What free gifts with magazines do you remember fondly?

I loved the gifts that came with magazines. Some were of course crap, like no name mascaras and nail sets that had the magazine branding on them, utter rubbish.

Others were brilliant, I remember fondly:

Lipstick case with sugar magazine

A clear plastic tote with Elle, which I still miss

A small denim bag, again, Elle, which i still have

Various clutch bags with glamour magazine

Roomy beach bags with Red magazine

T shirts with Instyle magazine

Silk scarves, High st mascaras, bikinis

I really miss those little freebies. It's better for the environment that they don't do those any more of course.

Also, I really miss magazines from the late 90s, which is when I started reading them, they were great and many are defunct now.

I loved Elle magazine, 90s era
Real magazine
Company
More
Look
Glamour.

What magazines or magazine freebies do you remember?

Free CDs with Q magazine in the 90's were great, always had emerging artists/little known talent before they went on to become famous

Whatwouldnanado · 05/08/2021 23:12

A banana yellow plastic comb which I kept for ages from Jackie magazine.

AdaThorne · 05/08/2021 23:17

An erotica book with New Woman magazine when I was 17 that made me much more open minded than I’d ever been.
And 7 inch singles stuck to the front of Smash Hits that looked so flimsy it was always a miracle they played.

I had a comb from an early issue of Mizz magazine, which lasted 20+ years!

I remember head-pinching sunglasses, beach mats and flip-flops that never fitted. Lipstick in unflattering colours and lots of makeup bags.

Yes! I remember buying one as a teenager with an erotic novel, and I can still remember one particular naughty scene very well Blush

Flexidisks and the ladybird themed things (a ring, a pin) that came with Twinkle magazine when I was a very little girl.

Ieatmarmite · 05/08/2021 23:24

A red plastic spatula which was a free gift with Women's Weekly about 30 years ago. It still gets used about once a week.

tutorwho · 05/08/2021 23:25

I still have the Buffy books that came with the magazines.. I loved reading them.

Bearyhumcrack · 05/08/2021 23:25

I remember a balloon stapled to something like the beano.

Stapled.

Tiramiwho · 05/08/2021 23:27

Going way back to the late 1970's/early '80's now. A Ghostly comic for girls called 'Misty.'
It had great artwork on the cover and throughout and gave free gifts like 'scarab ring', 'Sphinx pendants' and magic 'Scrying mirror' I loved it and saved it for nightime reading by torchlight under the covers! Smile

Lyricallie · 05/08/2021 23:27

Oh I remember the Sabrina the teenage witch magazine and it came with a purple sparkily make up box. Then you had to collect all the make up!

Duetorain · 05/08/2021 23:31

Spatulas from the Good Food magazine

queenjaneappro · 05/08/2021 23:33

A blue wide tooth comb from Just 17 that I still use. Must be over 25 years old!

MiloAndEddie · 05/08/2021 23:39

I had a tiny black underarm bag that I used for years when I went out, it was the perfect size for purse/gigantic phone/house keys. I think it was from just 17.

I also used to love company magazine and look magazine. I used to buy both religiously

A ring that came with the 2nd or 3rd issue of Princess, a tween mag that was brought out to cash in on Diana-mania in 1981 and which I got until it (inevitably) merged with Girl a dozen or so issues later.

I found it in my old jewellery box a couple of years ago.

I loved "Discovery" about history. There was always something to build from history with it. The first magazine had a cassette of an adventure with time travelling children, siblings. Still have the cassette. A lot of the very new and exciting tech in it isn't anymore but aside from that it's still good.

My parents hated I didn't buy more "normal" magazines!

Later, Classicfm magazine with free CDs; still buy BBC music for CDs.

MercyBooth · 05/08/2021 23:41

@AdaThorne Was it a Black Lace one called The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by any chance? I remember getting this free with New Woman back in the 90s. Started buying NW regularly in the early 2000s. NW used to do free gifts every month. Books CDs make up bags. Loved them all.
Free full size No 7 gifts from Eve magazine. Free umbrellas a couple of times also from Eve. Free scarves from Eve.
Scarlet magazine (erotic mag for women) gave away free BL books a couple of times too.

prettygirlincrimsonrose · 05/08/2021 23:41

I always kept an eye out for free books, as I thought that generally seemed good value! I discovered Marian Keyes via a free copy of Angels. And I remember one by Davina McCall about sex and relationships that came with, I think, 19 that I reread a few times (slightly obsessed in my mid teens Blush)

More innocently, I remember fortune telling dice from J17. And yes to the useful bags.

I remember Misty! Much cooler than soppy old Princess 😆, but I think probably also inevitably merged with Girl - they all seemed to in the end.
MercyBooth · 05/08/2021 23:43

I was a bit too young for the Misty comic but i got a 1984 Misty annual at Christmas 1983

Becca19962014 · 05/08/2021 23:44

I'd buy "woman and home" every April as it came with a free book that I'd take on holiday in May that year when in work in early 2000s, and any others too. Some were really good.

Discovery would occasionally have free books too.

I bought a magazine that came with a free bag I used at work for over a year, no one ever believed it was free with a magazine, it would have come with a book too!

MercyBooth · 05/08/2021 23:44

Comics i bought were Mandy Tracy and Nikki Occasionally Bunty.

Longdistance · 05/08/2021 23:45

Mizz magazine had a kohl pencil attached one time. I had that for years.
Elle and Glamour magazine had a few nice things.
I remember when magazines had samples if the latest fragrance. Not so much these days.

MercyBooth · 05/08/2021 23:46

Red had some decent free bags back in the 2000s 2010s too.

SallyCinnamon3009 · 05/08/2021 23:50

Shout magazine when they did the free book of ghost stories from "readers" loved them and read them over and over. Still remember the stories, one about a girl who bought her baby sister a possessed clown doll on a trip to Spain, and two sisters who went on holiday to a haunted lighthouse
