Sandwiches and wraps

I’ve got a bring and share lunch coming up and I’ve been allocated sandwiches. I’m thinking of doing a platter of sandwiches and a platter of wraps. I’m thinking a meat, veg and fish option for each.
No allergies, couple of veggies (but one won’t eat sandwiches as no carbs) but no vegans.
The plan so far;
Sandwiches
Egg Salad
Roast beef with horseradish mayo and rocket
Tuna crunch (tuna with sweetcorn, peppers, red onion)

Wraps
Hummus with roasted red peppers and pickled carrot ribbons
Chicken tikka with spinach, mango chutney and mint and cucumber yoghurt dressing)
Prawns with fajita spices with shredded lettuce guacamole and salsa

Opinions please! I’m not into boring sandwiches but hoped to do a selection most people would find something they like in.

I think you've got the short straw there with being allocated sandwiches, as that is probably the major part of a lunch in effort and cost. Although I suppose it depends how many you are catering for. Do you have to pay for all the 'components' too?

I'd try and get out of that and offer to bring the paper napkins instead...

... and maybe some party hats too!

PurpleDaisies · 11/08/2021 15:47

I think most people actually like more traditional sandwiches/wraps.

Your veggies will be screwed if you do equal proportions of the filings you’ve listed. Meat eaters will also eat the egg sarnies and houmous wraps.

I’d definitely add cheese sarnies/wraps, possibly in place of the fish options. I don’t like the sound of the prawn wrap.

So many "just make it plainer" answers- why not just have some bread with a bit of marg on the side for the adventurous ones?

Here I was thinking these all sounded nice but dead boring. Just in case someone is vegan - get some onion bhajis from the deli section and do those in a wrap with mango chutney and crispy salad.

They sound amazing! I would love every single one. Hate boring sandwiches. Also love pp's idea of the onion bhaji and chutney wrap. I'd definitely suggest a plainer one though as there's always a few traditional people.

Ninjawannabee · 11/08/2021 15:56

Not what you asked but depending how many people are attending, you might be providing the majority of the lunch with your proposal above.

If there are 3 of you then crack on.

If there are 10 of you then pare it back or you're basically doing ten times as much effort / cost as everyone else, or otherwise you will have waaaayy too much food!

Lunch should be 2 or 3 sandwich quarters, a mini sausage / roll, a spoonful of houmous and a little cake / fruit.

If you have one of these areas each then someone else is buying 2 tubs of houmous compared to your gourmet sandwich spread, someone else a 24 pack of cocktail sausages.

I’ve done something similar before. I made (but could have bought) focaccia with a few different toppings. It went down a storm. There was a separate platter of meats/cheeses.

Speak for yourself, mate, that's what I snack on while I'm waiting for the actual lunch 😹

Alternista · 11/08/2021 16:00

Oh god they all sound amazing.

I’d ditch the prawns in favour of onion bhaji and chutney wraps- less smelly and I’d worry about poisoning people if the prawns sat out.

I’d possibly also swap the egg for a simpler cheese type sandwich, unless you’re in a week ventilated room!

Ivy48 · 11/08/2021 16:00

Why’s everything so bloody fancy these days? Why can’t you just do a plain option? I wouldn’t eat any of those. I like the meats individually but the adding of horseradish/pepper/onion etc would totally put me off. Can you not make them plan with a pot of dip/veggies as optiionals?

PatriciaHolm · 11/08/2021 16:03

*Lunch should be 2 or 3 sandwich quarters, a mini sausage / roll, a spoonful of houmous and a little cake / fruit."

I assuming OP was feeding grown adults, not pre-schoolers!

HarrietSchulenberg · 11/08/2021 16:03

As someone else said above, just buy a pre-made platter. That's far too much work for one lunch and no-one's going to marvel at the sandwiches when someone else rocks up with pies and quiches and someone else brings cakes.

LemonRoses · 11/08/2021 16:07

OK but if wraps have too many dry bits, they disintegrate. Tuna is too smelly - especially with onion. Egg can be smelly if not a good egg mayo.

I’d think perhaps sandwiches-

Ham and mustard or salad
Cheese and celery
Prawn Marie Rose
Egg mayo and watercress

Wraps is a nice lighter option but maybe
Cheese and coleslaw
Falafel and sweet chilli
Coronation chicken.

Truth is, you’re not going to please everyone, these things are always over catered and there will be plenty of choice anyone doesn’t like what you offer.

Snoken · 11/08/2021 16:13

Another option could be those thin bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon. Also, I love Pret's posh cheddar baguettes, that would be another good veggie option: www.pret.co.uk/en-GB/products/UK001921/posh-cheddar-and-pickle.

godmum56 · 11/08/2021 16:14

sounds totally delicious...where and when? :)

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 11/08/2021 16:24

Maybe do mini rolls or finger rolls instead of the wraps? I would eat all of those, sounds lush!

AtleastitsnotMonday · 11/08/2021 16:50

@Galassia

Only one veggie option, can you do another?
There are 2 veggie option, egg or hummus

PeonyRose80 · 11/08/2021 17:06

I love them all! Really good mix, maybe a cheese, mayo and tomato?

AtleastitsnotMonday · 11/08/2021 17:07

Thank you all for the feed back. I’ll scrap the egg for cheese is pickle to fancy? And make tuna just tuna cucumber. Take prawns wraps off in exchange for ham salad.
Maybe My original suggestions were a bit complicated, I know they are are group who like their food and I personally hate boring sandwiches so I think that influenced me! May through in a French stick with butter for those preferring the simple things.
Those concerned about workload or cost, I’m not bothered my either so that not really an issue. Lots of others making contributions too and knowing this group, will probably be homemade with organic ingredients, picked from their kitchen gardens!

Cheese and pickle is good.

I’m still concerned for your veggies. Maybe I’ve been burnt at too many buffet lunches before.

Make sure you do more of the non meat ones.

BastardMonkfish · 11/08/2021 17:18

I really want an onion bhaji and chutney wrap now!! What a great idea!

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 11/08/2021 17:21

As lovely as it all sounds, I probably wouldn't eat any of it..I'd go with a simpler option as well

NotWanting · 11/08/2021 17:32

OP your original menu sounded super. It's a lunch not a 5* restaurant. There will be other things to eat also. Its not there only meal of the day and they won't starve if they don't like pickled carrot.
You know these people best.

Kite22 · 11/08/2021 18:21

It's about knowing your audience.

I think there are quite a lot of people that would prefer 'just ham' or 'just cheese' and don't like pickles or mayo or whatever, but you know who you are catering for, and also -as pps have said - it depends how many. If you are doing 'a plate / tray' of sandwiches, it would be a faff to go for so many different options, but if you are feeding the 5000 then scale makes it more feasible.

Martianworld · 11/08/2021 18:27

@AtleastitsnotMonday

You sound absolutely fab and you know who you're catering for so you do what you think best. Remember on here for everyone who hates one thing, another would love it. Your friends are very lucky. 😋

MyAnacondaMight · 11/08/2021 18:27

If other people are doing savoury foods too, I’d just make what you like - let someone else cater for the fussy people.

I’d vary the breads a bit too. Something like:

  • Chicken mayo with crispy bacon on baguette (universally popular)
  • Avocado, roasted peppers, rocket and olive tapenade on focaccia
  • Onion bhaji, spinach and pickled carrot wrap
  • Smoked salmon, cream cheese and dill on rye (could be an open sandwich).

You could make your own focaccia, mayonnaise, bhaji, or cure your own gravadlax for extra points.
