Anyone know Oxford well?

DD is applying to Oxford. We have the opportunity to spend a day in the city next month and I'd like her to get a sense of her bearings a bit, especially as she hasn't made a firm decision as to which college she will apply. She is on a university access programme through her sixth form and they were supposed to have a week in Oxford this summer but it all moved online because of the current circumstances.

If you know the city well, can you give me some suggestions for an itinerary? We can arrive early and stay late. I know it's not usually possible to visit colleges but other suggestions of places to see / routes to take would be welcome.

Thank you for your advice.

I think rule no.1 is to discount people’s 30-year-old opinions. Oxbridge is not stuffed with posh thickos a la Brideshead Revisited.

Another rule is to remember that they cannot take everyone who applies, or even gets to interview, so set aside “chips on shoulder” attitudes and determine that all you can do is put yourself in the most advantageous position (grades/subject knowledge) and then give it your best shot.

As far as colleges are concerned, pick one you like but be prepared to end up elsewhere. There are a few stand-out ones that everyone likes - eg Worcester - so masses of applicants are redistributed to other colleges before interview. After interview, anything can happen!
