We're on a rare trip away, been looking forward to it for ages especially about having some lovely food.

Now I discover tonight's veggie option is mushroom risotto. Mushroom. Fucking. Risotto.

What's the meal that makes your heart sink?

Mmmmm. Reminds me of a veggie burger I got in Paris. ‘How do you want it cooked?’ Oh medium please...

It was a slice of (raw) avocado in a bun with a green salad (ie lettuce) - with lardons on the bottom of the bowl... we were laughing so hard the staff came out from the back to gawp at us.

I ordered the “vegetable soup” in a cafe in the Scottish Borders. Jedburgh or Hawick, forget which. There was a lamb shank I it! I pointed this out. The cafe man said “sheep eat vegetable”. End of discussion. I wad very young, very southern, very intimidated and very hungry!

My vegetarian salad in Paris in the 80s was decorated with dozens of baby octopi.

Crayfishforyou · 04/08/2021 14:10

I was served a plate of tinned vegetables in Amsterdam.
They weren’t even hot.

Ooh that makes my experience in Amsterdam positively gourmet!

In a hotel, half board, for a week.

Every night the meat eaters would have something different. Every night the vegetarians got the same fake meat item, alongside whatever veg they were doing for the others.

I went out for a meal with Dh, we are visiting rural france. Pleasantly surprised to get an amazing veg meal. Fully equivalent of the meat counterpart with lots of textures and sides. Hang in there, the revolution is happening! 😃

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 04/08/2021 14:19

I once had 2 pieces of broccoli and 1/2 tomato as a veggie main in Switzerland in late 80’s Confused

Leontine · 04/08/2021 20:40

My heart sinks when the vegetarian options are replaced by vegan ones. Sad

KittenKong · 04/08/2021 20:43

Me too! I like cheese! I like butter! I like eggs!

I have found that there are fewer non meat options now - the attitude it to just lump one vegan option for all the non meat eaters and jobs done. The proportion of meat / non meat options is definitely getting worse.

Ddot · 04/08/2021 20:54

Mushroom strogonoff and salad, the salad was moving (crawling with greenfly so strictly speaking not meat free. The strogonoff was inedible, tasted of vinegar, pure vinegar. Oh the joy of eating out

Leontine · 04/08/2021 21:12

I know - give me my cheese dammit!!

I’ve found that there are more meat free options but they’re usually all vegan. Sad

Leontine · 04/08/2021 21:13

Like I’ve noticed there are more place last with specific menus for vegans, but no vegetarian options. Sad

Teawaster · 04/08/2021 21:57

I had a mushroom risotto in a posh restaurant in Rome a number of years ago. We decided to treat ourselves one evening. I was sick after it , it was so heavy and stodgy .Never had it again

Roarsomemore · 04/08/2021 22:42

I agree about needing vegan AND veggie options. I'm veggie because I don't like meat so I don't want any plant based meat substitutes or pulled pork jackfruit.

My spirit drops at veggie lasagne and mushroom risotto too

Muddydoor · 04/08/2021 22:45

Macaroni cheese. I quite like it on occasion, but when you have a four page menu and the only vegetarian option is macaroni cheese it can be quite upsetting.

EastWestWhosBest · 04/08/2021 23:03

See a vegi lasagne used to be the standard and I was bored of it, but now I’d quite like a good pub lasagne with chips.

In contradiction to this thread, been out for lunch today. Look!

Mushroom. Fucking. Risotto.
Mushroom. Fucking. Risotto.
Mushroom. Fucking. Risotto.
KittenKong · 05/08/2021 19:35

What’s all that then? Was is nice?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/08/2021 19:42

Amazing!

Starter of crispy fried cauliflower with kimchi and other bits and pieces.

Main was a soufflé

Churros with boozy cherries for pud

Ddot · 05/08/2021 19:55

I'm hungry now and I never get hungry

Ddot · 05/08/2021 19:59

I bought a vegan pie from famous health shop, it was dia. I cut into the lovely looking pastry to be confronted by half a centimetre of peppery brown goo. It was bloody £5 too

🤬😱🤮

DuesToTheDirt · 05/08/2021 20:05

One of my worst has to be a work Xmas lunch years ago. All our choices were ordered in advance, as is usual at Xmas. When we got there they weren't ready for us and we had to hang around the streets for an hour. Then when we went in, they had run out of my preordered veggie dish and I was given a stirfry instead. Hmm

A few people have mentioned having the same ingredients in all courses. On a BA longhaul flight a couple of years ago, the veggie lunch option was pasta. At dinner, the veggie option was pasta, with a different sauce - and a side dish of, you guessed it, pasta salad Confused. Wouldn't take a genius to plan a better menu than that.

Greenlittle · 05/08/2021 20:08

Oh Remus, that looks good!

Yup, the pasta with pasta salad, been there Dues. Also had rice with boiled/sautéed potatoes. Don’t think I’ve been served pasta and rice together yet? Awaiting that delicacy. Although that being said I have had a fairly stodgy Egyptian dish which had noodles and rice mixed with chickpeas I think and some other stuff. Heavy!!

You need the pie minister Kevin. They’re fab.
Ddot · 05/08/2021 21:05

Oh I look for that ta, I make a mean vegetable pie. Mix the veg with whatever flavour you like then top with strong cheese and shop bought puff pastry, not hard so why cant pubs, restaurants and shops bloody make one
