A Thing You Don't See These Days

I found a picture of my mum standing on one of those big red coin operated weighing scales today. It had a big dial face. It was in our local shopping centre but I remember seeing them on piers, train stations etc too. Did you ever use them? Other than this picture of my mum I don't remember seeing one in use

@flinginflangin

Those beaded seat covers on car seats. We had them but I never knew what they were for.
Supposed to keep you cool I think, by raising your body away from the upholstery.

The windscreen strips with the driver and passenger names on.

Not RTFT but "jokey" car stickers with slogans on like "save gas, fart in a jar", usually accompanied by a Garfield stuck to one of the windows with suction pads and a bloody rubber hand on the boot.

Public safety information films.
Stuff of nightmares some of them.
Charlie says........

OhGiveUp · 19/08/2021 13:51

Coloured tissues. They were like a rainbow in a box.

Physical alarm clocks.

People driving old bangers. Growing up you knew who had money and who didn't from their cars.

@MrsSchadenfreude

Oh yes the woman in the Ladies in John Lewis in Reading used to go in after each person and wipe the seat with the same cloth!

The Bon Accord van coming down the street to take away your soft drink bottles, and replace with refilled ones...

Having to put a white arrow in the window to attract the attention of the delivery guy

PeskyRooks · 19/08/2021 20:45

Bar towels! Some people used to sew them onto their jeans too. Very punky!

Tv shops, with all the TVs in a row showing the same channel

Bath pearls

Those little loops of fake hair showing the different colours in the hair dye section of shops

Box of Omo in the kitchen window! Some people will get it 😂. Sounded like a good idea to me 😉.

Global hypercolour were the colour change tee shirts.
I loved mine!
Put it in the wash with some undies while in holiday once. I had colour changing socks and bra !
Many of the things listed are still around
My dd is the grubby kid, playing out in old clothes. Usually grey joggers with no knees.
Rag and bone man around here, but in his ford transit.
Several milk delivery companies.
Dd had reins. She is only 8. But she spent 50% of her time running off and the other 50% falling over...
I remember my little sister had a bright orange waterproof "cover" for her buggy.
Like a cape/poncho. With a hood.
Before all the PVC tent-like covers that stayed away from the child
Also, foot muffs on the buggy. They had a space for each leg and the crotch strap held them in place.
Modern ones are a single "pocket" that seat belt goes through.
Yes to blankets on beds. I still use blankets now.
Power cuts. I remember have loads of power cuts.
I dont think dd has ever seen one.

Clackers. Not sure if that's the official name?
2 hard plastic balls on a length of string.
Waved up and down at the right speed to bang together and make a racket. Caused a load of bruising up your arm when they missed.
Dd has a collection of "old" toys.
She has the lolo ball (football with disc around for bouncing), rubik's cube, big metal slinky spring.

Phone boxes
Whereabouts are you? There are plenty near us, many of them the old red ones due to conservation areas, etc. Granted, most don't actually have a working payphone in them - lots have defibrillators and there's a mini library and an art installation.

Tardis teapots. Those silver pots of tea at service stations that put more tea in the saucer than the cup. Bloody expensive too.

isseys4xmastinselcats · 21/08/2021 17:21

people sitting in a pub actually talking to each other nowadays a group of people at the same table will all be looking at their mobile phones and occasionally looking up

StarlightLady · 21/08/2021 17:50

@lollipoprainbow - ‘surprised you are not still waiting to be served 😂.

Magic eye in the newspaper. I was never very good. My sister got a whole book of magic eyes for Christmas once.

Encyclopedias for doing homework.

Listening to the top 20 on a Sunday night, and Top of the Pops on a Friday(?) night.

Kittens and puppies being sold in pet shops...
