asking why he cannot meet his relative himself or take the Heathrow Express/tube if he doesn’t have a car. He has replied that he doesn’t want to travel on public transport, his relative cannot take the Express as the ticket is “not in her budget”. When a (male) respondent offered to help the poster replied no thanks, the driver must be a womanHmm

Another woman has written an abusive message criticising people who offered to help fund her 5 year old’s birthday party and then backed out. She posted a week ago stating she needed several hundreds of pounds to buy a bike and organise a party. Apparently someone sent her a PM offering to meet her outside Morrison’s to buy her a birthday cake and didn’t show up. Another offered to transfer her money and didn’t. A third person offered something else and didn’t follow through and so it went on. Obviously sad if true but…who goes onto a public site and makes these kinds of requestsShock

Last week someone drew an intricate picture of a missing shoe. They lost it in a park whilst sunbathing(!) and said they were willing to pay compensation as the shoe had sentimental value (why they didn’t just post a picture of the surviving shoe is anyone’s guess).

I admit I just go on ND for the LOLs now!

dammit....i just tried to join but they want to verify my address or send a postcard and it's for the house we are moving to next month!

I will have to do a drive by!

And hope nothing weird is on there until I can verify!

Starlitexpress · 14/08/2021 20:59

Ours is, in order, missing cats, flooding, cats in general, suspicious characters, found cats......usually someone saying they have "found" a cat in their garden and they think it is a stray as it ate all the food they helpfully put down for it, obligatory picture of a barrel like cat the size of a Mini Cooper wearing a red collar.
Just had a quick look and tonight's offering is recycling centre closed, dog sitter wanted and someone wanting to adopt a cat!

SuzyDaarling · 14/08/2021 21:02

There’s a post on ours tonight from a recycling adviser from the council saying that from 16 Aug you will be able to take stuff to the tip Mon - Fri again without having to book. One delightful guy has come back saying don’t they realise most people work 5 days a week and unless they provide a 7 day service he will carry on dumping stuff in fields. Twat!

SpindleWhorl · 14/08/2021 21:04

There is much frothing about e-scooters.

recreationalcalpol · 14/08/2021 21:09

Oh, I forgot about the absolute fury that rained down on the poor kid from St Paul’s Girl’s School who had achieved fantastic GCSEs and was offering tuition for the entrance exam. She was told that she couldn’t post unless she created a business account, that she should have known that with her expensive education, and promptly deleted Hmm. Twats.

Waferbiscuit · 14/08/2021 21:12

I too feel worried about my neighbours. There are a lot of crazy requests - my favourite was the person asking for someone to help move their piano... down the road!

Next Door users seem incapable of learning from other's posts. Almost every morning over the summer you get someone posting 'oh, what was that animal noise last night, like a crying sound'. Everyone pipes in and says 'definitely a fox' with links to fox videos on YouTube..... Then the next morning exact same thing happens again!

Lots of insanity about LTNs too. People get really really cross when their journey takes 2 minutes longer than it used to!

RainingYetAgain · 14/08/2021 21:19

Someone on mine made really nasty comments about the local surgery receptionists and nurses (the staff are lovely there btw). Went on for days. Then there was a post saying she was leaving the site as there were spies and warning everyone to be careful. Loads of people asking if she was safe. Now she's back, reading between the lines, someone from the doctors asked about her comment . I have muted her

WingBingo · 14/08/2021 21:24

@AGirlCalledJohnny that Twitter account is hilarious, thank you!

CremeEggThief · 14/08/2021 21:33

I find it really cheeky when people post on the Facebook group, asking for lifts from strangers and forget to include please and thank you in those requests.

The other thing that shocks me is the level of vitriol towards kids who are petty thieves/ involved in vandalism. Yes, they are annoying little fuckers who make us all angry, but isn't chopping their hands off or openly calling them "rats who should be exterminated" a little OTT?🤔

EadnothTheStaller · 14/08/2021 21:34

This has to be the thing the man two doors down was wittering on about and trying to persuade me I should join. He's a total busybody and, if that wasn't enough to persuade me against touching it with a bargepole, him telling me proudly how he posted on there warning people about the flying ants being out definitely decided the matter for me!

VetInAVat · 14/08/2021 21:47

What's an LTN?
Ours has mostly been about how shit Milk&More have become recently. And "where have all the birds gone" coupled with "all these bloody birds are driving us mad"! It's hilarious!

Stardust98 · 14/08/2021 22:42

Ours is full of the usual - missing cats, fireworks and Nigel Mansell racing around at 3am. That is until last week, when someone posted asking if anyone would be interested in the making of adult videos HmmEnvy Grim...

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 14/08/2021 22:55

@TSSDNCOP If it turned out to be a grass snake, we may be neighbours.

NowWeAreSuckingDieselFella · 14/08/2021 23:11

@AGirlCalledJohnny that Twitter is epic. I wish I could bookmark it so I know how far down I've read Grin

We've got a lot of 'Milk & More' chatter, too! It must be a nationwide problem as there's nothing about birds on our Nextdoor, as a rule.
Bakewellisntjustacake · 14/08/2021 23:17

Someone on ours has managed to essentially 'reply all' on his request so everyone who is on that neighbourhood has had an email saying xxx has responded to your question but no one asked a question but him so now all the comments are 'I haven't asked a question'

EBearhug · 14/08/2021 23:24

Local Traffic News, I assume.

I joined through a thing which shields your real email. So I get the highlights mailed to me, but I can't actually log on, because I don't know my account name. On balance, this is a good thing, because it means I can't respond to the mad people. (Although also I can't respond to the few sane queries either.)

Cocolapew · 14/08/2021 23:27

instagram.com/bestofnextdoor_?utm_medium=copy_link the best of next door is on Instagram too if you don't have Twitter
That bee one was excellent 😅

SuperbOwls · 14/08/2021 23:35

Nextdoor is wild. Someone was tricked into buying a wild rat for 20 quid on mine

Bakewellisntjustacake · 14/08/2021 23:40

@SuperbOwls haha!! That's amazing!

Noooo Shock

Outing yourself as a fly-tipper is extremely dumb!

NoSquirrels · 14/08/2021 23:48

@blissfulllife

Someone's found a racist pigeon on mine

Oh dear that's horrible
SW1amp · 14/08/2021 23:51

@Eastie77Returns

Was the missing shoe a clog..?

If so, you live near my friend who sent me a screenshot of the post. Absolutely bonkers!

Ours is lost cats, cleaners wanted and a bloke called Alan who is OBSESSED with a road that he thinks needs a speed camera
So we get a daily update of how many vehicles he has seen driving a bit too fast.
He also doesn’t like the pigeon poo on the pavement underneath a railway bridge and has spent 4 years incensed by Network Rail’s reluctance to put up pigeon spikes

Oh well done. Technologically versed like me then.
