A Thing You Don't See These Days

I found a picture of my mum standing on one of those big red coin operated weighing scales today. It had a big dial face. It was in our local shopping centre but I remember seeing them on piers, train stations etc too. Did you ever use them? Other than this picture of my mum I don't remember seeing one in use

My sister worked in our local Happy Eater for a while! We used to go down there for Sunday dinner.

Good times!

Happy Shopper Blush schoolchildren used to use the phrase as an insult for any non brand item of anything.

Drinking fountains in public places. I remember them on the cliff top in Southbourne in the 1970s.

Grubby children playing outside in not new clothes.

You say that @WildRosie but water bottle refill stations are the current version in the UK.

Agreed. A 21st century equivalent.

Avocado coloured bathrooms
You read my mind. I was just about to come back and mention coloured bathroom suites. Some colours such as maroon, dark brown and navy blue were truly dismal but avocado wasn't quite as bad. Does anyone still have a black toilet seat ??

Speaking clock and Dial a Disc. You dialled a premium rate phone number from a pay phone, or if you were foolhardy or from a wealthy family, from the family landline, and were told the time, or you requested a Top 40 single and a tinny version came down the line. You could ring up for a weather forecast too, I think.
When I was a child all those things were free. At least dial a disc was until I think 6pm. Luckily premium rate numbers didn't exist but we were only allowed to ring dial a disc pre 6pm on pain of death if the phone bill was too high Grin

One no one else remembers is the Sparkes family reading books.

I miss the old Tizer taste.

My gran used to get thin sliced bread. Plus returning the glass bottles to the shop for money.

Center Parcs in Penrith has loads of red phone boxes.

We also did Christian Aid walks - a sponsored 5 or 10 mile walk.

I remember (just) Spangles, Hellas Bars and Logger bars, Treats, and Pacers - the last was a minty chew with three green stripes.

Plus the first and second class post being delivered.

My gran used to talk about paying her rates to the council.

Queuing up in the post office for TV and Electric stamps.

My Granny's wall mounted tea leaf dispenser, crocheted toilet roll cover with little lady figurine, Izal loo roll and coal tar soap.

Avocado coloured bathrooms
We were given a free avocado bath, sink and toilet in 1991 ( my dad's friend owned a kitchen and bathroom showroom) because they were excess shop and nobody was buying. We were very broke so most grateful!

Here we are, longwayoff, though it's from the Lakes, not North Wales:

In the Highlands and Scottish West Coast, local papers still have (or had until Lockdown) 'spot the shinty ball' competitions, for example:

My granddad would encourage my grandma to go on it and press his foot down from behind.

Hemingwaycat · 19/08/2021 08:45

I saw white dog poo the other day, my DC asked why it was white.

I remember my Nan sending my Dad to the shop for toilet roll and he came back with peach coloured loo roll. She went absolutely mental at him and demanded he took it back, she couldn’t fathom why he’d think it was acceptable to buy any colour other than white. He was arguing back ‘but it’s just toilet roll, who cares what colour it is?!’. She was completely shocked and appalled she’d raised someone who thought coloured toilet paper was acceptable, I couldn’t stop laughing.

Bit late to the party here but I remember these were in the toilets in the market where I'm from and it was the highlight of my week going in there and using the mm

Was going to say newspapers and magazines (at least in our house) and walking to the shop to get one in the morning.

We always had a daily newspaper. Used to look forward the News of the World on Sundays Shockwith its free magazine. My mum used to buy a Woman’s Own every week and I used to love Take a Break Blush.

Haven’t bought one for years!

Those beaded seat covers on car seats. We had them but I never knew what they were for.
